It was good to see Fergie's quotes about what a superstar Wayne Rooney has been for United over the past 12 years. Just goes to show there is no bitterness from either party in regards to the few altercations they had over the years.

It was also good to see that Jose says that Wayne will still be very important in the years to come. I can't wait until he smashes Bobby's record as he deserves it in tenfolds. Rooneys record will then be untouchable for a long time the way players move clubs for a better pay packet these days.

12 years later and he is still in Uniteds top best 3 players for me.

Agree7 Disagree9

Spot on.

03 Aug 2016 09:42:57
Agree with rest of the stuff, but not 1 of the best 3 players anymore. On performance, carrick martial rashford smalling and ddg were better than rooney last season. On ability zlatan, mkhitaryan, martial, ddg and (if signed) pogba are better than rooney.

03 Aug 2016 09:46:45
Totally agree Maze. I am gutted for him that the testimonial isn't a sell out, he deserves every seat to be taken. He's won everything there is to win for the club. He's 9th on the all time appearance list and will likely be 6th by the end of this season. He's 2nd all time top goalscorer and will most definitely become our all time top goalscorer before Christmas. All this and still people don't recognise how important he is to the club.

03 Aug 2016 10:21:44
I am by no means 1 of Rooneys "haters" on here and fully appreciate what he has done over the last 12 years, but to say he is still in the top 3 best players in our current squad is ludicrous, DDG, Martial, Rashford, Smalling, Carrick I'd even go as far as Blind all preformed better last season add Zlatan, Tricky Micky and possibly Pogba to that list puts him further down that pecking order.

I do think Rooney has a lot to offer however think he will be seeing the bench a lot this season.

03 Aug 2016 10:29:46
Utter nonsense. Top 10? How about Best, Charlton, Law, Edwards, or more recently, Gggs, Scholes, Neville, Keane, Ronaldo, or even when we were pants, Robson. ROoney that's bee a good and sometimes great player for us but he's not in the top 10.

As for testimonials I have a real problem here. Good on the players for raising money for charity eh? But they're actually raising it by fans paying out. Wayne is looking to raise about £5M for charity and its commendable he isn't simply pocketing the cash but how about he matches whatever is raised out of his own pocket? I'm sure I'll get shot down but at the very top level how much money is enough? My guess is that with salary, bonuses, endorsements, sponsorship, top players like Wayne are pulling something like £15M to £20M a year. Idealistic perhaps but too many players simply don't get it.

03 Aug 2016 10:31:57
Not to be cynical, but I can't imagine SAF saying anything negative about an active member of the squad, particularly just before his "testimonial".

03 Aug 2016 10:48:15
I agree with the idea of Rooney matching whatever is raised for charity. If fact he should put in a clause that should the amount is short of £10m he will top up to that amount. That will show how magnanimous he is. Afterall I am sure it will be tax deductible.

03 Aug 2016 11:04:54
Btw I don't hate Rooney. Just think if you want to help charity go the way. And Rooney being a nice guy I won't be surprised if he did.

03 Aug 2016 11:05:14
CSM I would say on ability he is just as good if not been better than Zlatan over the years. As for Miki what has he done to be considered more gifted than Wayne? Last season the whole team except De Gea and Martial were bang average close to awful so to rate him entirely on that is ludicrous.

Tony all those players you listed were great in thier own way as is Rooney. In my opinion he is up there with the lot of them on some level and has the stats and medals to back that up. Folk will miss Rooney when he is gone as much as folk miss those you mention.

03 Aug 2016 11:40:39
Maze which is why i rated him on last season as well as current ability, other than u and maybe jred i don't think we will find anyone who will say rooney at his current stage is as good as mkhitaryan, zlatan scored 50 goals last season, rooney hasn't reached 20 in a long while, though to be fair to him he was payed in the mf in the last season, but my point still stands, on current ability very few if any will pick rooney ahead of zlatan. And about other players being average, even among those average players carrick, rashford, smalling outperformed him. Also on pure ability even at his best rooney won't be in top 3 of utd all time greats.

03 Aug 2016 11:43:04
I won't miss the constant Rooney debates.

03 Aug 2016 11:56:22
CSM Miki has done well at Dortmund but until he proves it in the CL or consistently the way Rooney has done at United I would consider him to have more ability than Wayne at the moment.

As for Zlatan wasn't he playing with a group of superstars in one horses league last season? How many goals would he have scored under LVG last season? I don't think Carrick, Rashford or Smalling out performed him last season. Smalling was lucky as LVG player 10 defenders.

03 Aug 2016 12:07:20
So the record goalscorer (its going to happen) of the club doesn't deserve to be in the top 10 best players to have ever played for a club?
I'm not saying build a statue for him. But he has given it his all whenever he played. He's played at st lw cm no.10 and is still probably going to break the goalscoring record.
Berba, rvp, chicha, welbs etc have come and gone but he's the only one still here.

03 Aug 2016 12:16:57
Well said riddlet026.

03 Aug 2016 12:19:32
what has proving it in cl got to do with current ability, bcz rooney for sure did not prove anything in cl last season or maybe we would have got out the group stage last season, and again we or atleast i am talking about current level not how good rooney was at his peak or rooney's contribution to man utd, just about pure and simple ability at this point of time, wherein mkhitaryan is a better no 10 than rooney. Rooney has not exactly been scoring tons of goals recently, be it fergie's last season or moyes's disaster or van gaal's 2 seasons. And zlatan scored 5 goals in cl last season in 10 games or is that a one horse cup too.

03 Aug 2016 12:28:41
riddlet026 just bcz he will be a top goal scorer does not necessarily mean he will be top 10 player to ever play for the club, we are a historically big club with lots of worldclass players. I hope u remember his agent threatening to do a tevez and sign for city if his wage demand wasn't met, he is here bcz dear moyesy put him on so high wages that none could actually afford him even if we tried to sell.

03 Aug 2016 12:46:37
He deserves to break the record he will go down as a club legend.
He is well past his best. Not been playing very well for 3 seasons. Always tries his best on the pitch.
Imo we should have sold him 3 seasons ago but we never did.
Not in my top ten of all time but would be in my top 20.
That said at this time he would not be in my starting 11 anymore but that's not to say hee has Not been a great player and servant to the club.

03 Aug 2016 13:00:29
You are just hating on Rooney because you dislike him your facts and figures are a poor reflection on your poor argument.

03 Aug 2016 13:02:00
If he was so greedy about money, he would have gone to china this year where he got an offer of 600k/ w.
If he wanted to win trophies elsewhere when we were going downhill, he would have gone to Chelsea when jose wanted him there.
Common sense moyes if his agent said that it's because its the agents job to get the max salary.
Raiola isn't the best of agents when it comes to keeping relations. I don't think that has any reflection on the player.

03 Aug 2016 13:04:56
It's a good debate this one and I'm not dissing Rooney, he has done some remarkable things. However, stats on their own can be misleading. Robson won very little for us but was a colossus during his time at United. Rooney deserves his place in our history but not top 10 for me, even judging purely on playing ability and contribution to the team. In my view, Cantona had a bigger impact on our team. And club than Rooney. That may sound odd as he was with us for so few years and did little on the Euroan stage but he took us to the level of winners, before he arrives we were continuing to stutter along. Maze, I respect your view but I will remember others more fondly.

03 Aug 2016 13:06:53
Rooney has scored more goals than any other United play bar Charlton, some of which have been absolute screamers. He has player in a number of different roles, captained the club and been a part of the most successful era in the Clubs history.
No one forgets the contract saga's, but other players have done likewise - Keane anyone?

I think he's given the fans more good memories than bad, belongs to be considered in the company of the likes of Best, Charlton, and other greats.

03 Aug 2016 13:53:18
I think he is a utd great but not top 3 never top 3. In current team be it ability wise or performance wise he is isn't top 3 either, neither his performances or his stats show us rooney performing well, but as u say it is a poor argument so please go ahead make a good one. Rooney isn't the best striker in the team nor the best no 10 nor the best mf, yet he is the highest paid player, yes he gives it his all and one thing one can't complain about rooney is his effort, but to me most of this he gives it his all is just a polite way of saying he runs around a lot like a headless chicken, not knowing and not have the positional disciple to stay in his position wherein he can be a lot more useful to his team than running around a lot leaving us many a times without a striker or without a forward player who can pass to the striker.

03 Aug 2016 14:50:24
Ajh cantonas inpact was more felt because he was at utd during his best years of playing football.
Zlatan might absolutely boss this season and not be here come next season. But to say he would he above berbatov or chicharito in terms of service to the club is rather misleading.

03 Aug 2016 14:56:10
Come on lads. Cheer up. At least MAZE has said something positive about someone. Time to celebrate.

03 Aug 2016 15:49:07
I can't believe people are being even a tiny bit negative about Rooney, football fans have short memories as they say.
Every club in the Premier League over the last 10 years would have loved to sign Rooney. He's been a superstar for us and not just in patches. Fa Cup winner, Champs league winner, all round top superb servant to our club. He has inspired many other players for both Utd and England. If there was a new Wayne Rooney coming thru the ranks right now he'd be costing you British records to sign and we'd pay it all over again.
Thanks for choosing us Wayne, I've loved watching your career blossom. Top player.

03 Aug 2016 17:16:53
raises 5 million pound for charity and still gets slagged off?

03 Aug 2016 17:39:19
not his money is it jred, as AJH put it if he was actually contributing something from his own pocket then fair enough but here he is just taking it from the fans.

03 Aug 2016 18:21:46
common
how do you know his not .
he is actually raising money for his foundation .
what did you think of giggs or scholes testimonal.

5 mil for charity is 5 mil .
he isn't taking any thing from the fans, he has set up a charity event to raise money and you still not happy .
how much have you give?

did you want to rip bob geldof a new one for band aid .

people are slagging some one off for setting up a foundation and raising money for charity.

moyes it really says a lot about your attitude towards rooney.

03 Aug 2016 18:29:29
Giving the money to charity is a good thing no doubt about it.
Ian botham was lauded for his charity raising feats most of which were public donations.
Can't knock him for the gesture in anyway.

03 Aug 2016 19:55:08
I'm with Maze on this one.
