Thought I'd change the topic a bit here.

Just wondering what or who made you a Manchester United fan?

I'm sure a lot will say family but maybe some people have other reasons?

For me it was the moment Cantona scored that winner in the FA Cup final against the scousers. My family were split as United and Pool fans and I remember seeing that moment as a kid and thinking this is bloody amazing! That is when my love for United started. The most disappointing thing for me was when Eric left a year later.

Be great to read other peoples stories too.

Thats one of my fave United moments. I was young then, had watched almost the whole game and it was still 0-0 when we had to leave for a family engagement, livid! By the time we got to the car and turned the radio on the commentator was screaming and it took me a few seconds to work out Cantona had scored. I ran back to the house to see the replays and was awestruck. can't remember what the family engagement was but I remember grinning with pride for the rest of the day or probably week if I'm honest.

I had a straight choice between lfc and united where I grew up, my older brother was lfc and my friends were split. The main reasons I ended up on the right side were my dad's stories of Best and the Busby babes but also the fact Giggs had just burst onto the scene (I'm welsh so he was an instant hero).

{Ed025's Note - lucky escape there HB..

I live next door to the ground and my next door neighbour was a lovely lady named Nesta Bergess who was the tea lady at United for many years, she is the reason. Took me on the tours of the ground and got me some signed shirts along the way :)

{Ed025's Note - lucky guy mate..

I was 5 in 1968 when United won the European cup.Bobby Charlton became my hero so it was natural for me to support United.

Dad took me to old Trafford against Ipswich, first half I didn't say a word I was in awe, second half I was singing my heart out with the rest of the fans, never looked back

My mum loved George best so would always put me in a Manchester United shirt when I was growing up.

Too right Ed025!

My dad didn't support any football team, thinks it's a game for fairies in the main. Guess I will have to relinquish my support for United and football in general then, AJH :)

{Ed025's Note - your dad sounds like a rugby league man HB..

Believe it or not lol, I was 10 at boarding school just outside Southampton and ended up buying Manchester United for a Subuteo( i think that's how you spell it) league at school after having watched them once on TV. Most of the kids supported London and Southern clubs and United was free to take. Life changing choice :)

{Ed025's Note - good story that mate..

When I was a kid my grandad, who lived in Cheshire , used to tell me all about United. He worked on the railways at Crewe and used to go to most games at Old Trafford from the early 50's through to the late 70's. He regularly saw the liked of Best , Law and Charlton play. But the one person he used to bang on about more than any was Duncan Edwards. The best of them all according to him.
Then when I started to play football seriously in the mid 80's , all my mated were Liverpool fans. Me and one mate were the odd ones out , so to speak, but never let that bother me.
After Norman Whiteside scored that cracker in the 85 Cup Final , there were suddenly a lot more United fans around !!

{Ed025's Note - i was at that game betty...and i have got a wound here if you wish to rub some salt in it mate.. :)

My Grandad was at the 68 final, passed it on to my dad who in turned passed it on to me. He put a roof over my head, great holidays, great Christmases but one of the best things he did for me was pointing me on the road to being a United fan. No matter what's going on within the family, its always great to get together for United games.

1985,big Norman scoring the winner in cup final, been hooked ever since, he was my 1st hero and later on in life about 20 years ago I had the pleasure of getting quite drunk with him 😀

{Ed025's Note - now your just picking on me!.. :(

15 Sep 2015 19:41:06
He's rugby union Ed0025 as I'm from south wales. Its a real mans game apparently though I always found it a bit homo erotic all that scrummaging and rucking 😊

{Ed025's Note - great game though HB, and when you see these footballers rolling around after barely being touched it proves how right your dad is mate..

Villa vs United 1994 Coca Cola Cup Final. I didn't have a scooby about football at the time as my dad didn't watch it. Chose United because the cool kid in my class liked them. So glad he didn't support Villa.

{Ed025's Note - not as glad as he must be RWWD..

Both parents are pool fans.
I remember watching footy as a kid, players like Gary Bailey, Joe Jordan, Big Gordon Mcqueen, Greenhoff, McIlroy, Coppell, Macari, these are the players that instantly made me fall in love with UTD.

{Ed025's Note - i liked gordon Mcqueen ...and would like to take this opportunity to thank him for giving us hayley.. :)

Ed25 , never mind mate. At least you got your revenge 10 years later in the 95 final.
Mind you , that bloody ref nearly robbed us in 85. Sending off Kevin Moran for nothing. He hardly touched Peter Reid. Wasn't even a foul let alone a red card lol :)

{Ed025's Note - he should have been arrested rater than sent off in my book betty.. :)

Good post this. For me it was after watching the first game I can remember on TV which was the 1979 FA cup final. I watched it with my uncle who was a big Liverpool fan. I still hadn't decided which team to support as I was only 8 at the time, but because my uncle obviously hated united he wanted Arsenal to win, so I was cheering for united. So they are 2-0 down and then score twice in the last 5 minutes only for Alan Sunderland to score with the last kick of the game and Arsenal win 3-2. I could quite easily have chosen to follow Arsenal after that, especially as I remember being quite shocked at Alsn Sunderland's celebration after scoring the winner. running the whole length of the pitch like he had scored the winner in the world cup final! But I also remember being so thrilled at the way United had fought back with those 2 late goals and I decided then they were going to be my team. Think I made the right choice although for the next 14 years it didn't always seem like it!

Da was a Leeds man, in a family of United men. Fortunately for me, my uncle's got me to Old Trafford, before my da got his finger out and took me to Elland Road. Always been glad he was a lazy bugger.
