Chelsea fan here in peace. I just want to know your honest opinions on Rooney. I have a buddy that claims his defense is class, and he will be crucial in your midfield. Now I don't think he is the player he once was I still think he is still very good, I just can't see him making as big of an impact like in seasons past. Cheers to a good season!

You fool. What have you done?

05 Aug 2016 19:44:44
Tell your mate to look at what Jose said ' Rooney won't play in midfield he is not a midfielder ' opinion is solid on this page some want him sold some think he is still great. It's a new season so we will have to wait and see. We are all hoping he will be better than the last 3 seasons but it would be unusual for that to happen with a 30 year old. But its not beyond possibility. We are hopeful
Enjoy your season mate I think it will be fun watching conte he looks bonkers☺.

Honestly, I would say Rooney has been a great player for United, and deserves more respect than he probably gets. Unfortunately, he played his best football at a relatively young age, and has spent the last few years trying to rediscover that form, but never has. He is still a decent player, but I genuinely find it difficult to see where he fits in now.
He is not a midfielder. He is a forward, end of. But he no longer has the pace and power to be a top forward. He is still a decent player to have around, but for me he should not be the guaranteed starter he seems to be. He will still do the business against 'weeker' teams, but if we are to compete with the very best, we need better players.
If Rooney's form at any given time justifies a place in the team, then fair enough. But he shouldn't be shoe-horned into the team because he is Wayne Rooney.

since fergy left the whole team has under performed but imo rooney was still one of our better players . i think more was expected of him due to his profile but more or less everyone had a dip in form .

i think under jose we will be much better the team will be better and therefore the players will look better . i think rooney will continue to look one of our better players.

Matt, Hi
Personally I think Rooney has given great service to us and country whilst being played out of his best position for long periods. He still has class but I think his touch, burst of speed has suffered and whilst he can turn a game occasionally, he doesn't do it as often. He has the passion to do everything on a pitch but his ability has hit its peak and is on the way down. Still a good team player but not as much an influence. Cheers to a promising season for all fans :)

Rooneys best years are well and truly behind him just as a certain Germans are!

Between them that's about £500k a week! Money which I feel could be spent elsewhere!

Now his testimonial is done and dusted, move him on, the new poster is in town!

My opinion which I'm entitled to although I still may get slaughtered!?

I agree with Ken.

He has been poor/ average for a long time. Expect more from a club captain of an elite team with the wage he commands. But a fresh start this season, hopefully he will take the bull by the horns. England manager changing could be a major benefit as well, he has a lot to prove and last time he had a lot to prove he was fantastic for a short while.

Should be a very interesting season.

"Expect more from a club captain of an elite team with the wage he commands"
thats 100 % my point .
would he of played as bad if he wasnt payed what he is, or captain or rooney .

lot of players have been under par last few year . 40 mil mata the worldclass bastion 33 mil herrera .

05 Aug 2016 21:57:09
Ha beast reeling in jred, why have you asked that question matt 😂.

05 Aug 2016 22:00:13
Cheers guys. Great stuff.

05 Aug 2016 22:21:54
Jred - I have been very very critical of Mata and I gave Schweini the benefit of the doubt until recently due to injuries and moving countries etc. Herrera has featured sporadically, like Kagawa he is not held to the same standards as he is not treated the same (or compensated anywhere near the same) .

Every one of those examples were dropped for poor form, other players were not moved out of position to accommodate them either. They are not afforded special treatment and in fact the one that expects special treatment it seems is being shifted on ASAP.

The thing is Rooney is treated differently because he has been paid an obscene amount of money for nominal return, he is played irrespective of form or fitness and is the captain of club and country. If Bebe was captain, undroppable and paid a fortune I would expect more from him too, so this is not because his name is Rooney. The club are paying for a 7*hotel and getting 3* service. Because of the 7* prices and some relatively meaningless awards (captaincy) it attracts a lot of attention and the hotel hasn't had a paint job for 5 years!

I don't pay a junior employee the same as a senior one because I don't expect the same performance. If I pay more money I expect more for that cash, if I allocate a better job title then I expect better performance befitting the title, (not less than when I gave them the title) . It works in the real world and it also works in the football world normally.

Rooney gets a lot of attention because of the captaincy situation for club and country, he has benefited immensely from that. His foundation, his own sponsorships, legacy, book deals in the future etc will all command more money because of the attention captains are afforded - he receives extra benefits but for the past 3 years at least he has been living off his reputation (I'd say 5 years aside from that 2 month spell under Moyes) .

I like Rooney a lot. He is also a club legend who will most likely top our goalscoring chart and has given us a number of years of good service. He is also one of the most passionate players on the pitch week in, week out and has taken on his captaincy role on wholeheartedly. I'll always allow him more leeway for all of this and was really hoping he could adapt to a deeper role. However, it didn't work and realistically, he has dipped to the level of a player on the fringe of the first 11 and should be compensated accordingly. The issue most people have is with the fact he is amongst our top earners and has been deemed undroppable, and I tend to agree. If he was on £110-150k/ week, I don't think anyone would have an issue, much like when other legends passed their respective peaks. However, his bumper deal from Moyes has been a poisoned chalice of which he cannot live up to. It's a world class wage being paid to an over the hill player - similar to Basti. This accompanied with LvG shoehorning him into the side has led to many being frustrated with him and thinking perhaps the team would benefit if those finances were spent elsewhere.

Personally, I think it would suit him better if he saw out this season as a rotational member of the squad before having a last hurrah in the US. Admittedly it's a lot to pay for a player of his ilk, but he's done a good service to the club and I can afford him another year provided it's not to the starting XI's detriment.

i think its a bit more sim0le than that .
a manager will pick his best, not who is paid the most.
i am not saying rooney is our best player or worldclass but i would of picked him just like moyes roy and lvg did and i suspect jose will .

who would you pick gor unitrd and england b3fore him? i would be amazed if the managers who work with the players agree with you

i don't care what mataa gets paid
i don't care rashford gets paid
i don't care what rooney get paid .

rooney has been at the club for 12 years! he has been one of our best players for 12 years, read in the paper form jose lvg moyes di maria ibra he is respected .
you wanted bastian to be captain.

for england its the same, he is captain because he has nore goal than any other player, he is the most experianced player.
who would be your england captain?

i have playd a bit of footy myself, i pick my better players, i think rooney has been that he has scored more and played better than herrera and co.

moyes fergy roy lvg and jred all picked him i suspect jose will as well
ps. been out tonight and had a few.

06 Aug 2016 00:12:02
somer
how do you think i ta will do .
?

when do you drop him?

06 Aug 2016 00:23:37
when do we drop. mik.
or ibra or martial

it will be interesting to see if rooney is playing well and maybe ibra has not scored or mik has a kagawa

again it seems some people think some players should start, ibra.

others have to work for the place .

yer beast i know rooney only got picked for his name, what if rooney got picked because me roy lvg and jose thougjt he was the best option

do you know better?

06 Aug 2016 00:30:24
it was the kids 18th, explained the above.
ed, that was in my aboc e post.

06 Aug 2016 01:02:40
Given our current squad always a starter for me.

06 Aug 2016 02:10:35
Jred - I think I do know better yes. I agree with SAF. You can have Hodgson, Moyes and LVG in your corner mate, no worries.

In all seriousness, I just don't think he did enough last season to have started as many games. I hope Mourinho picks on form and if Rooney deserves to play then I will be happy.

Rooney had a handful of games where he played well last season. On paper I would not have him starting for my Man Utd first 11. Managers don't get every call right and more often than not Rooney is one they have gotten wrong imo. However if he plays well (like any player), they will get my full backing. It's why I didn't like TFM being dropped.

06 Aug 2016 04:23:21
Jred drinking? I'd never have guessed :)

06 Aug 2016 06:47:17
Oh dear jred meltdown. One of the reasons I don't get involved in these Rooney debates anymore.
The middle ground has gone and there is only the view that he is a fat uselss lump or he is a well respected club legend.
I say he is both. People get far too touchy about Rooney.

06 Aug 2016 06:58:49
He has given 12years, mainly loyal service.

Unfortunately we are now in the 13th. Law of diminishing returns now I am afraid.

06 Aug 2016 08:54:20
no melt down.
drunk yes .
still talking more sense than beast tho ;)

06 Aug 2016 10:06:41
**** me, I wish you woukd stop discussing money where football is concerned. It's embarrassing.

06 Aug 2016 10:46:58
Have I missed another Rooney debate, damn.

06 Aug 2016 17:49:35
The argument of he has scored more than any other always seems a little strange. With that thinking Sir Bobby should still be in our first 11, and England's too until recently. That is the past, this is now and he shouldn't be a guaranteed starter for either, as the last three seasons and the euros this summer showed, not his record against the poor teams we played in qualifying. Both club and country need to move on and move forward.
