IF Jose signs and IF he sells Mata. again who would you want in the number 10 role?
I reckon Hakan Calhanoglu could fit the bill. Young, CL experience, free kick specialist (something we have lacked since Ronaldo)
Isco would be my other pick. Think he could shine given the 10 role, top player but overshadowed by Ronaldo Bale and James at Real. Think he will be one of the first names in the Spanish team for the next 5 years at least.

Consider we have Rooney, Fellaini, Pereira and Januzaj who all prefer the No.10 role. I expect Rooney would be given the role so I don't expect us to sign a No.10 at all. I expect we would sign a creative deeper midfielder someone like Kroos could well be on the cards. Andre Gomes is being looked at apparently. Personally I like Pjanic.

I think pereira. I would want pereira to play ahead of mata even now. He is such a good player. Left foot, right foot, he's more hard tackling than mata and he can hop past a challenge easily.

Apologies beforehand for the rant but i am tired and fed up of the number 10 position. Mata fellaini rooney, janujaz, herrera etc who have played that position haven't done much.
The number 10 position is just a convenient excuse for an unproductive attacker to get in the team and not have any defensive responsibilities. The same goes for the deep lying playmaker who doesn't put a tackle in.
I would ironically like to see us adopt lvgs favourite system of 4-3-3 which would consist of one defensive midfielder who breaks up play and two box to box midfielders who also take their fair share of defensive responsibilites.
This would leave the 3 attackers up front to take on the burden of providing most of our attacking output.

Sadly I think Rooney will play there. Fellaini is only a number 10 for a Big Sam team, Januzaj apparently has some attitude problems and for some reason Pereira doesn't seem to be able to get near the first team. Maybe LVG doesn't like him, maybe they see weaknesses in training that we don't.
If we don't sign a new 10 I'd rather keep Mata and have Pereira and Januzaj as back up. Perhaps Jose could get Rooney performing but I think his decline is irreversible.

Hmmm DSG that's an interesting perspetive. I think that in LVG's system where we have a lot of possession but don't make forward runs and tend to keep the ball around the halfway line rather than the edge of the opponents box you may well be right. Having a player like Kroos sitting deeper and picking out players with long diagonal balls would probably work better. Martial and Rashford could use their pace to get onto balls behind the defence.
I think in a team that presses higher up the pitch, dominates possession but keeps the ball in the final third a number 10 type player is more valuable as they can play sharp through balls into the box or shoot from just outside it. With the play compacted in only one third of the pitch it is more difficult for a quarter back type player like kroos or pirlo to pick out players in space or to play long balls behind a deep defence.
I guess it just depends what our style of play will be next year.
