I read an interesting point a couple of days ago, that Jose may have made Rooney club Captain but not necessarily Team Captain. This doesn't give Rooney first choice in the team. If this has been clarified already then fair enough apologies for bringing it up, yet I don't see Rooney as undroppable any more.

If it needs a new team Captain, if indeed that was the case, worryingly there are few options and perhaps DDG would be the best bet. Thoughts?

I thought i read rooney had been confirmed as captain
Ddg would be a poor captain imo good gk but what makes you think he would be a good cap.

I have read reports Rooney is club captain but we can't put him in the team based on the option he is the only option as captain. The question is open but outside DDG who else is captain material that merits a definite place in the team?

“I am quite surprised with so many question marks around this guy, ” Mourinho said ahead of United’s International Champions Cup game against Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai this lunchtime. “He is the club captain, he is the manager’s captain, he is the players’ captain.

“I trust him a lot. I think he’s going to be a very important player for me and no problem for him. ”.

Mourinhos handled the rooney situation correctly and with minimal fuss. he's dismantled the theory that rooney could be a long term solution in central midfield.

Hes also kept him as captain which is right as he's our most experienced player and is a leader in the squad. But he's stopped short of assuring him of a guaranteed starting spot unlike lvg did with his ''captain privileges' nonsense.

Not a ball kicked in anger and the debate whether Rooney is shit or not kicks off 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴.

He's your SCOUSE Club Captain. You were all made up to sign him!

A captain means different things to different managers. LVG wanted his captain to be Mini-LVG (because he was bone idle and needed a likeable player to convince the squad the manager wasn't a tool), JM I imagine picks a captain just because you need to have a captain and expects all players to be professional and can articulate himself properly not needing a dopey scouser to translate for him.

Rooney is a good choice for captain so long as captaincy doesn't equal auto-start, which it won't now thank God. Ibra, Schweiny and maybe one or two others will be the real leaders on the pitch I believe. The best captains I played under all had a fear factor, a good intelligence and legitimate passion. Football was more than just a game to them, first over the wall types. The poor ones wanted to be everyone's mate, not the sharpest tools in the box and often enjoyed being captain because it meant they got to lift trophies and new more about team selection in advance (power trip) . I think Rooney falls into the later category, but DDG is not a wise choice for me and we do lack natural leaders.

Too much emphasis is placed on captains now, we can be excused as Utd fans because LVG built it up in an act of desperation. JM won't (I hope), so we can go back to treating captaincy with little importance in this modern age.

As Beast says and my point is that now his captaincy should not mean an automatic start, he must earn the position. Rashford may take a step forward from last season (he may not, of course) so I don't want to see him sat behind an automatic choice because of captaincy. Personally I don't believe Jose will box himself in like LvG did, if Rooney doesn't perform, he will be benched, as it should be. Whilst captaincy on a football field isn't as important as in cricket there is a need for a leader to take the armband. The players have changed so much in last couple of years and with uncertainty of selection the armband, if Rooney doesn't play, may just have to go to the best option.
