Classy statement from lvg, would like to thank him for what he's done over the last two years, yes it wasn't the prettiest at times but I think he has handled himself really well despite the best efforts of the abhorrent media and some "fans".
Thanks for setting a platform and for giving us our 12th FA cup, and I hope you have a peaceful retirement, God knows you need it.

{Ed025's Note - to be honest andy the press slaughtered him from the start, decent man who never really stood a chance mate..

Agree5 Disagree1

I feel very sorry for him. He has been hounded. Okay maybe not the best fit for us but still a very successful manager in his own right. First cup since fergie left!

I'm glad it didn't all 'end in tears' as many suggested it would on here.

23 May 2016 20:54:21
Agreed Red andy 94, very dignified statement, obviously put a bit of thought into it - thanked everyone from the laundry room right up to special thanks to SAF and Sir Bobby.

Not an easy man to get along with i'm sure but I never saw anything but genuine affection between him and the fans in plenty of you tube clips etc etc he always had a word and a smile, I think he genuinely liked England and the PL .

Good luck to him, it was right he went now with an FA Cup and I wish him well and hope to see him back at OT one day to see a game and get a good reception -.

Is it just the British media, though, Ed? When you see in Spain, acres of coverage every day on Barcelona and Real, yet the attention always seems a shock to managers coming here. Is it just a different kind of attention - more personal or intrusive, perhaps?

I think LVG wasn't helped by his lack of English - he came across a bit like the guy who managed Spurs - Gross. Lacking understanding of the nuances of the language made him come across badly, when he was trying to be funny sometimes.

I'd like to think he'd get a decent reception if he ever returns. I never wanted him here from the start, and said so. Though I hoped he'd succeed, and backed him to do so. The football he served up may have been anaethma to me and others, but I don't doubt he was trying to do right for the club, and he did get that elusive first trophy since Fergie left.

{Ed025's Note - thats fair comment noucamp, it seemed as an outsider though as if the press disliked him from the start and a lot of supporters jumped on that bandwagon, i have never been a fan of his to be honest mate but still feel the fans in particular could have treated him with a bit more class and dignity befitting a club of your stature..

23 May 2016 21:43:37
The attention was hightened by the fact that it was United he was managing. The press have loved every minute of our troubles, and have done their best to manufacture as much of them as they can. For United the media circus = £s, but not qualifying for the ECL comes at an unaffordable price. Mourinho will once again draw plenty of attention to the club, win or lose, and for a business that now brings in more from commercial activities than gate and TV revenues combined, that's of fundamental importance.

23 May 2016 21:43:45
To be honest I got the impression that most of the media and the fans were behind him from the start and stuck to it for a long time. He has just exceeded expectation at the world cup, some marquee signings and it was all really positive everywhere.

It was only the painful 5-3-2 that started to sway the minority of fans and some media thinking maybe this guy is out of touch - but it was the vast majority (Scholes was getting slated this season for saying stuff) . Then he started coming out with some ridiculous comments about us being the better team when we weren't. Then he started messing with the players with half of the team out of their natural position and the 3 months had come and gone with us looking more bewildered than ever. Star players looking shadows of their former selves etc.

Then realisation set in that we were boring and this WAS the style he wanted Utd to play. That's when most turned on him and it took a while longer than it should have because of the Moyes debacle.

He had an easy ride from most fans up until Xmas time, considering it has been just as bad for 2 years with no real progress I think he was very lucky to get the second year and for no change to be made at Xmas was just shocking to many. Even die hard positives like GDS2 turned on him.

It only seems harsh now because he won the FA Cup and its not nice to see anyone leave their job - but he needed to go and he can be grateful that the club let him stay on to win the Cup and save some face, as far as I'm concerned we missed out on CL football because of LVG and the weak board.

23 May 2016 22:07:53
That was a classy statement from LVG more class than he was treated especially by some of the fans. In this day and age Fergie would never have stood a chance and look what would have missed out on.

23 May 2016 22:20:06
I think most wanted him gone but our own fans to boo him lifting the fa cup i can see why ed calls them toxic.

23 May 2016 23:07:21
Got to disagree with a lot of the above.

Whilst the manner in which his departure was announced left a sour taste - I can't say I feel too sorry for the man.

Somebody at the club obviously wanted to dig the knife in by leaking the news at the time they did and the media were all too happy to help twist the knife.

His attitude towards the press has been poor since his arrival and I am not at all surprised to see them treating him the way they have. He's made no effort whatsoever to endear himself to the press/ public. If anything - he has done the opposite with his sheer arrogance and inability to take the blame for any of his mistakes.

The statement, which some have labeled classy, is indicative of his time at the club. "I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success" would suggest that we are in a better position now than we were when he arrived - but I really don't think that's the case.

Our squad is incredibly thin and a number of players still need to be moved on and replaced in the summer. When he came in we needed 4 or 5 top players to come in and he leaves us in the exact same position.

It could have been handled better by the club - but ultimately he was sacked for doing a poor job and kept on a lot longer than he should have been. He's 'earned' around £12m during his time with the club and will walk away with another £5m or £6m - all for doing a terrible job.

In many ways I don't blame him for his poor performance as I think that he was never the right man for the job and should not have been hired - but I do not pity him for earning more than many men will earn in a lifetime for two years of mediocrity.

23 May 2016 23:21:44
Well said redseven, I pretty much agree with all of that.

23 May 2016 21:26:17
Very interesting quotes saying the foundation has been put in place for future success. So if we win anything in the next 5 years van gaal can claim responsibility for it but if we perform poorly its all the new managers fault

Also saying he looks forward to the youth developing further next season given that Jose is taking over and is accused of not developing youth players seems to be setting him up. Since LVG said none of the youth were good enough for the first team its a bit of a change of tune.

Same old Louis, if it goes well it was because of him, if it goes wrong it was someone else's fault.

23 May 2016 23:46:48
Bit like our new manager, then, Mulam :)

24 May 2016 00:08:02
I take it above with the disagrees the 16 to 25 year olds disagree.

23 May 2016 21:49:27
Ed025

He brought it onto himself by the way he was confrontational with the press. The british press can be brutal if you take them on and you better deliver to keep them quite. Fergie did that but he was a serial winner so they were petrified of him.

The fan base are really simple people when you think about it, after our expenditure no one dreamt of us struggling like we did this year and to make things worse the football was terrible watching. He then made things worse with his various statements that infuriated the fan base.

Is it a surprise that the fans revolted or would fans of any club other our size act differently. I mean his win ratio is lower than Moyes, so why the post Mortem. He just did not deliver the bare minimum in a year where Chelsea and Liverpool were not even a factor and city was utter sh. t too with a lame Duck manager.

He really left the club with no choice and I dread to think what next year would have been like with a lame duck manager who everyone knew is in his last year.

BTW It will be no different for Mourinho and he will win the fans over by our style of football and results ro he will also be gone.

{Ed025's Note - it just got a bit personal for me x files, getting 5th and winning the fa cup in what was always going to be a transitional season is a decent return, but the demand for instant success these days and the need to find a scapegoat meant LVG got roasted, some of the players need to look in the mirror as well mate..

23 May 2016 21:50:07
Sign of the times, Ed.

Everything is personal nowadays. It's not enough to criticise the way a manager works, their tactics, or their vision for the future. We have to mock them and belittle them. Try and make knowledgeable and experienced men look like bumbling amateurs. Since Graham Taylor and the 'Turnip', through to McClaren and 'The Wally with the Brolly', we seem to take great delight in making caricatures of guys, who by and large, are decent men trying to do an impossible job.

Like I said, I disagree with nearly everything LVG represents in football. I believe his tactics, and that dreaded, 'philosophy', to be woefully outdated. But I don't doubt for a minute his desire to make Utd successful again, and I think he has handled the whole thing pretty classily. Unlike the guys above him, and the media.

{Ed025's Note - sign of the times indeed noucamp..sadly mate..

23 May 2016 23:04:16
Ed025, I sent a reply to you ages ago, mate, but it hasn't appeared. It's too long to waste my time writing it out again, just because you people can't do your job properly :)

{Ed025's Note - it was left for me noucamp but i had fallen asleep...nothing to do with your post though mate.. :)

24 May 2016 08:13:31
Ed025

I do agree with some of the players under performing, I guess we will find out if it the players or his philosophy and the approach of how the game should be played.

I think instant success is a bit harsh as we finished 4th last year, brought in 5 new players for a substantial sum and the expectations would have been to at least qualify for CL when you consider how Poor Chelsea and City have been and generally a poor league.

Losing 10 games, scoring 49 goals and losses to relegation teams such as Norwich, Sunderland and only managing 2 draws against Newcastle is never going to be accepted, transition or not as there are some bare minimums that comes with a club like United.

All this is irrelevant if the stories coming out are true about players unhappiness/ revolt and loss of belief . It looks like even a top 4 would not have been enough and the decision to change was made not based on our league placing but what was going on behind the scenes that sounds like it was major issue.

{Ed025's Note - im not advocating that he should have stayed x files, just that his treatment by the gutter press was abominable and a lot of supporters jumped on that hate bandwagon mate, he is a decent man and did not deserve that..

24 May 2016 08:18:38
Good man, Ed. Knew you wouldn't leave me hanging :)

{Ed025's Note - never mate..
