Have to say I wasn't keen on Jose, and still have my reservations in the medium-long term, but I'd have chosen him over Guardiola. I've said it all along, to city supporting mates, colleagues and my dad who have all been very pleased with themselves since it was announced, I honestly don't think he'll do anything major at City. I could be totally wrong, but I don't think their trophy cabinet will bulge much more than it did under Pellegrini. For me, even with the trophies he has won, he is still untested in many areas. I could have won a load of trophies with the 2 sides he has had, in the leagues they were in, so the fact he did is no great achievement for me.

I think he and city may have a much harder time than people expect. But, I think Jose/ United will also end in tears, but hopefully with some trophies first to ease the breakup a bit, and leaving a better first 11 and squad to the next manager.

we went for moyes and people said he wasnt tested at the top level

pep has won the lot in 2 different leagues at the top level .
and people say he isn't tested at the bottom level
lvg finished 4th with munich and everyone told me he was a great manager

messi is amazing, prob wouldn't be as good at stoke because there players are not on the same level . he would still be a great player.

It would seem that I watched a completely different match to a lot of people on this site. City limped past a very poor Sunderland side creating next to nothing in terms of chances and yet Pep is a genius.

Bringing his fullbacks infield might have helped City dominate the center of the pitch but it offered nothing offensively (if anything it made it a lot easier for Sunderland to double up on the wide players) and would leave them incredibly vulnerable against a side with decent wingers.

I was incredibly bored for near enough the whole game (something I could rarely say about City since the money came in ( and I was very close to switching over. It was like watching LVG's United and I can only reiterate my delight that we didn't get lumbered with Guardiola.

Regardless, I'm bracing myself for the Pep love-in next weekend when they get a last minute penalty to rescue a point. 'See we told you that he could do it away at Stoke', they will say.

He overthinks things to try an prove what a genius he is. Didn't a truly great manager say football is a simple game complicated by idiots. Well he must have had a crystal ball. He's just an extreme version of lvg.

awful manager after 1 game

im sure all the other great managers will show what a prat pep is .

i watched pep try some thing different .
spurs under poch =poor
koeman = no better

City didn't look any great shakes, i don't think we have anything to worry about from them this season we have shown we can match them in the transfer market with the purchase of Pogba. We have bought well and strengthened the team, while they are in dissaray dropping the number one keeper. I think this will be our year.

Jred, You've said Peps been in 2 leagues and won the lot . Although domestically Peps time at Bayern seems a success, what a lot of people don't no or seem to forget is, Bayern brought in Pep for the purpose of european success (UCL) . Pep didn't have any UCL success through out his 3 yrs w Bayern, and in that respect, the reason he was bought in, deems him as a failure!

I wanted Pep over Mourinho. For many reasons, but we have Jose now and no matter what, so far he has done more than any new manager has before to show his fans and the world he means business and how fitting United + Mourinho is, also how attractive the club has become again, able to reach out to the worlds top players w/ o UCL football. I think whatever Pep is trying to do, whether it was here or at Citeh, will take time. Peps philosophy, imo will take a bit to fully infiltrate itself into this league. Jose knows this league and has won it more than any other top Manager out there right now, he has everythibg he wants and needs for quick success and that is what we are after! Pep if he is at Citeh passed 3 years, Citeh will have the better manager in the long term!

Nobody said that he was an awful manager?

But by your logic - if a manager asks all of his players to wear dresses and sun hats and they play badly - he is still a clever manager because he tried something different?

What he tried was incredibly ineffective from an attacking point of view and somewhat negative considering they were up against a team that many fancy will be relegated. Last season City trounced Sunderland at home - and yet in spite of having the same squad and spending over £100m - Pep's 'clever' tactics relied on a very late own goal to scrape a victory and produced about as much entertainment as a narcoleptic clown.

You're as bad as the British press. Blind love for a manager that has done little to earn it. Ironic really that you didn't support LVG in the same way given that he employed incredibly similar tactics - and you know - was our manager rather than being the manager of one of our rivals.

14 Aug 2016 05:41:24
Mort, you're completely right! Pep is a more extreme version of LVG. They're coaching is of the same handbook. So many similarities from Citeh today, to how LVGs United where. Difference is, Pep walks in to a title winning squad With just a few tweaks needed, and by January his team should get to grips with his philosophy as Citeh no doubt have the fire power United had lacked while under LVG.

I think pep has had a very blessed managerial career. He has inherited top teams in barcelona and bayern. City are good but an aging squad but then again they bought 8 players and not sure which manchester club spent more money, but they spend loads this window. I think its way too early to dismiss anyone in this league and let's wait and see where things are come christmas time.

I missed all the games flying back from summer vacation just in time for our game today :)

14 Aug 2016 07:34:44
jred did he try something new or was just trying something that worked for bayern, with the difference being he has got lot less talented players at his disposal to do the same. To use zlatan's analogy at bayern he had ferraris to do this job, here he has fiats and he is trying to use fiats to do a ferrari's job. I am not a football manager or a car mechanic but i think i am pretty confident that won't work, with cars or players.

Top top top Redseven,

I think we qre very lucky we didn't go for Pep.

Pep was never my first choice. Infact Ancelloti was and then Mourinho.

I hink city next week againt stoke will be caught out. Shaqiri will have a lot of fun against citys defense.

14 Aug 2016 09:06:02
Agree with Brendan.

Here we are again, a new season. My thoughts on Pep were made some time ago. When appointing LvG I thought we were trying to build Barcelona style possession football, therefore the logical choice to follow LvG was Pep. By not doing that it seemed there wasn't as clear a plan as I believed there should be. I wanted Jose after SAF and the club blew it, but once we didn't appoint Pep it became obvious that there was not a long term structural plan for our style and then it had to be Jose. I actually think Jose may be around for longer than people think. The clubs he has managed Chelsea and Real Madhouse are short term as has been shown with all their appointments. I wonder if Jose will have more control at OT over player purchases, therefore less conflict. I sensed that Jose was not happy selling Cech to a direct rival and I doubt that will happen with us.
It will be interesting but it is going to take a little time to get moving, then I expect him to succeed. Right man is now in place and for those who wanted Giggs, the season has started and he has no role, yet some wanted him to have the biggest one! I think Jose will be a success and for perhaps longer than we think. Lastly watch out for the Scousers early games, I have a feeling they will start quickly.

boys take the red glasses off . its ok to appreciate other managers and players.

14 Aug 2016 10:14:38
Appreciation is one thing. But your going beyond that because "he tried something different".

14 Aug 2016 10:21:31
really mort?
where did i go beyond that.

14 Aug 2016 10:22:00
What about John Stones, working with Peo every day and encouraged to play football at all times then joining up with the England squad and Fat Sam telling him to lump it into row z at every opportunity.

14 Aug 2016 11:38:13
Your practically squealing like a girl because he fiddled with his full backs. Read back what you put mate.

14 Aug 2016 12:06:48
mort really?
i said it was clever.

14 Aug 2016 12:18:35
And most on here disagree. I don't see what's so clever about it.

14 Aug 2016 12:24:19
mort
