We all know that it is far too early to write off Depay but I think it is worth remembering that he was signed on the basis that he would be an immediate starter within the first team. Memphis had just come off a great goal scoring season and was given a job on the left wing from the get go by the manager.

As there is comparisons with Ronaldo you have to keep in mind Ronaldo was just 18 years old when he signed for United, a kid literally just out of school. Memphis is 21 years old now, which is a 3 year difference from when both started their United journeys. Unlike Memphis who was signed to have an impact right now, Ronaldo was signed as raw potential to develop and at 18 years old was not expected to have an immediate impact on the first team.

Admittedly I was not one of these folk who over hyped Memphis as I hadn't seen him play as regularly as others so my expectations weren't as high as some who had dubbed him the next best thing. What I do expect is for him to be able to play competently, work hard and show that he wants to be here - an impression I haven't as yet been given. Like I said it is too early to label Depay a flop but he really needs to grow up and show us what he can do on the pitch, soon.

Good post Maze,

This is similar to what I posted about a month ago with regards to the attitude and effort of the lad when people were debating if he should be dropped before he had all of the bad press. Thankfully Shappy and GDS2 pointed out the error of my ways and showed me that I was talking nonsense before the paper stories of Giggs having a word and Danny Blinds comments came out, these could have made things worse for him as now there is more pressure for him to perform and he knows that the press are waiting to pounce. Hope he can turn it around and this is a wake up call for him, I think he has responded well with the comments he has made now just needs some pitch time and some decent performances.

Just for the record - I said at the time of signing that I was amazed we paid the money we did for him and I couldn't see what the fuss was about. Naturally I was lambasted and quoted numerous times he won X award for his mediocre displays in the World Cup and set the Dutch league on fire like Alfonso and Kezman had before him.

I think Dirk Kuyt is the new next big thing over there.

We overpaid and he is very raw. Thousands of players have potential, look at Januzaj who now can't get a kick. Too many people throw Ronaldo comparisons around willy nilly, it does my head in.

Football is all about immediacy now, time isn't afforded to players. We should have let PSG take him. Nobody knows what Depay will be like in 2-3 years so I wish people would stop saying he will be amazing, so many players have "wonderkid" thrown on them and nothing happens I have seen nothing in Depay to tell me he won't be another Nani.

The lad has made 13 competitive appearances for us.

or maybe people are willing to give him time tott?
geez some have there claws out this week don't they lol. why has this page now turned into a player bashing page this week?

you know eventually the minority's will drive away the majority on here through daft little snipes everyday.

I'm not suggesting we all agree by any stretch but why do we constantly have to read loaded threads in order to get a reaction from someone you want to lambast?

take a chill guys.

this is not directed at anyone in particular, I just love these pages but lately they have turned into a playground of crap and side taking tbh and its becoming very tiresome to read the same loaded threads everyday, it's stopping good threads that can be debated getting the attention.

let's engage in adult banter like we used to not little snipes and calling out other posters.

p. s jred it's good to see u back mate, hope u don't feel the need to take a break again pal, likewise it is good to see u back to beast mate, let's not make people feel the need to take a break.

that is all.

my opinion on depay is he needs time. he has great potential to be a very good goal scoring wide man but if his attitude is poor (something that has not been proven) then u would hope through maturity and expirence that will change.

part of the problem I think for the lad is the lack of movement at the top, there's no one there pulling defenders around to create space for him to operate in.

in a day where 20m won't get u much a young new to league winger deserves time and support to improve.

Some of these posts are a insane. Just because he is 21 does not mean he is more mature than someone who is 18 at a different period in time. Expectations gone mad.

How many Ronaldo's have I seen in my 30+ years watching United. The answer is zero. Ronaldo is a freak - albeit an immensely talented one. By the way, he doesn't play for us anymore and never will again so perhaps it's time to move on.

I'd rather see my team filled with exciting young lads like Depay and Martial given a go etc than buying 29+ prima donnas.

Writing him off after 13 game is absolutely ridiculous. he's a young human being, away from home in a new country in a bigger side. Let's judge him after 2 years not 3-4 months.

I've gone about turn on LVG recently. I think he's doing a pretty good job all in all and plays our young lads when appropriate. The football is a little dry, but it'll come. If it doesn't he's out and will be replaced in the summer.

No shame in U turns Eric there are thousands that did a U turn with sir Alex.

CTR - why did that post get your back up mate? What have I said that has gotten to you? I have re-read my post and in my opinion I believe it is rather constructive and relevant at this current moment.

Eric - I don't think Ronaldo is a 'freak' footballer. I remember when he first arrived at United as this scrawny kid with a lot of potential much like Depay but in my opinion Ronaldo has put in a massive amount of work to get where he is today. Had Ronaldo lacked the desire and work rate of a top professional he would have floundered.

In the opening line of my post I have clearly said "it is too early to write Depay off"

From what i can remember LVG said don't expect to much from him in the first season, so I'm not sure were you get this immediate impact from. The lad is raw and needs a bit of time, given time and the right coaching I'm sure he will come good. You don't score the amount of goals in the Dutch league like he did last season with out being half decent. one thing he should stop doing is prancing round town at night like he owns it and perhaps take a leaf out Lukes Shaws book and knuckle down and show us what he can do.

12 Nov 2015 09:14:23
Where did I get immediate impact from? Partly because he was immediately given a spot in the team ahead of players like Ashley Young who had a fine season the year before, partly due to the fact he was given the No.7 shirt that the false messiah Di Maria had just vacated, partly because the manager praised him as 'the best 21 year old in the world', partly due to his high fee for one so young, partly because of his stats the previous season and partly due to the fact the manager didn't see fit to sign any other wingers.
