This is probably a little left field but I see West Ham have bid to re-sign Jermain Defoe from Sunderland to aid their hapless search for success this season.

In his days as gaffer Fergie made some great top up signings in the January windows, some also out of left field like Larsson for instance. I am not saying Defoe is a supremely talented player but he is very good at what he does.

With all the chances United have created in games this season Defoe would surely have a hatful in this side and would provide a very different option to Zlatan. Another experienced head to help the likes of Martial and Rashford develop and take the onus off their young shoulders.

It won't happen but it could be a intelligent and beautiful option. Food for thought I guess.

It could be a shrewd signing, and Defoe doesn't seem to have lost his pace much, and his finishing has gotten top class.
But the issues with it is that, would he want to be on the bench for Utd or does he want to play every single game? He was on the tottenham bench and he left them for USA.
Would sunderland even consider selling him as the moment Defoe leaves, they are definitely getting relegated
We have Rashford, Martial for the same position as Defoe. We also have Rooney as well, doesn't make sense to me the move.
Although I do have a feeling we'll sign 2 players this month. One a Lindelof or some other longterm target and other a shrewd 33-34 year old for 1-1.5 years, maybe a defoe/ obi mikel/ fonte/ evra/ berbatov etc.
I'm surprised clubs haven't taken a gamble on berbatov as he can still score some great goals as he never relied on pace while playing.
I really wish we sign Evra this window, the old mentality he'll bring would be priceless and at this age, 10-15 games till the end of next season won't do anyone harm, and his crosses find the players unlike the aimless Valencia crossing.

I'd take him MAZE. I don't see a negative in having a proven goalscorer in the squad for a short amount of time. The Larsson comparison is astute.

Rohan I think Defoe would happily take United up on the opportunity to become a squad player as one final swan song at a big club for 12-18 months. This season Rash and Martial have been deployed mostly as wingers whereas Rooney seems to be preferred behind Zlatan so I feel there is certainly a spot for a squad striker at the moment.

On Evra however, I kind of see what you are getting at but the last few months before he left he was hopeless but something does need to happen at LB. I prefer Blind but he can sometimes get caught with pace and unlike most on here I do not rate Luke Shaw as this great talent that most do.

RWWD I think if the signings of the Larsson's and Zlatans are anything go by then age is just a number. If you still have it then you still have it and I believe Defoe still has ability to win matches.

Id sign just so Sunderland finally get relegated. Long overdue.

Evra, to be fair, Moyes was a terrible manager. Not sure if players would want to give his 100% for him. Evra, on okay wages, for 10-15 games for the next 18 months. Jones and Rojo are doing well atm, but 1-2 injuries and that stupid Darmian plays fullback for us who offers nothing. He just doesn't seem to improve as he started his career really well here.
Evra, maybe?
Defoe, no doubt his ability and he gets a chance to get some medals before he retires, how much money do you pay for him? Sunderland would be mad to sell him at any price.

{Ed025's Note - your right rohan, it would be suicide for sunderland to let him go but there may be clauses in his contract that allow him to leave mate..

Defoe's finishing, particularly from in and around 18 yards, has always ben top draw - world class. It's the rest of his game that has let him down throughout his career - his decision making and attacking positioning have prevented him from scoring another 8-10 goals per season and becoming a top, top player. But that said, 1 on 1 with a goalkeeper there are few players in world football I would put in front of him. I always thought he was a United player until I watched him a bit more and he didn't quite reach the levels which would have been expected.

Defoe no way. 8 million or so is stupid money for a 34 year old sub. I wonder would Sunderland swap him for rooney? At least that way we would improve the squad and save money😂
Evra even on a free is also not what I would consider an astute signing.
Berbatov would make me sense than defoe for me.

Don't need him anyway because apparently Rashford is going to be just like him :)
