I read the Fellaini debate on here the other day with interest. On a slightly different note, I'd like to open a debate for posters and Eds on Hererra. A fan favourite we all love due to his passion, but is he actually good enough for a title winning side and what does he bring to the team? Would you be sad to see him sold?

Agree1 Disagree0

He will be a key player this season in my opinion Eric. If Mourinho can iron out his positional sense and get him doing the little things right he will flourish.

Herrera is one of those players if we let slip will go on to great things somewhere else in my opinion.

04 Aug 2016 11:23:09
Good question Eric, I simply do not know; i am torn when it comes to him. If he could be consistent with his displays then for sure he is good enough. Question though is, has any coach given him enough of a chance to show his consistency in the role given?

04 Aug 2016 11:34:01
My opinion on Herrera is that he fails to impress. take away the fact he's a nice guy and shows passion and you have a pretty average player who gets knocked off the ball far to easy and also loses possession far to much.
He has shown he can be a good player but he is not and never will be s game changer, maybe the league is too physical for him.

04 Aug 2016 11:51:25
I'm a fan of his but he has struggled to stamp his authority on the team. The problem will be the vast depth of players we have in CM including Carrick, Blind, Schweini, Ander, Fellaini at current. that's without considering Pogba (or another transfer) and TFM who can play there. This area of the field is the most up in the air for me, I'm intrigued to see what Jose sees as his strongest options.

04 Aug 2016 11:55:46
He is a squad player, nothing more than that.

04 Aug 2016 12:00:33
Love how he plays, always thought he was stifled by LVG. With the right Manager, tactics, and team mates, I am hoping he will shine.

04 Aug 2016 12:08:38
Lots to prove. I think pogba would be a really good foil for him in midfield. Morgan also with a kit to prove for me.
I'd back Herrera and Morgan to improve more than fellaini.

04 Aug 2016 12:40:03
Personally i think Herrera is a great ambassador for the club but he does get knocked off the ball too easily. I think he needs to improve his upper body strength or learn a martial art to ninja people.

04 Aug 2016 13:12:05
Ajh, ken

I agree he has a nice style of play and is capable of good things Imo, but where would he play? I'm assuming a front 4 out of these 5 ibra, Rooney, martial, mickey and rashford. That leaves 2 CM positions. Assuming Pogba is one, and he is best going forwards, I'm struggling to see a regular place for Herrera as he's also better going forward.

Do you have any thoughts on where he fits in or whether he's a regular starter or more used in rotation?

04 Aug 2016 13:12:43
Totally depends on how we set up, he isn't suited to being in a two man midfield in the EPL. Him and Pogba as a two would be asking for trouble.

But as one of a three he could flourish. He has work rate, good going forward and is tenacious. He lacks positional discipline, but if Jose can help bring on that side of his game he could excel next season.

So for me 4231 he is a squad player, 433 and it could he his season.

CSM's post on pep and the prem league is spo on!

And to add to this thread, i think we will win the league this season and its next season that will prove to be more difficult!

04 Aug 2016 13:49:13
That's how I feel Shapperinho. And considering our signings of Mickey and Ibra on top of the likes of Rooney, Martial and Rashford I'm struggling to see us playing 433 on a regular basis. May well be wrong tho.

04 Aug 2016 14:09:22
For me it totally depends on the form of two players, Rooney and Rashford.

Mkhitaryan and Zlatan are almost certain starters, Martial is almost garenteed also. So this leaves Rooney as a No.10, is he good enough? Can he perform well enough to demand a place in the 11? I think he falls into a catagory where he is obviously on the decline, and doesn't do quite enough to justify having the team built around him, but he is probably too good to be on the bench which has left three managers trying to crowbar him into a line up. This is at the expense of other players both in and not in the starting 11.

Rashford on the other hand has been so electric over the last 6 months its hard not to have him in the team.

I think just like with RvP, Rooney and Zlatan won't gel as a duo. To be honest I can't rememebr Rooney ever working well in a strike partnership, RvN was possibly the closest to a working partnership, but it still didn't truely click. He didn't work well with any of our other strikers, Tevez, Berbatov, Saha, Solskjear or RvP. He hasn't eber clicked with any at international level either.

It could be his rounded skill set and his do it all himself attitude that causes that. But he has never worked well in tandum with another striker.

That is my concern with Zlatan, already we have seen them getting in eachothers way and not really working well together. Maybe its teething problems, but I suspect it could be more.

Then we move onto Rashford, his form has ment he is playing too well to drop. Will that continue? Is so where does he fit? I can see him playing on the right with Martial on the left, with maybe Mkhitaryan behind Zlatan.

But then that leaves no place for Rooney and Pogba being played in a two man midfield that doesn't get the best out of him.

No doubt the squad is better, but I'm not sure how all the pieces fit in together, it still feels like several of the starting 11 will have to tailor their game to fit others in.

i love the way people think miki will take the prem by storm just like kagawa for example .

we have great attacking options jose will pick from them all.
ibra and rooney imo will do fine depay needs to step up and i'm a massive martial fan but it could be a hard year for him this year .

if we sign pogba jose won't play herrera next to him that often .
wig played well against everton i might get the nod and surprise a few.

04 Aug 2016 16:40:08
Miki could also be a de bruyne and imo if kept fellaini will start a max of 8 league games. I can see him playing carrick and pogba, more often than not or Morgan and pogba.

04 Aug 2016 16:56:41
Agree to an extent jred, there are no guarantees with Mickey or any of the other transfers. And the Kagawa deal should surely act as a reminder of that. However, you would think with Jose implying he was first choice as the 'creative' signing and the amount of money spent on transfer fee and esp wages - that he would at least be at the fore front of Jose's mind when picturing his strongest side.

With Carrick, Blind, Morgan, Bastien, Ander, Fellaini and maybe Pogba competing for 2/ 3 positions you have to wonder whether Herrera is seen as a regular starter by the boss.

Obviously injuries and loss of form. could affect all that.

its the second post I've seen with martial ibra and miki start.
shap can see miki playing 10 and he can play there but he played all last year on the right, and i think that's where he has been bought for .

rash has come on twice both times as a 9, i think that's his best spot .

martial ibra miki and rooney as first choice but rash mata linders and depay will all push for a start.
i think ibra and rooney will be given a good chance to form a 2 but there might be a few surprises this year .

linders looked good last night martial seems in a dip.

04 Aug 2016 17:21:39
also don't forget di maria .
everyone has gone on and on about players picked on form .
we have a good attacking united most will get a chance they just have to take it.

04 Aug 2016 17:34:22
Not sure what you're referring to with regards '2nd post' but regardless I agree with you on most grounds. I think Jose would currently see Martial (left), Mickey (right), Ibra and Rooney as our strongest front 4. can't see him starting the season with Mickey as no. 10 and Rooney on the bench.

No doubt things will be rotated with form and injuries. For me, the most interesting think will be to see how he uses the likes of Rash, Depay, Lingard and Mata - what positions will he use them in and which will get the more frequent opportunities.

I only hope Rashford gets plenty of games and personally don't mind seeing him on either the left or right as well as through the middle, at this stage of his career. He's good in all positions and first team experience will be beneficial for his development.

Over to you, Jose.

thats my point mik could be either so hard to say he he plays, to be honest i'm not sure how you can say martial ibra and mik start .
we have a good options this year and its a long season.
