The current side reminds me of the 80's (showing my age a bit). We had random results and our star players were paul mcgrath, Robson, mark Hughes and erm jester olsen. Was good times even though we didn't exactly dominate europe thanks to our neighbours. My point is that we are back to true fans appreciating what is great about our club and not necessarily expecting a win every game (although I miss it alot). Think we are going through a cycle again and a successful manager will follow lvg. Every where he has been has set up a successful period and I admire him when he clearly states that particular players and styles are implemented for when he is no longer managing the club. He has been Brought in to do a particular job which involves a structure which won't include him. I don't think there are many managers around like that and I think think it speaks a little bit about the man and we will see the benefits 2 to 3 years down the line.

This is your opinion Supasub and I wouldn't comment here (at the risk of being repetitive) until I saw you say "true fans appreciating what is great about our club".

Every fans is a "true fan" in their own way, just because some have more faith in the manager than others doesn't make them any more or less supporters - managers come and go. In fact if it were to go one way I would say those holding the managers antics to account are more "true", because what he is doing is anti everything we have known for the past 20+ years. The 70's and 80's we were aiming to get to where we got to in the 90's, this guy is re-writing the script and path for the club (I know it needed changing, but that doesn't mean his way is correct for the club), the only evidence we have on display is that the road is full of direction changes and strange decisions.

LVG talks a good game and his plan may be good, but we haven't seen that yet, we have seen a style of play which is out of date and out of sync with what most fans like. IF we are better in 2-3 years then everyone will be praising what LVG accomplished, if we are no further along then everyone will be slating whoever the new manager is and saying they didn't take advantage of what platform LVG left - he is a good manipulator, we want to believe in him because otherwise it's a miserable time, so he enables that belief - don't drink the Kool-Aid is my advice, he is winging it.

Truth is only a small number of managers would choose to play the LVG way, so all this talk of style and players being left behind could be just torn up the second he leaves. Massive gamble and we are watching this rubbish football for the next few years for probably no long term upside. I'm not talking about the stuff behind the club, as we don't know enough about that and we aren't entirely sure what is down to him or others. I'm talking about the football on the pitch the end product, the players signed and the way we play - the stuff we can hold the manager directly accountable for and not need to be inside the club to know about.

So, I am a true supporter but don't believe this gamble will be worth it long term, the see-saw can fall either way very easily with this man in charge, I bet he has almost been sacked a handful of times already. One small point people aren't hitting on is the damage being done to our commercial appeal with this style which has a whole host of potential problems for us that I won't go into now as it may take your post in a different direction.

Well put supasub, very well thought out and quite true although in regards to the LVG comments, I'm sure there will be a few that disagree unfortunately.

Beast ,

Didn't take long for that small ray of positivity at the weekend to leave the building again :).
Is every manager brought into a football club not a gamble which could go either way ?
As for causing damage to the club , at least he won't be bringing a court case against major shareholders over a racehorse

Beast, I didn't realise that my post said that we didn't have any "true" fans or it was exclusive to some in anyway. I meant it inclusively of all fans. Not every post has to be made even the slightest bit controversial due to picking the bones out of a particular sentence.

Ok, but I just wanted to put an opposing view and clear up any misconceptions which could be derived. I enjoyed your post Supasub I just have a different take and didn't want it to be assumed that only fans supporting the goings on are "true fans".

Beast mate, you know I have defended you in the past as you make some good points. However you do seem unable to avoid raining on every parade. We know how you feel but lately you have lost any sense of objectivity. Might be better f you adopted JMB's tactic and simply posted 'We're all doomed'

Bilko - Yes every manager is a gamble, that is my point.

When we start seeing some teamwork, regular neat interchanges and real understanding in our game we can start to praise the work LVG is doing imo. At the minute it is all wishful thinking, there is no team cohesion and we are a one trick pony. That is my only point here, let's look at the only evidence we can judge and that is games that have been played on the pitch - not games played in 2 years time or what LVG has done previously decades ago. He has had over 50 games in charge, we are still a very long way short of playing the type of football he and we want to see, there has been nominal progress on the pitch during this time, despite the money spent and time on the training ground.

Thanks beast. I'm not lvg's biggest fan but he is what he is. I'd easily have at least 3 other managers I can think of at our club than lvg, but he is I think doing what he was brought in to do and doing it in a way that doesn't include him in the structure going forward. I don't think schweinsteiger was a routine purchase. I think he's been brought in for his experience to add to the lack of it from generally younger players brought into the club the last year or 2. I don't think we will necessarily make global star signings over the next year. I expect more up and coming younger players to be brought in.

AJH - I either post what I think or I don't post. I haven't started these threads and I am just adding my own perspective to the subject being discussed, I appreciate the subject may be a little repetitive, but I do try to bring something new to each post I make and ultimately we are limited to talking about Man Utd (or fishing it seems). I do appreciate where you are coming from though, I'll just hold back a bit

Supasub - all good mate.

Tony when have I ever said "we are all doomed"? Your just being silly now.
