With the borefest of international soccer almost upon us I thought I would change the subject on here.

ED001 who in your opinion do you think was the least under rated player over the past 20 years. I am talking about a player who got limited to no recognition for what he did on the park during his playing days?

As a United fan this will seem a little controversial but for me I would say Steve Finnan. I thought Finnan was a solid part of what Liverpool endeavoured to achieve during that period but never once did I hear a commentator or see in the media Finnan getting a glowing report. It was always about Gerrard or Carragher or some fancy foreign signing.

It would be interesting to see what other posters views on this would be also. Remember you can only choose one so choose carefully!

{Ed001's Note - excellent choice Finnan, he was a fantastic player. I will put forward a few possibilities. Dan Petrescu is one I don't remember getting much hype. When did Irwin retire? I think he was United's best player of his time but Cantona and Schmeichel seemed to get all the glory. Irwin was always at least a 7 out of 10 player, even on his worst days, despite playing out of position at left back for a large part of his career, when he was naturally a right back. To be honest, you really do have to go back further really, as all the modern day players are so hyped up in the Prem it is difficult to call anyone underrated! Steve Bould just about makes it into the last 20 years and he was very underrated. The closest to underrated in modern era would be players like Carrick.

Probably the most underrated player of my lifetime would be Vinnie Jones, as no one seemed to realise that the guy could actually play. When he dropped down a division and was allowed to just play football, rather than being instructed to frighten opponents and kick them in the air, he went the entire season without a single card. I really think he was so much better than he was ever allowed to be by his managers, who just saw him as a thug in boots. He was better than that though.}

Denis irwin for me.
Not only could he defend and get forward .
He had a free kick on him that would put some of the best forwards in the world to shame.

05 Oct 2016 13:18:59
Leahy12 and Ed001 I would definitely agree with Irwin for sure. Not so sure about Vinnie Jones though Ed I just get flash backs of the crazy gang every time I hear his name!

Bould is also a very interesting choice. I would tend to agree regarding the modern day footballer which is why it makes it difficult to find one who does his job well yet gets no media exposure. I think players like Carrick, Park Ji, Makalele etc definitely had thier time in sun in regards to plaudits whereas players like Steve Finnan and I agree with Irwin did not really.

{Ed001's Note - Park defo got loads of exposure due to his nationality, so he got loads of coverage purely because of it. It went to his head as well, he became a right bighead off the pitch. Vinnie is hard done by because he was a truly hard man, so he was used to just be hard, rather than being given any chance to play. Like I said, his one season he was given freedom to play, not one card. That takes some doing when you consider the rep he had at the time. Refs would book him for coughing too loud at that time.}

05 Oct 2016 13:33:31
Yeah I suppose when you put it like that ED it is remarkable that he never got a card that season. I think sometimes refs already make thier minds up who is getting a card for thier first offence before the game starts.

I didn't know that about Park. I thought he always seemed like a nice guy. You reckon off the field he was a bit of twit?

I would also throw Dirk Kuyts name in there as well ED. Always played for the team and never complained about where he played be that centre forward, on the wing or wing back. He just seemed glad to be part of the team.

{Ed001's Note - Park would often ignore fans asking for autographs outside the ground etc. I know a bunch of Man Utd fans who all complained he was the only one who refused to stop and sign autographs. Apparently he was very much the same out and about. Not like Keane, who was shy, he just thought he was too important because he was a huge hero back home.

Kuyt used to get a lot of plaudits from Liverpool fans, so I find it difficult to include him.}

Another player who i think would have got on the list was peter beardsley
There was a lot of talk about rush. Aldridge. daglish back then.

05 Oct 2016 13:51:46
I thought Kuyt was rubbish, lots of effort but usually average output.

I'd pick Carrick, this is his 11th year and he's mostly been first choice. Very understated, he has been the oil that kept the machine running.

05 Oct 2016 13:57:17
Irwin tops my list notwithstanding the obvious bias. Tim Cahill ex Everton and millwall player also worth a shout and going back 30 years Mickey hazard wads an old favourite if mine.

05 Oct 2016 14:21:13
Irwin. The Eds comments about him being a 7 out of 10 player even on his bad days sums him up perfectly. I think SAF referred to him the same way.

05 Oct 2016 16:32:17
Maze, I have my grammar Nazi hat on today. It should be, 'most under-rated', not, 'least under-rated'. Sorry, I'm bored today.

05 Oct 2016 19:44:52
Gary mabbutt?

05 Oct 2016 20:39:34
Noucamp I seen that after I posted. I was hoping the lack of intelligence on here would have seen me get away with that one.

AJH like I said I feel Carrick has had his plaudits over his career and Ken time Cahill was certainly a media darling during his time at Everton (although it does still surprise me that a CL club didn't come calling for him) .

05 Oct 2016 20:54:43
Cough cough. I saw that. cough cough.

05 Oct 2016 21:41:21
Paul Scholes, Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce, Ronnie Johnson. To name just United players. I've put Scholes because I don't think he got the recognition he deserved even doing it all without the need for a football agent.

05 Oct 2016 22:36:37
Supasub isn't Scholes lauded as one of the best players to ever play in the PL?

06 Oct 2016 00:18:45
Yossi benayoun was highly underrated imo. never really got any praise but he used to come up with the goods on a few occasions. An intelligent little player.

06 Oct 2016 00:29:12
Maze, yes he is by fellow professionals. I'm not sure as much by "football fans", (ironic term) . For those who played against him, understand the game, yes. The rest, no.

{Ed007's Note - What about Gary McAlister?}

06 Oct 2016 00:32:12
Also props to Paulo Di Canio, (a Saf favourite) and Jay Jay okocha. Both players who I think could have charged extra for the entrance fee imhho.

06 Oct 2016 01:04:06
Gary mcallister, yes Ed. Probably another one if your not fishing for insults. Then I think of Gordon Strachan (for a few years as a player and his post match analysis as a manager) . Tugay of Blackburn, deitmar hamman? (Cl final, Gerrard! ), someone said makelele and I think he got the plaudits as he got a position named after him and propelled lampard.

{Ed001's Note - Hamann is a great shout, he was fantastic for years for Liverpool. Tugay is not a bad shout either. I think Mcallister got a lot of plaudits, but only at the very end of his career, when people finally realised how good he was. Ok I am biased on this one as he was my uncle's best mate, but what about Gary Speed? He was a fantastic player.}

06 Oct 2016 07:52:46
Speed yes great shout a fantastic player. Paul McGrath was possibly the best player for Ireland for many years and could have played in any team and made it better.

06 Oct 2016 08:52:37
United fans all knew how important Roy Keane was but did he get the recognition as a player he deserved? Only winning PFA player of the year once. He was an absolute beast of a player and one of the reasons Scholes was able to perform as at such a high level.

06 Oct 2016 10:19:54
Milner from current crop,
Parlour from a non utd team and
Butt from Utd.

06 Oct 2016 12:14:28
Bebe obviously, no one rated him at all. Lol.

06 Oct 2016 12:33:21
I was going to suggest all of those mdb.

Butt was always under rated and the forgotten one of his peers. Everyone remembers Keane and Scholes in midfield, Butt played his fair share of games ' possibly because they were always suspended!

Phil Neville as well, who became a special team player against Terry Henry and Pires'Arsenal!

How about Eric Djemba-Djemba ;)

06 Oct 2016 15:25:39
Faustino Asprilla (spelling) for Newcastle United, he had magic at his feet.

06 Oct 2016 22:56:36
Titus Bramble :-)

07 Oct 2016 17:09:40
Matt Holland and Scott Parker, anyone?

08 Oct 2016 02:29:46
Matt Holland possibly not too sure about Parker. He was hit and miss for me.

Graeme Le Saux was another one for me.
