"It's not nice to say certain things, but it's more that they didn't let me settle properly than I couldn't settle, " he told BBC. "I left and that team are still playing the same way. Out of the European competitions, far from being champions of the Premier League. "
"So I decided to leave, not only to be happy but to win things. I started a game in one position then the next game in another. I scored goals playing in one position, then suddenly the next game I was picked to play in a different position.

"I think this also didn't help me settle. It's up to the manager to decide where and how every player should play, but I think that the player should be comfortable in that position and adapt to it. "
"That is what I'm doing here at PSG and I'm very thankful to the coach for it. From the beginning he was clear where he wanted to play me and has never changed his mind, ” added Di Maria.

"He gave me total freedom to move where I needed to move. I'm very happy here and it wasn't the case over there. "
Di maria.

I thought he started great at united, looked good at madrid and psg.

Imagine what could have been this season if he was on the right hand side still for us.

Di Maria is a good player albeit overrated, but wasn't happy here at all. However, his failure he is partly down to the fact that LVG will not have individuals in his team. If you want to play, you have to play where he says and how he says regardless of any ideas you might have. If King Eric joined us know he'd flop under LVG's philosophy.

"He is one of the players who have no self-criticism. It is always the fault of the manager. Unfortunately it is always like that. "

Lvgs response in his press conference today. Two sides to every story and the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Lvg did mismanage his position in the team but di maria never looked like he wanted to be here either.

He did at the start.

He never looked like he wanted to be here? I thought he did earlier. He was loving it here before something else changed. Am still wondering why big talents are finding it difficult to thrive under LVG in recent times. What about schwensteiger, schneiderlin, Depay and even Rooney not to talk about those who have been sold.

Will LVG come out and admit the fault is his? Di Maria has gone now, what is happening with our current crop of players? To cap it all, is Depay also looking like he never wanted to be here?

I still think something needed to be done. Either LVG changes his method or we replace him. I still don't believe any of these players are/ were at fault.

I recall the Leicester game last season, DiMaria scored a brilliant goal and we were playing great football going 3.1 up. A terrible penalty was given and we surrendered. Instead of realising the frailty of the chosen defenders, Tyler Blackett being one, and sorting that area out, LVG looked at the verve and decided we needed more structure, reigning in DiMaria to play in a defined area. That I think was the turning point for DiMaria and our exciting play generally as a team.

In all this I am not convinced DiMaria wanted to be at United from the start, yet we should have looked at the coach and decided whether he wanted a free style player or a typically Dutch organised one. Blame on both sides, DiMaria for coming in the first place and the club on the other, one for buying him and the other for the club's coach change of style.

Great talent, just never felt right to me. Good luck to him elsewhere playing in a semi pro league with 3-4 hard games in a season.

Eric
Good point, even zlatan at 35 looks good in that league.

02 Apr 2016 10:37:07
Jred,

To be fair zlatan looks good against whoever they play, he was brilliant against Chelsea and looking forward to seeing him against City. I imagine the easy league games help him to be able to play at a high level when he needs to, at his age you would think he would need to be managed but seems to play all the time.

02 Apr 2016 10:48:17
I certainly agree that di Maria was mismanaged but he should take a bit of responsibility too I can't remember watching a player with less heart I have lost no sleep about him going.

He had a decent game against chelsea (i never saw the second game ) and has been good for psg but he walks about the pitch a lot in a team full of pace and power that are 2 steps up from any thing in the league.
I think he may end up at united but i'm not sure it would be a good move .

No doubt i will get a bit of stick for that but i argued the same about bastian last year .

Good luck to him he won the french league with a team assembled at the cost of entire league i would think LOL. He is good when surrounded by great players, pants when asked to lead a team. He has no bottle in my opinion and even though i can't see the back of our managers sooner than later, Di Maria was just as much at fault for his failing as the Manger.

02 Apr 2016 11:16:49
If he was that good then he could adapt to different positions in midfield / attack and do what he's paid for. He wanted the psg move before he came to untied but psg where financially restrained from doing a deal. Even though Di Maria said early on in his career that he supported united, that now can been seen as a load of bo***x because we probably showed an interest early on in hi career too. I think he coasts through most matches now from what I've seen.

02 Apr 2016 11:20:58
Meant to say can"t wait to see the back of our manager :)

02 Apr 2016 12:05:21
Of course Di Maria was at fault. He never wanted to come here and didn't give his all at any point. But, and this is the thing, he could have been an important player for us last season if he was used in the right way. He was better than every other winger in our team, and played well when given freedom at the start. The key issue that he raises is how van Gaal likes to micromanage players: giving them specific instructions about where on how they should be playing. A good manager builds their key players identity into the team's identity. A van Gaal just tries to impose his own identity on all the players regardless of the implications. Every player we have signed has been van Galled to some extent and it has left us with a very un-dynamic, often impotent attack.
