Anybody else eating humble pie with Rojo's performances of late or just me!

Got to say i've never really liked him or rated him until this season, but got to say his performances of late have been good.

Stan Collymore made a good point the other day about how great coaches/ managers make average players good and good players great. I think Mourinho has got that quality and we are certainly going in the right direction.

Keeping Jones fit by all accounts is no mean feat either!

Anyone else changed their mind a bit on Rojo or just me!

Agree7 Disagree1

Got to disagree with you there mate. Stan Collymore has never made a good point!

I have always admired Rojo. I like players who are willing to put their bodies on the line for the cause, and he always strikes me as that type of person/ player.

Rojo has had mixed career at UTD to say the least! He is now playing very well now in comparison to ealier in his UTD era.

IMO he is proving himself worthy of that role but he has not proven himself as yet.

If he is playing like this when we get to the end of the season then he has earned his place and rightfully so.

With his robust nature, aggression and enthusiasm, I always felt given run of games at center he will surly come good. only fear is his chellage to get him injured. I remmber him getting injured around city game and things started getting wrong for him.
Him and specially Jones are both surprising. Jones should stick to this trainingroster

Rojo actually had a decent spell at CB with LVG before he got injured. After that he was shunted out to LB and I don't think he is good there. He wanders too far upfield and gets caught out of place too often. Plus his crossing is pretty bad so his poor defending when at LB isn't made up for with good attacking output.

But as a CB and with less license to roam he does well. He loves a challenge and is happy to get stuck in, he is also pretty pacy so is able to cover for momentary lapse a little like how Rio used to (although he is nowhere near Rio's level) .

Personally I think he has done better than Jones and Smalling so far this season. Although the other two tend to get more plaudits in the british press because they are English.

I'd like to see a Bailly/ Rojo partnership for a few games before the end of the season. Could be very good.

I still don't see it, he's very poor in my eyes and shouldn't be anywhere near our club, let along the first XI.

19 Jan 2017 13:25:30
I agree with Shappy, he has looked very capable as CB, it's when he is left back that we see how poor with the ball he is and how his mind wanders. He is a 7/ 10 CB, but a 3/ 10 LB.

I'm please he is doing well, but which CB's don't do well? Playing against 1 up top and a holding midfielder means that Rojo, Blind, Smalling, Jones and Bailly all look perfectly capable in that role. Deep down we know most of them aren't world class, but fair play to them they all seem to do well when they play (so long as they have cover and up against 1 striker) .

A couple of year's ago Blackett was even looking good back there - no exposure means that most CB's would look good.

19 Jan 2017 13:52:59
What is this term 'world class'? Does playing in a world cup final make you world class? I think it does, so he does actually tick that box!

19 Jan 2017 14:16:40
My problem with Rojo is the way he defends when the ball is in the air. he can’t get a decent defending header. I remember like 3 against goals last season that he could easily avoid if he learn how to jump. in other aspects he is a decent defender, but I´m sure united can do better. I would pick Bailly over him any day of the week

Atko - It's whatever you want it to mean, your description for me is not solid though. You can have a team of 3-4 World Class stars that carry a team. You can't flip it over either, for example George Best was World Class but never played in a World Cup Final, how about Zlatan, Ronaldo, Kante, etc, etc.

World Class for me, is one of a handful of players in the World that play in that position and would be of interest to Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Utd, Chelsea, City, PSG, Juventus - if they became available. Most people understand World Class as an elite player in world football for their position, Rojo is nowhere near World Class imo as I could name 30+ CB's I'd prefer to have in my team and so could most people.

Betty

I thought the same thing myself about Stan but wrote it anyway!

On Rojo then the jury is still out probably i think but there has been a marked improvement this season depsite his difficulty in actually heading the ball!

As Shappy said he's not a left back and struggled there for a few reasons with his passing/ crossing being the main one.

19 Jan 2017 12:54:26
Jose said at the beginning of the season that he likes specialists rather than utility players. LVG had Blind at LCB and Rojo at LB, both utility positions. That inherent weakness, aggravated by Smalling's shortcomings, put more defensive strain on the midfield which had to provide the extra man.

As far as Rojo is concerned I did find it odd that a player who had become an integral part of a very good Argentinian defensive system looked so pathetic at United. It wasn't just at LB but also in the air where he was constantly beaten. And of course there was the whole passport issue when he was late joining the team.

The only onclusions we can come to is that Joe is playing him in the right position within the right system and with better training techniques resulting in Rojo being happier and more committed to the cause, allowing his talent to shine.

19 Jan 2017 17:40:30
maybe he just didn't have a great first season and like a lot of players took time to settle in the epl.
also a lot of players struggled in the lvg system

19 Jan 2017 17:51:36
Very simplified view that Jred - and probably right.

I think sometimes we look for more complicated answers thanare really needed.

I too think Rojo is now settling into a new team in a foreign (to him! ) league and country. Simples!

19 Jan 2017 18:18:32
Last year I couldn't wait for him to go. Now I am happy that he is a useful squad player.
Regular First team? For me the jury is still out and I have a feeling that perhaps never

19 Jan 2017 18:52:33
I don't want to say, I told you so. But I told you so 😁

19 Jan 2017 22:14:10
I swetty bollocks it's not far to say Stan Collymore never made a good point. Every time he missed a good chance to score a winning goal for the Scousers he made it a very good point for us
