How long until the media pin all Englands 2018 WC hopes on Lingard?

Seriously though, do we reckon, given some on the tripe Hodgson has given debuts to, Lingard derserves at least a cap?

I like Lingard he has talent and to be honest a lot of people on here has said he is good but not great and at best a squad player,

I'm not sure if these are the same people that said we should sell Smalling but if LVG can do to Lingard what he has with Smalling I think he'll be a very good player for us. LVG obviously likes him as player so if he keeps progressing the world is his oyster in my view.

05 Nov 2015 09:52:55
Are we talking about the same player here? He had a decent game the other night, but he has hardly been a revelation. He has been steady, not hard to look better than Mata or Depay on the wing and he has given the ball away a lot. He is a young player who will be a decent squad player at best imo. Couple of years time he will be at Sunderland or Newcastle.

I appreciate England have been bad, but there are much better wingers than Lingard - he needs to do a bit more than play half decent against a very poor CSKA team that offered nothing going forward. He won't get a kick in another windows time.

I just want to caveat my above post by saying I have nothing against Lingard and want him to do well. I just think with the players at the club and the players we inevitably bring in he won't be featuring much. Look how little game time Wilson and Perreira for example are getting, and we have been awful going forward.

I appreciate McNair has been injured lately, but he can't get a kick either and an abundance of defenders we don't have.

This manager plays youth when he has no other option. In the winter and definitely by the summer he will be buying another winger I believe, plus we have Januzaj to come back. I don't see Lingard being at the club in a couple of years.

Beast,

Not like you to write somebody off before they have been given a chance. LVG clearly rates him, he was man of the match the other night and played really well. I have said on a number of occasions I think he is good at many things but not brilliant at anything, could be a great squad player for us especially as he can play a few different positions.

'Not hard to look better than Mata and Depay', two international players who are struggling a bit in this system who as you said, he looks better than, maybe that isn't a coincidence?

He gave the ball away a few times in the first half on Tuesday because he was trying different thing, but to say he has given the ball away a lot is massively unfair, his accuracy of passing is one of his strong points and I imagine one of the reasons why LVG rates him.

05 Nov 2015 10:15:21
My heart says yes but my head says no. If he had a cap and did well, the pressure would be put on him instantly to continue performing. Let him build his form with us before he gets the England lot on him.

05 Nov 2015 10:26:50
GDS2 - I don't want to criticise Lingard unnecessarily. But his touch was poor on Tuesday, he is a 7 out of 10 or under in most areas as you say, good but not great. It was just refreshing seeing one of our wingers get passed a man and stay out wide, this made his performance seem better than it actually was. He did set-up Rooney beautifully.

He wanted to play Martial up front, that left LVG will few options because Young was covering RB. Mata and Depay haven't done much at all this season, our new striker was a revelation when he first signed up front. Yet how many games has Lingard played?

I think we are too quick to build players up some times talking about England and saying LVG rating him is obvious is not backed up by anything yet. To me it will be obvious only if he picks him if other players gather form and he gets near the team after the next 2 windows. I will bet you whatever you want that he won't get on the pitch for more than 10 league games next season, as a sub or starter.

I'd much rather Welbeck out wide than Lingard.

Beast,

A very poor CSKA side? Really? Very poor? Maybe they didn't offer much going forward because we played well? Especially Lingard, who kept their right back (who was their main threat in the first game) more worried about his defensive duties than getting forward. I thought he was extremely positive, always looking to run at the defender and had the confidence to have a few shots. I also seem to remember he claimed an assist. a very good assist. If it wasn't for him making the run and having the quality to make the cross we wouldn't be top of the group. I think that should be classed as a decent outing.

I think people expect too much too soon.

05 Nov 2015 10:44:31
Is Lingard great no but does he deserve a cap yes probably but this says more about how more england actually are nowadays rather then how good Lingard currently is you have to remember our midfield regulars when fit seem to be Barry, Milner, Shelvey, Delph, Henderson who in previous times would of got nowhere near an england squad are all regulars so yes he probably deserves a shot with the ox and walcott currently injured i would rather see Lingard play then lennon or Townsend.

05 Nov 2015 10:59:49
Atko - How many of those CSKA players would get in our team? They are mid-lower level Prem at best and they turned up with a plan to defend and hopefully nick a goal, like most teams. They are not a good team and their RB looked quite good in the first game, but again didn't do much he was just overhyped by the commentators. What did Fernandes do in that first game aside from the penalty that was so incredible?

05 Nov 2015 11:27:34
Same team that battered city last year.

05 Nov 2015 11:34:33
Beast, they are a team full of internationals. They are currently top of their league by 9 points. They are playing in the champs league on a regular basis. They are no mugs. You seem to think just because a team doesn't play in one of the 4 major European leagues they should be a walk over.

and Lingard, who only has a handful of appearances for United has been a real handful for a 25 year old proven right back (I think he has over 130 appearances for Gremio and CSKA and 1 for brazil) . I think that's an achievement. I don't believe he should get an England cap based on 1 game, but I don't think his performance should be undermined because you think the opposition were poor.

05 Nov 2015 11:40:05
Does everybody realise that was the 1st time that we have beaten any Russian opposition at Old Trafford. They are12 points clear in domestic league they beat City last season but beast you say they area really poor team. Total nonsense you use any excuse to have a go at the coach or certain players.

05 Nov 2015 11:44:17
I don't always agree with Beast but on this occasion I find it hard to believe how people have disagreed with him. Squad player or impact player will be the most he can achieve at United.

05 Nov 2015 11:52:34
I can't believe how quick some people can be to write a player off before he's been given a fair crack at the whip. Judge him after a season or two if he gets plenty of minutes on the pitch, not after a few cameo appearances that have been interrupted by injuries.

05 Nov 2015 12:12:51
no way does he deserve an england call up yet, it's far to easy to get a cap these days ! how many games as he played for the first team at united ? the national team supposed to be the elite of our country not a squad of players who have had one or two good games.

05 Nov 2015 12:21:24
I was only asking a questions guys.

05 Nov 2015 14:09:49
He's neither ready nor good enough for an England call up. I can see him leaving the club in the next few seasons and ending up at Everton/West Brom.

05 Nov 2015 14:36:39
I think we should let the kid play more games and see how he develops before calling him good, bad, great not good enough. He is united through and through and sometimes like Kane they suddenly surprise people. I thought he played very well when you consider what was asked of him, the occasion given his lack of playing time. He definitely has the right attitude, many players would not have squared that ball for rooney and taken a swing at it and many would have missed by a large margin.

06 Nov 2015 00:29:50
His approach and attitude the other night was good, but for me it feels as if many are swayed by our style of late.

In the first half especially, his end product was below par bu5 he showed good attitude to keep plugging away and his assist was neat and tidy.

An England cap that does not warrant though. They are given out like sweets these days! If he keeps it up and kicks on then fair enough. I also don't like that all too often being a squad player at our great club (+ others of similar stature) is seen as enough to be in the England squad at the expense of experienced first teamers from "lesser" clubs. A classic example of this was Calum Chambers when he first moved to Arsenal.

06 Nov 2015 08:05:10
Red 79 couldn't have said it better myself.

06 Nov 2015 08:31:53
The fact Lingard is even being considered by some as a potential national cap winner at the moment shows how much in decline international football is and how little winning a cap for your country represents these days.

06 Nov 2015 10:07:00
I know, if only we had won all of our group games with these dreadful players getting caps for their country.

06 Nov 2015 10:07:01
Wow, a youngster has literally just got his first string of games for the first team and is being written off.

I think he has played quite well tbh, and i'm still an old romantic who loves to see this club produce its own players.

Depay got a lot more time (playing very badly) then Lingard is getting and he wasnt even homegrown.
