on Wilson and Lingard, Van Gaal said: "Today they have had a recovery day and also tomorrow is more recovery but I don't need them so they can have a day off and then Thursday they will be fresh and can train."

Comments like this I cannot comprehend. Young lads want to play first team and with our squad so thin this cup game would be an ideal time to give them some minutes. Great way to shatter a young lads confidence and hopes.

maze
im not sure i would go that far .
i think its more a case lvg is happy with his attacking options

23 Sep 2015 10:39:02
Surely Jred if you plan on blooding any youngsters this season (who may just be needed during a potential injury emergency with our small squad) then the first round of the lesser cup, against lower league competition would be the ideal time.

23 Sep 2015 10:51:25
Correct Maze. Just like we did last time round against MK Dons. First round of the lesser cup. Hardly ideal isn't it.

23 Sep 2015 10:51:41
He did that last year Maze and got stung and slated for it, novel idea but maybe he wants to win this trophy.

23 Sep 2015 10:56:42
Last season at MK Dons LvG caught a cold when giving youth a chance in a lesser cup against lower league opposition. He may go with a bit more experience against a Championship club managed by someone in McCarthy known to favour physical attributes. See who makes the bench and perhaps what LvG sees in training will be reflected in the team

23 Sep 2015 10:57:32
JMB,

You are probably right in what you are saying but you always have to go one step too far, 'can't comprehend' 'shatter a young lads confidence', they played in the under 21s Monday night, maybe he has other ideas of who he wants to play tonight. I don't think Lingard will make it at United and Wilson has been poor every time he has played for the first team, at under 21 level he is top class, so I imagine there is work going on behind the scenes to give him that step up.

23 Sep 2015 11:04:16
I read he's starting Goss and Varela. Hopefully Pereira gets a run out too.

23 Sep 2015 11:09:35
The guy can't win. He plays kids we lose you'll then be all he's a clown doesn't know what he's doing throwing cups away we could win sack him now.

He plays the first team to win the game and stand a chance of winning the cup you'll be all youth has no chance no point in having an academy sack him now.

im surprised wilson isn't on the bench (maybe he will be ) but if he can't make the bench for this game , when is he going to

23 Sep 2015 11:37:02
Mort,

You would think some people change their opinions to make sure they have one that suggests the manager has no idea what he is doing wouldn't you? Surely not.

23 Sep 2015 11:42:11
LVG will play a strong team tonight he won't want to get stung like last season 😆😆

23 Sep 2015 11:51:57
Exactly my point Jred. Everyone is all for creating these talents and using the youth team when they want to say the famous line "we are United, we create players not buy them". Then as my constant character assassin GDS points out Wilson is head and shoulders above all other u21s players and is too good for that level, so as you say Jred if he is not trusted to step up for this type of game when will the manager show faith in him?

23 Sep 2015 12:09:04
That is why I respect Wenger. he uses this competition to give the youth players a run and never scared to even field them against a PL team.

Granted you might lose, but when are these guys ever going to play if they don't play in this competition. The pL seems out of the question as every game is must win and tough competition, so when do these guys actually get to play is a mystery.

Perreira just renewed his contract and has seen zero minutes, I bet he would be having second thoughts. Most player would rather play first team football somewhere in a decent league compared to sitting their ass on the bench season long and playing for U21 at United.

Granted we could lose if we play a young team but given our fixtures list and injuries in defense, I would personally want the key players rested. Winning with our first team against Ipswich and picking up a few more injuries is dumb as in October those teams will turn us over if we are playing a makeshift team.

23 Sep 2015 12:25:31
For me it just hammers home that LVG doesn't think the squad is good enough to challenge for the big two competitions.

Fergie had no problem playing young players in the league cup because his main goal was to win the league and champions league. If we did well in the domestic cups it was a bonus.

LVG has said that he doesn't think that the squad is good enough to win the league or the CL. But because we haven't won a trophy in a few years, there will be pressure on him to win something this year. Like Arsenal in recent years our best chance to win a trophy is in the domestic cups and because of this LVG can't risk fielding a young team. Shame really because we were traditionally a team that put our trust in young players, and worrying too because if injuries keeping mounting up we could be relying on our youth lads in much bigger games.

23 Sep 2015 12:29:00
If LvG dares play a player over 25 i'm becoming a Wednesday fan.

23 Sep 2015 12:50:44
Exactly my point Danny. Good post mate.

23 Sep 2015 13:45:27
SAF had an unassailable position built on many years of success so could take a chance. If LvG loses tonight playing a load of youth and remember the youth last year gave him a 4 nil defeat, then those calling for them to play will be screaming loudest to sack him, not that they need much excuse. Also how many times have we paid full price to watch kids that were not good enough, Exeter and was it Burton spring to mind. He buys a 19 year old and gives him a chance because he is good enough. If they are good enough he will play them.

We don't even know the team and some are getting het up starting to criticise the manager, I suppose not a shock really. Wait and see what the team is.

23 Sep 2015 13:47:21
I'm ok with it as long as they have been told what the plans are and what they need to do. Who knows though

23 Sep 2015 13:56:04
if we played a team full of kids and got beat i honestly don't think that many would care.

but its not a case of just playing kids he could play a mix.

what has happened to wilson and perreira that in a game like this they can't even make the bench .

23 Sep 2015 14:13:38
Well said Jred.

23 Sep 2015 14:28:16
Did Man City play their youngsters last night? Because apparently they have the best super duper academy that churns out future Ronaldo's and Messi's 😆

23 Sep 2015 14:33:34
hb
where not city

23 Sep 2015 14:40:13
Jred

100 percent agree with you mate.

Gav

Man City was playing away at a premiere league club mate and a bit different than playing against a championship side who is struggling and being at OT.

People then should just accept it that we will lose young players on this basis.

23 Sep 2015 15:14:47
Very observant of you jred! 😊

It's just that we're supposed to be afraid of their academy which is world class and we're slating our own team for not playing the youth (even before it happens!).

Personally I've been satisfied with the likes of Wilson, Adnan, McNair, Blackett etc. getting a few chances over the last 18 months I don't see it as a big problem like others.

Will be interesting to see who gets game time tonight after all the speculation.

23 Sep 2015 15:41:18
Gcu I guess City will lose all their young players too then, seems a shame seeing as they have the best academy around.

Sunderland are pretty bad too mate.

23 Sep 2015 15:41:23
I have backed Ipswich to make the playoffs this season, they aren't a poor team and are not 'struggling' as GCU suggests, this will be one of their biggest games of the season playing at OT and they will be up for it, I'm not too fussed what team he picks as long as it wins.

I would like / expect Wilson and Lingard on the bench but if not then I won't be crying, looking forward to hearing the team and seeing how we get on.

23 Sep 2015 20:49:22
Gav

City has a huge crop of 14 to 18 year olds, Their under 21 are still not there. wait for a 2 to 3 years and you will see players coming through their academy.

Besides this is not a city discussion and i guess playing away at a PL side for you is the same as us playing at home against a championship side, i actually rate us better than that:)
This is a united discussion and why someone like wilson is not playing. Tonight would be perfect occasion for him to play.

GDS2

Ipswich so far is are so poor and offers nothing and packing 10 men behind the ball.
