Well I have said it several times and have been shouted down, but the technical quality of English players just isn't good enough. Our understanding of the game is poor, our technical ability is poor and there for our performances are poor.

In any other country in the world a failure such as this would trigger a full scale review, followed up with an action plan on what went wrong and what can be done to correct it. But in England our arrogance/ ignorance will mean we will just blame the manager and bad luck and keep this ship going in the wrong direction.

Looking at our player last night after the final whistle no one can accuse them of not trying or not caring. But all the good intention in the world won't do you any good without the required knowledge and skills needed to compete at the highest level.

Our players showed last night that their technical ability and understanding is at best on par with a country that's entire population is smaller than Bristol or Manchester. The population of Glasgow or Leeds is more than double the population a Iceland. Birmingham's population is three times the size of Iceland's and London's is over 21 times that of Iceland's.

So imagine if we had to pick a team out of players who just come from Bristol and compete at the Euro's or World cup and that is the level Iceland is on.

For a country of our size and our financial power within football that just isn't good enough, it isn't even close to good enough.

I have said many times the issue is the standard of coaching through out the entire football pyramid but especially at grass roots. I read a statistic recently that said over 70% of players under the age of 16 have never been coached by someone with a coaching qualification in this country. I don't know how true that stat is but even if its somewhere in the ball park that is a horrific thought.

Every single player for us last night played more bad passes and had more poor first touches in one game than the teams that make the Semi's will have had all tournament.

We were painfully slow in moving the ball due to the level of technical ability, our players first touch is very poor and inconsistent, and they seem to struggle with weight of pass. These are very basic things, things that should be taught at a very young age and mastered long before they make their professional debut. But when the vast majority of our players have spent long periods of their youth football learning without a qualified coach then it really is quite understandable as to why they struggle with the basics.

I disagree.

Many of the greatest players haven't been put through academy systems until later on in their teens.

Kids should play football with eachother, admire the flair players and try and become like them. That is what has created the likes of Messi, playing with socks, tennis balls - whatever could be kicked. Not being coached on technique.

These kids should then be picked up and introduced to academy's that don't tell them 'don't do that'. They should love the game and play with passion and freedom at a young age.

Having a coaching qualification does not mean you are a good coach - it doesn't mean you are any better than a parent who failed but had ability.

In my opinion less structure would be preferred to more. We jump on the likes of Stones who plays with freedom and imagination, when in reality, these are the better players.

No bite or aggression in midfield,

There was no bit of fight there at all.

28 Jun 2016 10:47:49
Im not English but haven't grasped why Stones hasn't played at centre back he is England's best technical centre back.

28 Jun 2016 11:47:39
Did you watch stones play this season? He was awful. I know smalling and Cahill weren't brilliant this tournament but stones is full of mistakes and still very rash.

Fresh, that is exactly the attitude that has got us in this mess.

There are over 400 professional footballers in the EPL, and nearly all of them have had professional coaching from a young age. There is always the odd exception such as Vardy or Smalling but how do these lads really hold up against the worlds best?

I agree that you don't have to have a qualification to be a good coach, but having a qualification means you have achieved at least a minimum level. It certainly won't make you a worse coach by going on a couple of courses and sitting a couple of exams. We don't let unqualified people be doctors, teachers or lawyers so why put the future of our national team in unqualified hands?

You named Messi, the lad had top coaching from a very young age, do you really think Barcelona would have been spending thousands of pounds on expensive growth treatment and not getting top guys to help fine tune his natural ability?

The biggest problem is overcoming this attitude towards education in football. Its not just a football issue in this country. Very few people would undertake a masters degree unless it was to gain a promotion or to unable them to change jobs. They see education as a tick box in order to get what they want rather than education for self improvement and to further their understanding.

It is this attitude that is holding back our ability to compete at the highest level, not just in sport but in all fields.

Sturridge isn't a winger. He should have been played in kanes position. Kane should never have started. Sterling should never have been in the squad on form. Rooney shouldn't have been in the squad nevermind started. Wilshere shouldn't have started or been in the squad. Performing and inform players should have been playing doesn't matter the name on the back of the shirt. Hart should have been dropped, cylne should have been starting, henderson should have started.
The squad, the first 11, the system, players playing in wrong positions, England were an embarrasment because of woy. He's a terrible manager completely out of his depth.
Yes England needs better coaching from every level but there were English players there capable of doing a lot better.
If England are to do anything in the next worldcup the squad needs a complete clean out of big nameS. Play players that are in form, have the fight and have a manager with the balls to do iT. Gareth Southgate isn't going to do it.

28 Jun 2016 12:47:46
Neither sturridge or kane should of started imo.

The midfield was awful but there wasn't a great deal on the bench to improve it either.

We needed our fullbacks to play well but frankly they were beyond atrocious.

Big al we could of played anybody last night and they would of still lost no heart no passion clueless.

Sturridge should have started and in his correct position, centrally not stuck out on the wing. Your argument for him not starting? he's England's best forward 👍 he tried to run at the opposition and open up the play . a lot more than the rest of that shambles . Ali and dier were woeful . Rooney offered nothing much like he has for 5 years now .
Daz I disagree . didn't rashford come on and show ability and offered something? Play a few kids if they are atleast going to show something on the pitch .

28 Jun 2016 15:17:03
Who says he's England's best striker? Not me mate, I wouldn't of took him let alone started him.

I agree. I am not expert but always interested in listening to people who know more about the game. I was catching redeye from water and ended up running into selgado, who had just done the spain vs craotia game as a pundit and we had a few hours to burn and talked about a multitude of things as my son plays with his son on the same team.

I dd post this earlier and it al stemmed from me asking him what was the big difference between the pl and spain. He said once you get used to the pace of the game it is no issue as the technical ability required to play it is at a lower level than spain or italy. He also said that tactically it is no where near the level of those leagues and its mrs about being physical than anything else.

I guess 25 years ago when you could kick lumps out of players that style of football was effective, in todays day an age that has now gone. He also said something else that was interesting about England and the pl that the best players are all foreign players for the top teams and that it s not the case in it lay or spain. i questioned him on that and don't necessarily agree with him.

His final statement that kind of stuck was that in england it is a rarity for teams to tactically control games and its all helper skelter and ping pong back and forth and that is why you see england struggle at major tournaments.

28 Jun 2016 19:42:16
Shahram, this mirrors what I have heard from more than a couple of professionals.

I think he is right about the top teams best players being foreign. With the exception of Spurs maybe with Kane, but then Lloris, Alderwield, Verthogen and Dembele are probably their next most important players. Although they do have probably the best of the british players with Walker, Rose, Dier and Alli also pretty key players. But then are Spurs a top team or have they just crashed the party?
