Ed001, just to pick your brains if you're around mate. Further down the page you mentioned the "toxic" supporters in reference to the green and gold campaign which myself I thought was an embarrassment. All that was was vendors outside Old Trafford selling 10 pound scarves to tourists. RainfishMcKloot was a green and gold support. Says it all.
But I can't really see what the fans did last winter that was so bad. We had a herrific run of results and the atmosphere wasnt great which is to be expected. But for the club to pull out of transfer dealings (that were obviously far along in the process by the sounds of things) because of toxic fans still seems off to me. Am I missing something or do we not have all the pieces of the puzzle?

{Ed001's Note - I actually didn't have a problem with the green and gold personally, I agree with their reasoning, but they created a toxic atmosphere. You are right, the vendors then destroyed the whole campaign and turned it into exactly what the green and gold was supposed to stand against.

The problem with the fans was that the atmosphere around the club affects the advertisers. You had a horrific run of results, but the atmosphere was poor anyway, it was felt that managers were not given a chance before results turned. That Moyes and LVG were on a hiding to nothing, because the fans had made up their mind and were just waiting for it all to go bad. It is still felt that is a problem with regards to Mourinho, that a large proportion of fans do not want him and so are just awaiting their chance to give him grief, rather than getting behind the team.}

Ed001,

I don't really find that to be the case though, fans are definitely willing to give Jose the chance, everybody I know is anyway and not heard any murmurs at the stadium at all, everyone seems positive.

The same can be said for LVG and Moyes, many people were willing to give the managers a chance but when they have so much money to spend and inherit a title winning side you are expected to finish higher than 7th, or if you finish 4th one season you are expected to improve or at least finish 4th again. Maybe some fans have very high expectations and wouldn't be happy with anything but winning titles every year, but most fans are realistic and know that is not possible and would be happy to see gradual improvement.

Moyes and LVG underachieved more so than anyone could have been expected to allow to happen, LVG took over a team who had an attacking football philosophy and who fans loved watching 2 years earlier and made them pass the ball around and not have any shots, in my opinion we were quite right to ask for change.

{Ed001's Note - if you say so, but you are talking to 20 people and I am talking about what advertisers are saying and how it is felt within the game. You might want to take off those rose tinted glasses you always wear and see reality for a change.}

Who are these toxics though and if you are one, who do you actually want managing the club?

22 Nov 2016 23:18:09
Most of us on here are toxic cause we moan and groan when results aren't going our way. green and gold protests, no patients like myself.
Any manager needs time to get things right at leat 3 years now i was one who wantrd lvg out the door,
We have to come to realise it isn't a quick fix even if we spend big money on players its going to take time.
Scouting systems, academy's a new director.
And i had us down to win the league this year, its going to be a slow process i'm afraid.
Ed01 can i ask your opinion on pogba or is it too early for you to judge.

{Ed001's Note - I think Pogba is an excellent player, it is just that he needs the team set up a certain way to get the best from him. Give him cover behind and a partner alongside him, who will gel with him and drive from midfield when he steps back, and he will be a great player. The problem is that he struggles with timing, his runs are often badly timed, so there needs to be someone else making similar runs at other times to make the most of his runs. His surges create space in midfield, which no one is making the most of right now.}

Cheers ed one more thing .
Down at liverpool there didn't ye give a few managers a helping hand out the door, and ye had a big walk out protest, most liverpool fans wanted brenda out, so ed are we all a bit toxic?

{Ed001's Note - yes, you could say that, but Rodgers was given every chance to succeed and backed at the start. Even in his 3rd season, when it was clear he was a bumbling fool who got lucky, a large portion backed him when he was making idiotic decisions like putting out the reserves in the Bernabeu for a must-win Champions League match. So not so sure that is relevant. He was lucky to survive the first season, imo.

The comparison with the protest, on the other hand, is much more relevant and true. There is a definite problem bubbling under the surface there, but one that has, for now at least, been staved off by the hiring of Klopp. Hard to get on the back of owners who bring in Klopp. In the long term, it is unlikely FSG will stay the owners, so, depending on who comes in, the atmosphere at the club could also become just as toxic. I think those people who have been wanting FSG out might just regret it when they get their way. They are far from ideal, but I doubt any new buyer will be any better, sadly.

I think that is the same problem at United. No one likes the Glazers, but the reality is that any change will probably make little to no difference to the fans. It is likely that it will end up in the hands of a large number of institutional investors looking to make money.}

Cheers ed as you said its all about the money unfortunately.

{Ed001's Note - sadly it is. I think I would have to be considered at least partially in the toxic camp myself. Ticket prices are far too high.}

Sheds a bit of light on the term 'toxic' and you honesty is refreshing 001!

Never fully understood what toxic meant to different people/ fans but the above shows that we are probably all guilty of it to a degree.

{Ed001's Note - it is difficult to avoid being toxic at times, when you see the route football has taken. It has sold its soul. How can anyone be happy with that?}

Thanks for your replies ed001. Very interesting mate!

{Ed001's Note - you are very welcome mate.}

Which manager can survive a failure to meet expectations? Would Wenger remain at Arsenal if they finished 6th? And what will happen when he does leave if the new manager ends up not being able to maintain a Champions League spot?

Will he get 3 years? I doubt it. The fans are entitled to bitch and moan as, indeed, they have always done. It is the press that whips up the controversies. The 5th Estate has much to answer for beyond the realm of football. Toxicity is the new normal.
