I’ll probably get lambasted for this but does anyone else think Scholes was harsh on his thoughts on our play last night? I’m paraphrasing here but he basically said that we’re still not playing in a cohesive way and lack penetration i.e. somethings missing, whilst Wolfsberg were a really talented team that attacked with flair and purpose.

I actually thought we created some good, clear goal scoring opportunities that we really should have put away (but for poor finishing) and I only really remember one half chance from Wolfsberg in the second half despite all of their pressure. If we had played like Wolfsberg did in the second half I reckon he would’ve said that we dominated without having an end product. it seems to be the fashionable thing for pundits to say about our play at the moment. Before anyone rips me a new one, he also reckons Rooney will still score 25 this season

I love Paul Scholes. Anything he says is right by me :)

I think he is right. We looked more dangerous than Wolfsburg though. We did create some good chances last night, but there wasn't much team cohesiveness, not many people on the same wavelength and I think that is what he is getting at.

Depay never uses his full back (or anyone for that matter), It's rare Mata uses his fullback unless its a diversion, the CM's rarely look for a penetrating through ball (this will happen more now we have Martial), Rooney causes confusion for me not knowing where he should be and getting in the way when he drops deep. Martial is new to the team so is bound to still be working on linking up. When Herrera plays with Mata and Carrick we have more intelligent play, I think Schweiny can add to that, but we don't look like a team at all. We are a unit defensively, but attacking wise it's a bit of a lottery with no real structure to our play.

The key problems for me are Rooney & Depay at the moment, they don't seem to link well with anyone and attacks break down far too frequently when they have the ball. Just my take.

Totally agree the last few games has seen us play some of our best football for years, albeit in brief periods. It seems to be down to martial, not only is he willing to run off the ball and down the flanks to create space for others he actually runs at and beats defenders and he's created a few clear cut chances.
Bring in hererra for Rooney and maybe give pereira some game time instead of Memphis and we could have an incredibly creative and flowing side.

I'm not suggesting Depay will ever reach the same heights but Ronaldo was pretty inconsistent in his early days at United so it might pay to have a little patience where Depay is concerned

Erm no way mate. Recommend watching ronaldo playing against us for Sporting. It is a pretty lengthy and see how intelligent he is and how he passes the ball. Ronaldo even in his early days with his show boating would deliver one moment of magic which made you forgive him.

Depay for me is nani when we bought him.I thought he was comfortable with both feet but seems to have no interest to shoot with his left foot. For me i would give him a 4 out 10 so far this season and poor poor poor.

It has nothing to do with him not scoring but more to do with him being super selfish and also losing the ball constantly and quite lazy in defending. His finishing so far is also pretty sh. t.

GCU,

See below what my response to that is, are we seriously calling our young kid poor poor poor? Just what they need, we are supporters why don't we support him, I am sure people said he would need a season to settle, he's done ok for 3 months and some people have given up on him, pathetic if you ask me.

GCU,

He's played 11 games for us and you've written him off already, bit harsh .
And despite what you remember, the Ronaldo I remember in his first season gave the ball away a lot, didn't do much defensively and managed 6 goals in 40 games, but showed there was more to come, and o believe Depay will show a lot more of what he can do as the season progresses

GDS2,

You seem to put words in peoples mouth, He does not warrant to be starting every game and has been rubbish. The manager seems to have no issue dropping others after one bad game but this boy get start after start.

I did not say sell or loan him but he does not deserve to start every game and maybe a year or two too early. Who nows it might actually get him to play better as he might be more influential coming on as a sub.

One thing you can't teach footballers is intelligence and some have it and some don't and he seems to be really lacking on that department when it comes to his decision making. He never looks to pass and make an assist.

This is not a discussion about supporting someone but a discussion of how he has performed so far and I stand by my statement rubbish so far. So, so selfish it is infuriating.

You think he is Ronaldo quality?

01 Oct 2015 22:19:10
Never said that GCU, what I'm saying is Ronaldo wasn't always the 60 goal a season world player of the year he turned out to be, and it remains to be seen how good Depay wil become, but I believe he'll go on to be a very good player for us

Then people should not use the Ronaldo example to justify him starting very game. He is never ever going to be in that class but hopefully a good player.

I will hold judgement on very good player as never seen a very good or great player without a footballing brain. His decision making is what concerns me. there are a lot of guys with speed and ball skill but what separates the very good to so rans are the ones who have great vision on the pitch and make good decisions.

01 Oct 2015 23:14:14
Decision making? Did you watch ronaldo in his early years?

02 Oct 2015 08:14:23
Have to agree with the Ronaldo thing, he was pants when he first arrived. kept losing the ball, took everything on. It was his training and dedication that's made him the player he is. He was the rawest talent I've ever seen. His confidence was something to behold though, it never once crossed his mind to change, he has continued to take everything on and reaped all the rewards

02 Oct 2015 08:19:09
Gcu, I have a different memory of Ronaldo in his early years - he was also selfish, patchy and inconsistent.

02 Oct 2015 11:32:13
GCU,

I didn't put any words in your mouth, you called him rubbish and that is what I said you called him.
