One of the most common posts on this site relates to our style of play being too cautious, defensive, negative and lacking in passion despite the fact that we are second in the league. A lot of posters are vehemently opposed to this approach advocating instead a far more attacking philosophy driven by pace and passion even though this is a much higher risk and reward strategy. After the city game 1 poster even said he would rather us lose 3-0 as long as we played with passion mmmm
I am going to make a simple statement therefore and would invite readers to agree/disagree adding comments if they wish.
' i would rather us continue to play our current style of football if the end result is automatic champions league qualification than have us play carefree attacking football and finish outside the top 4'
Simple Q you either agree or you don't. The third option of attacking football and automatic qualification doesn't exist at the moment.
Midday tomorrow i'll log back on and see the results.

Agree9 Disagree3

lvg was at munich for 2 year he won the title and got to the CL final but got sacked due to the style of football.
the following year munich won the treble playing great attacking football.
teams like munich madrid etc have a tradition to not only win but win the right way.

{Ed025's Note - so do utd jred..

22 Nov 2015 12:07:19
I'd rather get relegated than see us persist with this approach.

Football is about entertainment in my eyes, only a few clubs around the world are known for their style in a positive way, we have been one of the leaders of attacking, 'we will score more than you football' for many a year, which has enabled us to benefit now from those previous accomplishments. Over recent year's that mindset has declined (not just under Moyes and LVG), but we have reached a tipping point where LVG is taking it to an extreme. Media and other fans are enjoying tagging us as "boring", in a short amount of time it will become the norm and that is concerning.

Even if we win everything playing this way it is very short termist. We will lose the next generation of fans, broadcasters will notice a decline in viewing figures and eventually it will catch up with us. Where we lead others will follow, in many ways winning in this manner just compounds the issue because there is no motive to change the mentality.

It's slowly killing the game as a spectator sport.

{Ed025's Note - i agree with that beast..

22 Nov 2015 12:31:00
Beast this happens periodically throughout football. Especially in more technically competent leagues. In particular Italy and Argentina over the last 30 years. It goes from one extreme to the other. England being stuck in its ways and technically deficient due to the graham Taylor mentality missed the big debate.

At the moment the cautious possession style is in the ascendancy. Couple of years it will swing back.

Jose based his whole career on that style. So has pep. The two most successful coaches of the last decade. Each with their own spin on it.

You have to adapt with the times. There's no point in playing a keegan style kamikaze attacking football style if your opponents are all playing a possession based style. But we have to be ready for the switch in styles when fashion moves the other way.

Beast,

You would rather see us get relegated? That makes me and you 100 different, I would rather almost anything happened in my life than united get relegated and I think most people would agree. That's a crazy statement, sport is about winning, style comes after.

22 Nov 2015 13:06:08
GDS2 - Yes I watch to enjoy it, I would enjoy us more playing attacking football irrespective of the outcome (if that meant us playing in the Championship so be it, I would still watch us) .

When I compete at anything I play to win, but I do not control the players or manager, so I prefer to enjoy watching. I appreciate your point and the vast majority of supporters will agree with you.

Just my personal preference mate.

Mort - I appreciate your point as well, we have just taken it to a whole new level.

22 Nov 2015 12:49:08
ed25 that was my point .
lvg would last at the likes of madrid etc playing this brand, why should he at united .

{Ed025's Note - im not his biggest fan jred, and he has not really endeared himself to the supporters with his style of play but give the guy some credit, he has stopped the bleeding and at least utd are now competitive, he is certainly not the long term answer mate but at least the respect is back..

22 Nov 2015 13:42:17
jred he won't need to play this style of football at madrid or barca, u cannot compare utd to real madrid or barca, we have similar reputation and brand not similar teams, other than ddg no player from our team gets in Barcelona or madrid side, yet u want to judge him with the same standards.
Put one of suarez, messi or neymar at utd and we would win the league without breaking a sweat, with the way we play we won't be conceding many and with one of the above our scoring problems will be taken care of, it won't be pretty by any means but we would win the league like chelsea under mourinho in his first spell.

22 Nov 2015 14:00:08

leicester are top of the league playing great attacking football, you don't need to have messi and co.

united show look to set the same standards as munich and co the op imo is accepting second best.

22 Nov 2015 13:31:57
ed
im not saying any different but for a team like united or munich is that enough.
remember the whole thing is in response to the op .
and statements like

" i would rather us continue to play our current style of football if the end result is automatic champions league qualification than have us play carefree attacking football and finish outside the top 4".

the top teams aim to win the league not just finish top 4 and they aim to do it the right way .

how much time do you give lvg?

{Ed025's Note - that will be decided by higher powers than you or i jred mate..

22 Nov 2015 13:34:33
And that's the point ed. The patient is out of intensive care been through surgery and is now recovering.

We needed someone to come in clear out the players that weren't part of the future, rebuild the scouting and academy. Promote the best of the academy. And improve the tactical and technical skills of the squad.

Its preparation for the next man. Who will have some different ideas. But this approach gives us the tactical flexibility to adapt.

Fergie dominated the domestic scene but we really underperformed in Europe.

{Ed025's Note - 2 european cups is hardly underachieving mort..

I will say now that I am not a fan of possession football of Barcelona and especially the slow version we play. Thatsaid I am. Looking at the positives for the future:
1. We are better this year than last.
2. We now have a group of young players thathe Could play in the first team for years to come.
3. The deadwood has been weeded out.
4. At LVGs previous clubs the next manager has taken his solid base and ethos. added a bit more attacking intent and aggression and been. very successful. i see no reason why the same could not happen to us.
LVG and his style may not Be what we want. but he may be what we needed fir this 2/3 year period.
Or am I just being too hopeful!

22 Nov 2015 14:45:25
jred i am agree with u that we need to be playing more attacking for which van gaal must get the blame, football, but u cannot compare us with madrid Barcelona or bayern, it is not about accepting second best, it is about keeping it realistic, we do not have a team any where near as good as bayern and co, u cannot compare us with them.
Leicester have played mostly bottom half clubs until now, look at their fixture list from now till dec end they will be midtable by then.

22 Nov 2015 14:58:19
And if we hadn't ran into Barcelona it could have been 4. But how many times were we outdone tactically? Dortmund. Porto. Monaco. All games we should have been winning.

How finals have Madrid munich and Barcelona reached over 20 years.

22 Nov 2015 15:08:09
common
i disagree .
we have a team capable of playing attacking football we have spent more than any other team over the last 2 year .
so to accept boring football is against the ethos of a club like united or barce etc .
if top 4 is the target well fair enough but you can still aim to do it the right way .
but uniteds ambition should be no different to the other top teams.
