So it looks like Rooney has been "rested" for the Feyenoord game.

Valencia, Jones, Schweinsteiger, Lingard, Mkhitaryan are the other players rested.

Jones is injured again. Schweinteiger is omitted for obvious reasons. Valencia needs a rest after the travelling he has clocked up during the international break. Mkhitaryan is injured and as Mourinho has said Lingard is dropped after a poor performance at the weekend.

Wayne isn't injured or really in need of a rest. Does this have something to do with Mourinho's comments avout no one being bigger than the club? Maybe I'm speculating about things that aren't there.

What will be interesting to see is whether we keep our 4231 shape without Rooney available or do we switch to 433 which looks the more batural fit for our squad.

jose has said he what's him fresh for next league game . in his 30s now the lads played every game plus englang .

rojo starts as well, shouldn't really be a surprise jose said a few week back he would rotate, depay and schinds yet to kick a ball may well get a game .
think there will be a few changes.

14 Sep 2016 17:09:27
What happens if we go there and are incredible without Rooney?

14 Sep 2016 17:20:23
I think he wants to see the team play without Rooney, because he wants to play a team without Rooney in an ideal world. It will be very interesting to see how we play without him, I suppose we can speculate better after the event - in fairness to Rooney whenever he hasn't played we have looked just as bad in recent years BUT I imagine that is because we are not used to playing without him. Lingard and Miki showed how helpful it can be to have a run of games learning how your comrades play on the big day etc, they were set-up to fail last week in many ways.

14 Sep 2016 17:41:28
i thought linders played really well in his first game in the charity shield . he jusr had a bad game against city . it happens
same with pogbs he is every bit good enough to play in a 4231 . which changes due to tactics anyhow .
no need to change everything just because he had a poor game.

14 Sep 2016 17:49:09
look8ng forward to seeing some of the other lads get a chance as well.

14 Sep 2016 17:50:34
It takes a lot of energy to be as poor as Rooney has been for the last two seasons. You have to cover a lot of ground to hit long balls out to the right wing, and it's really draining to shout in the ref's ear for 90 minutes. Hopefully he'll be rested enough to be a constant disappointment again at the weekend.

14 Sep 2016 19:29:05
Would be nice to see Pogba playing behind Ibra and Carrick holding. As to the wings I believe we would not really have to worry with the options we have.
Interesting to see how all would react if we do very well with many goals and exciting football.

we have only lost one game all season against a very good city side.

it will be interesting if we win tonight if people actually cheer up .
i have a feeling tonight for some united will be able to do no wrong.

I'll just be interested to see how we set up without Rooney. I want to know whether the team set up is being adapted to try and fit Rooney in, or whether the way we are set up is just how Jose wants to set up.

Personally I am of the opinion that the players we have suit 433 far more than 4231, since Scholes dropped out of the No.10 position we haven't had anyone play great football there.

Rooney's best football has come as a No.9 or wide left. Kagawa flopped, Mata has looked unconvincing centrally.

Our team historically has always been a team that has strong box to box type midfielder over nimble technical players Robson, Ince, Keane ect. Our most successful creative players have always been wide players Chalton, Best, Giggs, Beckham Ronaldo ect.

I feel we would be best suited to 433, and the evidence would suggest it too. All of our best performances in the last few years have come from this set up. The last time we played great football consistently was around 2008 when we played 433 with Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo upfront.

Its time we moved away from trying to copy what is popular atm and do things the way we have had success with.

you are getting caught up with the formation far to much imo .
tactics play a far bigger part the formation is just a ruff gide.
both formations will have 1 striker, 2 wide men, 3 in the middle .

tactics will decide how the players set up .

9 times out of 10 jose will go with similar tactics, you normally know how a jose team will play, it doesn't change much .

"its time we moved away from trying to copy what is popular atm and do things the way we have had success with. "shappy

strange thing to say that, popular at the moment? jose has been playing that way for ages

do things the way we have success with? again jose has won everything more or less playing the same way .

15 Sep 2016 10:55:08
Completely agree Shaps. Strong powerful central core to facilitate pace and creativity out wide. And now we have a real target man to keep the central defenders occupied too. I'd love to see Pogba, Schniderlin and Herrera given a shot in the middle tonight with two of Memphis, Rash and Tony out wide.

15 Sep 2016 11:01:37
Top post Shappy and totally agree.

15 Sep 2016 11:34:59
Great post shappy. 100 percent agree.

We must set up the way it suits the players at our disposal.

15 Sep 2016 11:36:00
Jred, the difference between 433 and 4231 is where the playmaker plays. In 433 they sit deeper between the midfield and defence which gives you options to build play quickly from the back, effectively giving you a better chance of launching counter attacks. 4231 plays with a playmaker further forward ahead of the midfield but behind the forward line, this works better when you have a lot of possession against a team that will sit deep as your creative player is closer to the oppositions goal.

4231 is currently the most popular formation, which is probably down to this obsession of having ball playing centre backs which makes it less important to have a deeper playmaker.

I feel in the EPL which is a very end to end league being able to launch your attacks quicker from deep is far more effective.

We have always be a quick countering team who play with width, why try and copy what other teams do, when what we do has brought us so much success?

15 Sep 2016 11:41:49
lol
this site is getting worse.

we played well 8 years ago, so we have to play like that.
we where even better when we played 442 imo

scholes and kean in the middle ( did scholes really play 10 ) 2 flying wingers

bubble gum tactics described above, i'm pretty sure its a wind up but i'm starting to worry its not.

15 Sep 2016 12:24:36
shaps
not joking are you,
the play maker can drop deep make it a 3 in the middle the cm can push up, the full backs can make the cm a 5 .
4231 is popular because it is flexible, ridgid formations are a thing of the past .

we are not trying to copy what other teams do, we are playing the way the manager has done the last 10 year .
that what happens when you get different managers .
its different to fergy and moyes and lvg .

15 Sep 2016 12:42:58
Bring back LVG I say.

15 Sep 2016 12:47:15
Jred it's evident that most people of us feel that we would be much more stronger being set up in the right way. So u still maintain if Pogba plays in the attacking middle we would post a stronger performance.
But yes I agree that if we play well tonight the right way Mou will have a good problem in his hands. 😀😀.

15 Sep 2016 12:55:22
brendan could be right we have lost a match so.
idea number 1 seems to be, after one loss jose one of the most decorated managers of all time, should ditch his game plan which has won him them titles and copy what fergy did 10 year ago.

so people wanting the tactical genius of lvg back can only be a draw away.

dont take this the wrong way i'm not sure i understand that post .
what is the right way, will jose not set us up in the right way, will he not have a style of football he wants to play and off bought players to fit that style?

i think pogba is a very good player he just didn't have a very good game against city .
should pep change citys formation everytime de buryne has a bad game .

should jose change our style everytime we lose?

pogba will be a top player, i'm sure he will show that in time and i'm sure he will show you and others he can play cm

if we play well tonight do we approach the game on sunday the same way . because many teams set up different in europe to the epl .

if ibra is on the bench and rash plays well is that ibra dropped for sunday .
i don't see how playing well tonight is a problem for jose.

what is the right way?

15 Sep 2016 13:15:30
Out of interest why is what Sir Alex did 10 years ago out dated while Mourinho using the same tactics for 10 years not?

Will be interested to hear your thoughts on this Jred? Lol.

15 Sep 2016 13:41:40
shap
who said it was outdated? have i missed that, to be honest i might have but i can't see it .

but why should jose copy how sir alex played 10 year ago, or 15 year or 20? that time/ era/ team have gone .
anyone who has watched a bit of football knows how jose is going to play . jose is a top top manager why suddenly change after getting beat of city?
he won at inter porto everywhere he has been at . tactics changed everygame but you knew it was a jose team.

each manager has a different way of doing things, i think some fans still haven't got use to the fact that that fergy has gone and our style will change from manager to manager.
some times for the good some times for the bad.
but jose will of planned all summer and its not as easy as 4231 or 433 the tactics, players roles will change game from game .

we won't pick a team based on what fergy done when he had tevez ronaldo or rooney .
or the fact that we have had robson ince charlton best . why would it .

jose will be positive but he will do it the jose way.

15 Sep 2016 14:50:39
Jred agreed that we should not always be making major changes but tweaking. But I have every confidence in Mou that he will get it right. It's only 4 games and we have a good squad.
If Ibra is not performing of course we should then try Rash. But I don't have the opportunity to see what's happening in training so only Mou will know and I will try and stand by his decision.
Point is I am confident we will get back to CL and we will push for title challenge. As to where we will end up only God knows. Else we will have to be patient and stand behind our team and support them all the way.
