I saw a massive thread down the page about LvG not trusting youth in the league cup.

He said he's not going to use Wilson and Lingard tonight and they're getting a rest day.

Maybe he's going to use one of them/both of them at some point vs Sunderland on Saturday. Ipswich are in decent form and will be a lot more up for it than Sunderland.

Agree0 Disagree0

was the post about lvg not trusting youth or about the game tonight being the perfect chance to have a player like wilson on the bench and give him some minutes.

i would give wilson perreira etc a go in the cup before the EPL .
wilson hasn't made the 18 man squad for the league this season i would of though the game tonight would of been a good chance for him

That would be my first thought too jred, but maybe the manager has a better idea than us having watched them in training etc?

Or maybe he thinks Wilson isn't ready for the first team yet. There is a massive step between being the best at under 21 level and being good enough for a champions league teams first team.

As for Lingard I like him but I doubt he would ever be more than a squad player for us at best. I'd play Pereira ahead of him to be honest, as he has more potential.

Then let us remember a year ago LvG underestimated lower league opposition in this very competiton. I expect he will field a much stronger side this time round. We still haven't clicked in attack yet, that will only come with game time. So it might make sense to play the first team in this game.

I watched him on Monday and he is still very raw. Imo he is not ready and is still some way off. I can only assume that the coaching staff concur with this opinion. Lindgard looked miles ahead of him to be fair. I think AP may well be involved.
I think lvg got burnt lat year by mk dons who are inferior to Ipswich so he won't take too many chances and rightly so imo this is a very important match.

shap
then why not let him go out on loan.

we have the league , fa and EC who really cares about this cup .

we also have a massive month of football starting with wolfsburg on wed.
i would play kids give them a chance and if we get beat we get beat .

lets be honest maze gets stick for saying lvg can do no right but there is a good few who argue he can do no wrong .

I think LVG was clear on the matter. Having just played in the U-21 game against Everton, they are not needed for tonight and can rest up for the remainder of this week. They will get their chance when the manager thinks they've earned it. To say he's not promoting youth is ridiculous given that Depay, Martial, and Shaw are now solid first team players. The policy is clearly oriented towards youth, although as much through acquisition as development.

LVG was very clear on it Shawthing. But some people want to make a big deal about everything.

LVG not giving youth a chance, makes me laugh

Normally I would think if the youth are good enough they will play, especially in games like this one. In fairness to LVG we have a long way to go in building up relationships with the first team players so it makes sense to keep them going and improve their understanding. I just worry about fitness, a lot of games in a short space of time, the injuries will mount up as niggles and aches are not given time to rest and he pushes them on the training pitch as well.

I also worry about the amount of chances the young players will get to build up their experience (not the £30m+ signings). LVG has shown a reluctance to drop players for poor form, so it really will be an injury crisis that allows the academy players to get a chance, just like it was last season with Blackett & McNair.

Jred, fron what I've heard Wilson is reluctant to go on loan as he feels that it is the beginning of the end for youngsters.
For me though I think the writing was on the wall for Wilson when we spent an initial 36m on Martial. Who is a very similar type striker to Wilson and is the same age. They are both 6ft, strong and very quick and clinical finishers. If LvG rated Wilson that highly spending that sort of money on Martial makes no sense. But having seen both of them play for the first team I would agree that Martial looks the better prospect and is certainly more refined than Wilson currently.
Wilson needs a loan where he will play every week, probably in the championship to start with. I hope he makes it as I had high hopes for him. Its just starting to look like he will miss the mark.

As for why LvG hasn't sent him on loan I would imagine because we are very light on numbers. We only have Rooney Martial and Wilson who are strikers. Fellaini can play there if really needed but certainly isn't great. So if Wilson left on loan that would just leave us Rooney amd Martial, one hasn't scored in the league yet and the other is new to the league.

As for whether he should be on the bench for tonight? Well I would have thought 90 minutes of competitive football would be better for his development than 90 minutes of bench warming. Unless he was going to get at least 30 minutes tonight I would have let him play for the Under 21's too.

Beast, how many young players are going to get extended opportunities to shine in any of the top teams? My guess is our average age is now approaching the lowest in the league.

As for the risk of injuries, while I don't disagree, look at Chelsea last year. They played a consistent team without too many changes.

5th youngest average age Shawthing.
