Apparently Bobby Charlton made his debut 60 yrs ago today. A true all time great unlike our ' golden generation' who the media think are all time greats. Saw him play once in 1970.
Thanks for the memories sir Bobby.

Me and my mate hitched down to London on the Friday before Bobby's last match which was at Chelsea in April 1973. We slept at Heathrow airport pretending we were passengers waiting for a flight. Went to the match the next day and then hitched back afterwards. In those days we hitched to lots of matches as we were students and had very little money.

I had just come back from dossing in Munich! Saw the match - one nil to them? Osgood?

One of my favourite pieces of Celtic and United memorabilia i have is the programme from Bobby's testimonial in 1972, it was actually given to me by a rangers fan i worked with who stayed in Manchester at the time and attended the game he gave me it as he knew i was a big Celtic and United fan.

jamesbhoy - By any chance do you support Celtic and Manchester United? You don't mention it.

Harry what is the point in your snide comment? The posts above yours are interesting reads and then there is your usual pointless post.

Funny Harry, was thinking the same.

Any chance we can get a pop up or a warning siren on the site when its Maze's time of the month?! Jeez.

Very funny Harry. Hopefully James sees the funny side being a banter site and all.

Haha nice one Harry, i am first and foremost a Celtic fan but i adopted United as my favourite other team way back in the 70s when i was at primary school due to the bond between our clubs at the time and our shared traditions, i have been to Old Trafford many times for games between our great clubs.

maze and angelred don't worry about me i'm glaswegian i can deal with snidey sarcastic clowns who probably sound like squeaky henpecked ashley off corrie, his wife will probably give him a row when she gets in for having been on her laptop and demands he hurries up making her dinner and to hurry up with the hoovering sarcasm? us glaswegians invented it lol.

They might be a bit cranky jamesbhoy
Tis past their bedtime they could have been up late last nite.
Or else james they could be supporters of the blue jersey.

You can trace the decline in English football from the moment Charlton was subbed in the World Cup match against Germany in Mexico in 1970. You could make a case for him being the best English player of all time.

That thought crossed my mind Leahy, if that's the case they won't have had much fun supporting that mob in the last 4 years haha.

Shawthing

I remember the 1970 game when Charlton was subbed and remember my brother raging at it and yes as a world power we have never recovered despite touching high moments in 90 and 96. You might argue that Charltons ageing at United was part of our decline too.

A small story about Sir Bobby if I may. It was I believe 1969 and I was in a mixed prep school, Sir Bobbys daughter was in a different class of that school. One day he came to pick her up and I remember him arriving in what I think was a jag but the memory I have is the image of him walking up the school path against the flow of parents and kids and them all parting in front of him and stood in awe of him. I knew who he was after starting my support in 68 but to this day remember him parting the crowd and the excitement surrounding one of the all time greats.

I also remember his last game and it was tinged with sadness because we hadn't replaced him with any quality, those were difficult times as a United fan. Sir Bobbys career with us is rightly heralded.

People do get cranky on here during the international break.

Bobby Charlton's favourite player was Bobby Lennox of Celtic who played in the European Cup winning Celtic side of 1967.
