Hypothetical, if Jose was to arrive, who in the current squad do you think he'd like? He likes to build a squad on a solid defence. I don't think Smalling or Blind are his type of ideal defender.
He likes at least one holding midfielder and one that covers a lot of ground. Morgan and Herrera (even though I think Herrera isn't quite good enough) Jose might like them. Mata you'd think would go. He likes his wingers to offer help defending so Januzaj and Memphis would have to up their game. I think he'd relish getting his hands on Martial, Rashford, Fosu-Mensa, Varela and Shaw.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hazard wasn't a defending winger but Jose got the best out him. Jones young carrick fellaini lingard maybe mata will be out (he did well under mourinho)
Players I think he'll like
Martial mensah ddg if he stays shaw and Memphis.

13 Apr 2016 01:18:14
I think his biggest priority will be a commanding CB, one who can really lead the back line. I also think he will want a bigger, more imposing center forward, someone who can hold the ball up easier. I think the #10 position is hard to predict ahead of time. I think he will surely like Schneiderlin, Martial, Fosu-Mensah, Shaw, and DDG of course. And a lot of the players who have struggled may do much better with a fresh start.

Smalling will not be going anywhere and one of the best defenders in the league. Harry kane did not get a kick against him the other day. i think schweinsteiger, mata, memphis, Fallaini, janusaj, young and carrick will be gone or not renewed if they are in their last year.

{Ed001's Note - hahaha Smalling one of the best defenders in the league??? That really made my day, thanks mate. Brilliant.}

13 Apr 2016 07:36:38
Yeah Jose got the best out him until this season,

13 Apr 2016 07:37:36
Smalling has far to many bad days to be a good defender imo.

On Sunday 2 goals were his fault and that's not the first time it's happened.

We need better I think.

13 Apr 2016 07:40:48
Why would Jose relish the chance to get his hands on rash ford martial etc because he always Chelsea youth players.

13 Apr 2016 08:37:24
Right Ed01, I will give Smalling is not top drawer but not sure any thinks he is. However he has played well at times this season and has been an aggressive leader type centre half at times. I'm not saying he's in the Hansen (how long ago! ), Ferdinand and Vidic mode however when playing along side a midget who can't win headers or run i think he's not done to bad a job.
Before you throw out the "2 defensive midfielders protecting him line" i get that too however we are not the only team to do that. I do believe if he had a quality cb along side him, he can certainly do a job for us.
Just as a side note who is currently better than him in our league Kompany aside? The 2 Leicester lads have performed well however they have a defensive set up and Kante in front of them who is very good at protecting them. In fact the whole Leicester teams works very hard for each other and helps win it back when they don't have it.
I'm not saying he's the best in the league here but there's no world class defender in this league apart from an unfit Kompany.

{Ed001's Note - the two Belgians at Spurs are light years ahead of Smalling.}

13 Apr 2016 08:52:46
Thoughts on Varane? Jose had him in his starting 11 at RM, plus there was rumours jose wanted him at cfc too.

He maybe not the "ready made" cb but I'm sure he'll be a lot better than Jones and Rojo.

13 Apr 2016 09:14:16
Ed01 Light years ahead? If I've told you once I've told you a million times don't exaggerate!
Not really seen enough of them to say really apart from Sunday when i could have defended in Spurs back 4 against us!

CTR
No sure how you get Smalling at fault for 2 goals on Sunday. I'm assuming you are not blaming him for Rojo's embarrassing attempt to defend for the 2nd!?

So that leaves the 1st and 3rd.
1st goal:
Maybe at fault for not leaving the header to Blind and running into him but maybe there was no call from Blind or he couldn't believe Blind was actually going to head it and thought he better help him out! After that bit, which happened near the half way line, Blind does not get back in and marks no one and Darmain does nothing to stop the cross or get tight to his man.

2nd Goal:
He's marking Harry Keane, as he did most of the match and when Lamella scores its Blind who 5 yards of him trying to stop the shot the shot.

Just not sure how we can blame Smalling for 2 goals. Having a centre midfielder along side him who can't run and can't head it is certainly not helping him.

{Ed001's Note - the Spurs pair are an excellent combination, they work brilliantly together. You have to be good when your fullbacks are Rose, Davies, Trippier and Walker and you still don't concede many.....}

13 Apr 2016 09:36:06
Yeah fair point about the full backs for Spurs they love to bomb on get forward which can leave gaps in behind. Theoretically though that's what your 2 holding mids are there for to cover when they go forward.
Fosu-Mensah played as cb in the 1st half protecting Blind because he's slow and Rojo did't venture far foward either. I know smalling is certainly lacking but just thinking he'd be ok along side a quality centre half who knows what they are doing. A bit like City look with Kompany back and how we looked when we alternated with Vidic and Ferdinand in Fergies last year.
The ironic thing is about this United team under Van Gaal he's trying to make us hard to beat and plays very defence minded football and we still lose 3 nil!

{Ed001's Note - they play one holding mid. Dembele has a free role to get forward when he wishes, Dier is the only holder, he drops in when one of the centre halves gets dragged out wide to cover the fullbacks. Their excellence, the centre backs I mean, is partially due to their comfort in being drawn out into wide areas, with both being able to play at full back. Most centre halves hate being dragged out wide, such as the Leicester pair, and so will happily leave gaps out wide, which forces the team to keep the full backs deeper.}

I think there are many misconceptions about Mourinho, like he is super defensive and hates flair players. He got the best out of Hazard after all and his Madrid side are still the highest ever scorers in La Liga.

I think out of the whole squad (excluding young players), Darmian, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Rooney and Martial would all be seen as fine by Mourinho. Smalling would become a backup, Blind as a utility man if not sold, Mata is not strong or quick enough. Lingard is one dimensional and not good enough to start, Carrick is past it. I think he would quite like Schweinsteiger - he has got the best out of a few 'oldies' in his time.

He I am sure would be looking at two new centre backs (Stones, Manolas), a midfielder (Sanches/ Kroos), a right sided attacker (Rodriguez) and probably a striker (Ibrahimovic, Kane) .

All those plans cost money, and the amount of money we have will be the deciding factor.

Only football i watch now is United really due to the wife moaning when i put it on! She knows better than to moan when United are on though thankfully!
I saw them 1st game of the season and thought United were slightly lucky to win that 1 nil.
Dembele: I remember wanting him when he left Fulham. We wouldn't pay wes sneijders wages and Fergie told everyone Cleverly was the next best english cen mid. What a joke. Said at the time why not sign him. Think he went for something like 7 million in the end.
Most people could see Cleverley wasn't up being a United midfielder. I would put Lingard in the same catergory right now too and wouldn't be surprised to see his career follow a similar path. I suppose they have to be given a chance though even if in some cases they don't quite do enough to stay at the club.

{Ed001's Note - I really like Dembele, he gets involved defensively and in the build up, just lacks goalscoring. He really should score a lot more goals than he does.}

13 Apr 2016 10:19:42
He should score more you are right. He's got quick feet and can beat people and he's quick across the ground. Solid in the tackle and works hard just lacks goals.

On a side note what do you reckon for your boys tomorrow night. After the 1st leg (which i saw bits of) I'm sure you must be feeling pretty confident? I thought you would lose to Dourtmund and City would lose to PSG (wishful thinking! ) but after last night and your 1st leg i think you will go through. I'll stop short of wishing you good luck though and i know you'd know i didn't mean it anyway!

I'm not really sure any of our players fall into the 'Jose type of player' category.

I think he would be keen to sign a strong, powerful striker (Signing Drogba and Costa was one of the first things he did on both of his Chelski stints) . Neither Rooney or Martial fit in to that role so I can see him going for a Zlatan or Benzema.

He likes to play with a strong hardworking holding player (Makelele/ Khedira/ Matic) and again - we don't really have one of those either. Can see him moving for a Kante or Carvalho type.

Jose has always expected his wingers to put in a shift defensively and none of our current lot of wingers do that. Depay may be given some time but I don't ever see him developing into the type of player Jose would like. Somebody like Willian is perfect for Jose's style of play but unfortunately there aren't many players like him around. God knows who he would go for.

His sides have always had decent CB pairings (Carvalho/ Terry, Pepe/ Ramos, Terry/ Cahill) so I expect he will be on the lookout for a decent partner for Smalling (in an ideal world I think he would replace Smalling too but will need to prioritise other areas) . He showed a lot of interest in Stones last summer and we seem to be going for young players so can see him moving for Stones. Probably wouldn't be my choice.

Players I think JM would like - Martial, Rooney, Schneiderlin, De Gea, Ander and, surprisingly, Fellaini (although I think he'll be forced to ship him out as the fans do not like him) .

Players JM would probably look to move on - Carrick, Mata, Januzaj, Rojo, Fellaini.

13 Apr 2016 16:07:30
The first goal was clearly smallings fault, the fact he could see everything in front of him and still chose to try and win the ball is amateur.

The 3Rd I think was again him at fault. He's a ball winning cb and should spot the decoy run from Kane and adjust his position accordingly. Both goals came from the right and he plays right side, is that a coincidence?
