Carrick signs new one year contract and I for one am happy.

Same here. No he should not start week in week out. However, he's one of the few experienced players left in our squad, very professional, and currently there is nobody better than him at controlling the tempo of the game.

Disappointing if true. Carrick offers next to nothing these days and will end up taking game time away from younger, better players who have a future at the club.

Redseven, those same younger players, will be be as inconsistent as hell, and rightfully so at their age. We need some experience in there. I remember us getting rid of Rio, Vidic and Evra in one go, and that didn't work out too well, mate. Most fellow pro's will tell you how how much Carrick's contribution is valued, even if it goes largely unseen.

Keep him yes just to give the younger lads advice far to slow now best as acoach.

Noucamp - Whilst I agree to some degree with what you're saying; Carrick has not had a good season. His age has caught up with him and next season he will be another year older and another yard slower.

His mobility, or lack of it, is a huge liability and opposition players have worked out that if you put pressure on him when on the ball he will make mistakes. He seems to be allergenic to forward passes these days. Last season he managed no goals or assists in 44 appearances and made several errors which lead to goal scoring opportunities.

Given that we have TFM, Morgan, Ander, Bastian, Fellaini and Rooney in midfield and seem to be looking to bring in at least another midfielder - I really don't see the point in keeping him providing we bring in one or two players with experience rather than potential.

He has been a fantastic servant to our club but has nothing left to offer on the pitch. I'd rather he be offered a coaching role.

A note of caution. The return of Scholes seemingly contributed to Pogba leaving Utd because he didn't get the game time he thought he deserved. It be a mistake (and probably a costly one) if an extension to Carrick's contract had a similar result for the present crop of youngsters. None the less, Carrick has made an outstanding contribution to the midfield for many years and deserves all the praise heaped on him

Excellent point Red Setter! I had forgotten about that.

Carrick offers so much on the pitch and off it. In the 16 starts he had this season past, we won 12, drew 3, and lost 1. His intuitive sense is just getting better and better, he was never mobile and he rarely got into the opposition box, but if fit he would be the first name on my team list if we played a midfield 3. Unless, we signed another first team ready deeper lying playmaker.

I'd rather big money be spent on a CB partner for Smalling, and a right sided left footed attacker. Woodie just needs to camp out with team France at the Euros and remind Varane and Griezmann why they grew up loving United.

Even if we managed to bring Saul to Old Trafford, I'd still want Carrick in that role. Carrick, Rooney and Saul behind Martial, Rashford and Griezmann would be pretty sweet. Though, I just read Griezmann isn't looking to leave the Vicente Calderon this Summer, oh well.

Jose needs the dressing room, he needs Carrick. Carrick is apparently a fantastic pro and a decent bloke exactly the type of guy you want your younger players trying to aspire to. There will be a lot of ins and outs this summer, keeping Carrick offers some stability to the players.

I thought he would keep one of either Carrick or Rooney, it will be interesting to see how Jose uses Rooney.

Sorry, mooseman; but I can't take you seriously when your stats are so clearly wrong.

Carrick started 22 league games and 35 games overall this season (no idea where you plucked 16 from) . I can't be bothered to go through and check every game that he started to get w/ d/ l figures - but at a glance I see that he started in the league losses against Arsenal, Bournemouth, Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom and Spurs; so I think it's safe to say that your assertion that he only started one game that we lost is some way off the mark.

TFM is a kid and we don't k ow his best position yet.

Morgan an Herrera have both been inconsistent.

Bastian is injury prone.

Rooney isn't a midfielder.

Fellaini will be out the door sharpish.

And do people really still believe pogba left because of game time.

31 May 2016 20:27:38
Fair point Red Seven, don't ever use ESPN as precedent for anything! I'm pretty sure I remember watching him in two league losses myself. the fallacy of man.

Anyhow, the point stands - he still offers a great deal, the extra year isn't sentiment, its based of reason. To suggest he offers nothing, is even more criminal than throwing erroneous stats about, that overinflated his value! hahaha

More to the point, if he doesn't perform he won't prevent anyone from playing but himself. If he performs then why complain? I would love to see TFM play in midfield or at least in a central role as a defender.
