Hi to all eds and posters . am long time reader of this site and want to thank all the Ed's for the incredible job.
I have been wondering about the current situation of Carrick and the best replacement.

{Ed004's Note - Ideal replacement would be Weigl however I think that would be very unlikely}

Agree0 Disagree1

Already at the club in my opinion, not going to be as good on the ball as carrick but most posters want a midfileder to complement pogba in the kante mould.

Give fosu mensah a full season and hell do enough to convince that he can be that player. Energetic, tackles cleanly, intercepts well and is definitely strong enough to hold his own.

Also herrera and pogba for me works in most games, its only in the big games where they can get overrun and you probably would need an extra midfielder to support them.

I don't think TFM is ready to play every week for us. We need to pick and choose the games he plays atm. There is every chance we could be in the the UCL next season, would you be happy with him being first choice in a semi final against a Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

A bad performance against a team like that could set him back quite a bit.

09 Feb 2017 09:25:37
Well if he's good enough to get us to the semi final then i'd be happy for him to play in it.

As i said before he has the required physical and technical attributes to play in midfield for us. The only question marks are mentally and the only way to find out about that is to give him oppurtunities.

09 Feb 2017 09:56:43
There is a big difference to giving him oppurtunities and relying on him.

I don't like or agree with the common phrase that "if they're good enough they're old enough".

Its just not true, having talent doesn't make you physically, mentally or emotional mature enough to deal with the pressures.

If your son is a child prodigy and has the intelligence to pass his GCSE's at the age of 8 or 9 does that make him socially or emotionally mature enough to be put into a class with 15/ 16 year old kids? Of course not.

Just because a player has the natural ability and even the physical development to deal with top flight football that doesn't mean they are emotionally or mentally mature enough to deal with the abuse off of millions of people if they make a mistake. To take the pressure that comes with professional football at a top flight level where every performance is dissected by the media and fans and displayed in papers on tv and on social media.

The lad isn't even 19 yet, do you think you could deal with some of the abuse you've seen handed out to footballers when you were 18?

I don't know about you but when I was 18 I stuggled to deal with the normal pressures of growing up.

{Ed001's Note - I understand what you are saying Shappy, but sometimes the way to grow up and gain that maturity is to face life head on. When you are shielded, it is as likely, in most cases more likely, to hinder your ability to cope with the inevitable abuse later.}

I completely get that Ed001. My concern is that if we go into next season letting players like Carrick and Schweinsteiger leave and doesn't replace them with the intention of throwing TFM in then we could be leaving ourselves open to problems further down the line.

I wouldn't want a situation where maybe he's had a couple of bad performances and the media have got on his back and ideally he needs taking out of the firing line but due to not having enough players in his positon he is forced to play and has another bad performance and the whole situation could have a very negative effect on him and his development.

Like when DDG first came to United, when the press really started to get on his back Sir Alex pulled him out of the spotlight for a few games and gave Lindegaard a run of games.

I have great faith in TFM and think he can go on to be a great player for us, but I don't think throwing youngster in with no real cover to be able to take him out the firing line as and when he needs it could be more disruptive and benefical to his career.

Actually Shappy TFM turned 19 last month. Gabriel Jesus seems to have slotted in City's team flawlessly. I am sure if AC Milan were in a semi final with madrid they will still have Gianluigi Donnarumma as their keeper and he is only 17. Same way they have kept faith with Locatelli. Other examples are Celtic's Dembelle and Leverkusen's Tah.
I do however understand what you are trying to put across, we shouldn't just throw him into the deep end and see if he can swim but rather nurture him the way bayern munich is handling Renato Sanchez and not thew ay we handled Depay.
So it can go either way.
Could be this is one of the reasons why coaches make good money, because they are expected to make the right calls.

09 Feb 2017 11:49:00
I agree with Shappt that we need to look after and nurture him. However, right now he isn't getting a look in which is frustrating. He looks like a great prospect, let's give him some games and see what he is made of.

09 Feb 2017 11:49:46
TFM as first choice is a risk as nobody knows how he will handle it.

All signs point to him becoming an immense player but its a risk to find out if he will sink or swim by making him first choice for us. Integration in to the first team IMO is the best way.

09 Feb 2017 12:02:50
Give carrick a one year extension and blood tfm in next season. Let bastian go which would make the most sense to me.

09 Feb 2017 12:30:25
Mbd, obviously there are many examples of players who have handled the pressure at a young age. You hear people say about them having a mature head on young shoulders.

But there are just as many if not more of youngsters who had too much too soon and couldn't handle it and never reached their potential in part at least because they were thrown in too quickly.

We need to have someone to share the burden with him, so we can bring him out the firing line if we need to.

Its a fine balance.

DSG, it looks like Carrick won't be given a new contract atm. Or at least that's the most recent rumour.

I wanna see him get more games, but because he is ready and not because we don't have anyone else.

09 Feb 2017 16:03:47
MBD agree with the exception of Depay. Depay was partly responsible as he simply didn't give it total commitment. The talent, although raw was there but along with attitude.
A classic example of a youngun with talent being a great footballer but losing it is Gasgoigne. It could be argued about Morrison also. there's a load to making it as a pro player, skill, luck, management both on and off the pitch but if you don't take a calculated risk you might never Know the true potential.

09 Feb 2017 16:40:51
Sometimes dropping a player in at the deep end either make or break them. In life you need to be pushed outside your comfort zone to see how you perform under pressure.
The manager also needs to know the player is ready, his training performances, sub appearances and the odd game here or there will help him make his mind up.
An injury to a player, your called up; you need to be ready to play.
At times you need to fail to learn to succeed. Mentality has a lot to do with it. Physiology reports play an important part.
He's key is a good example of how his condifidence affected his performances. He's miss a shot and would be distraught and doubt his own ability.
If your picked to play, take your chance, learn from your mistakes and accept them due to you inexperience playing at the top level.

10 Feb 2017 08:31:05
Mad hatter, but didn't TFM already get pushed in the deep end in the FA cup final, how did that work?

Obviously he wasn't ready and jose and his team see his development each and every day.

I'd agree with shappy on this one, slowly slowly and when he is ready more so mentally then he will be in!
