I am a little late to the party so I apologise in advance for my tardiness. In regards to last weekends game against Liverpool I must admit I almost switched it off at half time because the game (not just United) was pitiful, good damn pitiful. I have seen Shappy below try to extract the positives (ball retention, control of the footy etc) but I am sorry there is no positives in that type of performance. It was boring, lifeless and an embarrassment to the game and two great clubs.

Second half again I thought it was pretty abject and not fantastic but I am glad we got the first goal because if we didn't I would have been worried and that in itself is the problem with this team. Under Fergie I can honestly say if we went a goal behind or got a man sent off I could remain calm as I knew he would stand up, make the big calls and get his team right back in it, under this regime I get frightened.

My hat goes off once again to Herrera who was outstanding (hopefully LVG had his contacts in to see this also) and to the young unknown No.9 who showed us some natural ability and not robotic tendencies. Quick note on Depay, I feel he has been hugely disappointing up to now. It may be a good idea for him to be protected by the manager and benched for a few matches as he is only a kid and we all know the media will latch on to him soon enough and rip him to shreds should he not instantly improve.

My final and most important point though is this, did anyone else feel like they were just watching a run of the mill game against Liverpool? These games used to give off a certain buzz and excitement, passion would ooze from both sides and tempers would flare. To me it felt boring, flat and did not seem like the big occasion it once was. Maybe that was just me, maybe not.

{Ed007's Note - It wasn't just Saturday's game, every match in the PL is like that now, a bland and boring consumer driven product aimed at getting more and more £ out your pocket and into their product. Fans are seen as customers today and there's far too many just sitting back and accepting it. And no offence but when your supporters entire repertoire of songs and chants is either the mundane 'kicking a blue' or the endless repetition of the George Best/Spirit in the Sky song you can't expect a good atmosphere.
English football sold it's soul for TV money years ago and it's only going to get worse. The PL is like any other global brand like McDonalds or Coca-Cola, if you look at it under the microscope it's full of $hit.
And no matter how many times Terry Henry tells us it's the best league in the world we know he's lying and only saying that because Sly pay him £4 million a year to say it. If as a football pundit he genuinely believes that then he doesn't know enough about football to warrant those wages as a pundit - anyone with the slightest understanding of the game knows the Bundesliga and La Liga are far better leagues than the EPL with a generally much higher standard of football, and the Bundesliga don't treat their fans like idiots when it comes to pricing etc.}

Agree totally with Maze & Ed 007 - the game is run by politicians, the clubs are run by business men with a passion for money over football and the players are robots. Any that step out of line are booted out or put in their place, there is little to no personality left in the domestic game.

Money has ruined the product and the credibility. Press conferences are like watching a politician, pure lies and manipulation with virtually zero fall out when they are found out on their lies - it's just seen as "mind games", no it's lies! There is no credibility anymore, it's all about money and amazingly a lot of people don't see it yet, or simply accept it. Like a bird that dumps you for another guy and keeps coming back for the occasional booty call when she has had a row - pathetic.

The rubbish we see is a direct result of the profit driven machines behind it.

It is gradually getting worse and now the way it is all built is manifesting itself on the pitch. Just because something is repeated ad-nauseam by the media doesn't make it true.

I'm not ashamed to say I am falling out of love with the game, never thought this could happen but enough is enough. I have genuinely been more entertained by Celebrity Big Brother and look forward to watching that more than the football at the minute, (I only did watch this to placate the Mrs as it's good to talk about the psychological stuff, but being honest it has more to offer than the dross we are served up by our club week in and week out - never admit it to her as I get brownie points of course!).

Sorry state of affairs.

{Ed007's Note - I might not go that far although I'll admit Jenna Jameson's butt has got me mesmerised! }

It didn't feel like a derby game at all, for the most part there was no atmosphere and I can't remember any of the players going in hard for tackles. My other sport is rugby league and I'm sorry to say I've been to a few united v liverpool/city matches and the atmosphere just cannot compare to watching my rl club against our local rivals, constant banter between the fans and the atmosphere is incredible, as well as that the passion shown by the players is so much more, I wish football players got as fired up as rl players do at times.

{Ed007's Note - Getting fired up might mess up their hair or the camera might catch them not looking cool enough.}

Careful bond you'll get splinters

{Ed007's Note - Every word of it is true though. English football is dying on it's ar$e and all the Sly money in the world isn't helping, the overall standard of the league is going backwards because the mindset is that throwing money at something will solve the problems when it is actually making it worse.}

Ed, I went to a couple of games recently and also thought the songs were dire. Not a patch on the old ones

All I can say is if you didn't think there was a 'buzz' or 'excitement' you obviously weren't at the ground on Saturday afternoon.

Shocked to the core that Beast was the first person to comment and agree with JMB I must admit.

{Ed007's Note - That's your answer to the other 658,924,269 Utd fans in the world? A full house against Liverpool and you 'had to be there' to get any sense of ANY atmosphere? I'm sure I heard someone in the crowd sneezing through a pitchside mic.
So what happens at the ground, is it a text 10 to text 10 or retweet to retweet 'Kicking a blue or Georgie Best?' every 10 minutes to get the place 'buzzing'? Watch games in Germany (I'd recommend a Dortmund or St Pauli match), look at places like Croatia, Turkey and Russia to see atmosphere at a game. How about this, think you needed to be there to feel the excitement in the air?

There's far too many consumers and day tripping half 'n' half scarfers in the EPL for any atmosphere and if it isn't a worry at Utd why did they need to open a singing section?
Giving stewards a bit of cheek at away grounds and refusing to sit down - it's hardly Ultra material is it?}

My thoughts about the match are this. Rodgers came to defend and counter. Unfortunately for him, he came up against a team that was happy just having the ball at the half line. It was like the cold war.
If you see this match individually it appears like a masterstroke by lvg although its clearly not because that's what we do against any and every team.

I wonder if we are feeling this in particular due to every single player from the last decade (and 90's) have now gone. It didn't feel like there was a single United player on the pitch who knew what that particular fixture meant. With Keane, The Nevilles, Giggs etc, they understood that fixture and were desperate to not use it. I'm not into violence at all, but I miss the days when a fixture meant so much that tensions would boil over.

15 Sep 2015 12:32:15
Beast, big brother is about 5 steps too far lol but on the general view towards modern footy I do agree.

For me, its a mixture of the silly money, the play acting and cheating, a general move towards possession football - all makes it harder to stay in love with the game.

Ed007 I cannot agree with you more mate. I feel the heart is being ripped out of English football and it has been coming for a while now. When was the last time you picked up a Sunday newspaper to read about a game without an article relating to the financial aspect of the game?

All those players on that pitch on Saturday did not love and breathe this rivalry or any other growing up as a kid and it shows big time. I honestly feel at the moment I cannot identify with the manager, the players and the 'philosophy' which is shameful. I look at Giggs solemn on the bench and I feel like an era has come to end and we will never see the likes of it again.

GDS2 what a stupid thing to say. I have watched many, many games home and away, in the UK and abroad, but I have never felt the way about a derby the way I did on Saturday. A lot of folk above have made some very good points. I think you need to open your eyes and your mind a little mate, maybe then you could relate more to what others are saying. As a United fan I am glad I wasn't at that game on Saturday, at least I could pre occupy myself doing other things during that embarrassing first half.

{Ed007's Note - Was one of those things Jenna Jameson's butt?}

I did mention a few months back that United areally losing their identity. In fact, they HAVE lost their identity.
If I start shouting during the match, I'm told to be quiet. How ridiculous is that? There are people going there thinking they're going to the local library! Silence at all times!
In the 70s the team used to come out to the fans singing 2 4 6 8 the reds are great. Now the teams come out and we get loud music that totally drowns the sound of the crowd, then the music stops and the crowd are quiet! Now there's a surprise!
The whole atmosphere feels very clinical, boring and devoid of soul. Everyone laughed at Keano when he mentioned the prawn sandwich brigade, but now 90% of the stadium seems to be prawn sandwich brigade. The owners are never there, the manager and assistants sit on their arses throughout the match and no one seems to show any passion or attack for fear of losing possession and being dropped for 6 months. It is truly pathetic and an insult to the club and to the great players who have graced the red shirt. Gds, think of hughes, neville, Beckham, Cantona, Keane, Schmeichel, Bruce, Robson and the many more and you see the passion. Thus us what gets people off their seats. Now, we have dull spectacle, with zero passion.
I've said this before and will say it again, the management and players and the fan groups need to get together to try to resurrect the old atmosphere before it is lost for good. My concern is we have new generation of supporters coming to matches and thinking this is a normal state of affairs.

Totally agree bond the game died years ago.

You do know jj's ass is full of plastic?

Schmidfield

I said a couple of years ago about the sterility of pre game, the deafening music from an hour before the players walk out so no one can hear nor speak let alone sing. The presenter is poor (bring back Keith Fane) relying on the same process (familiar?) every game. They suddenly switch the loud incessant uninspiring noise off and wonder why no one sings. The presenter needs to earn his money and get the crowd singing, to do that they need to get people to their seats earlier. Our screens are old fashioned just show the score and the presenter blasts us with noise , it needs a new approach

Maybe just rubber, saves time!

15 Sep 2015 16:23:09
If you don't like it why watch it?

15 Sep 2015 13:56:02
Methinks Bond is still upset cause his team got gubbed (love that word) by 10 sheep molesters. Money from the TV companies is not the problem, in itself, Managers fear for their jobs and owners demanding instant success is. There are some fantastically skilled foreign players in the PL but there are a lot more mediocre understandable when any Brit player who can actually tie his own laces is worth £50m.

I'm a United fan and supporter (I live in Scotland so can't get to as many games as I'd like)and so watch quite a few Scottish games. Mostly at Dundee United, St. Johnstone (really good game on Saturday) and Hearts. What a pure revelation Hearts were last year (albeit in the championship) playing youth.

Other than some form of quota system or financial incentive for playing more home grown players I have no answers. We would all love a team of local players like our class of 92 or even more impressive the Celtic team of 67, as my Celtic friends never cease to remind me.

15 Sep 2015 16:32:16
Ed007 I had a season ticket for a few years at FC Basel and have gone and watched them the last few times they played in England. That is an atmosphere to behold, great fans!

{Ed007's Note - I met a crowd of Basel fans a few years back when they were over in Glasgow for a CL qualifier and they were a cracking bunch of lads. Malmo put on some show when Celtic were over there the other week, the place was jumping for the full 90 mins, they could cause a few problems for teams when they're at home in the CL this year, once you see it you'll see why they have such a good home record.
I'm actually very surprised that some Utd fans haven't got together to sort something out, do you think opposition players and supporters 'dread' going to OT these days, the way they done only 10 years ago?
There's far too many people just sitting there stuffing their faces, taking selfies or other stupid pictures to Tweet rather than watch the game and back the team. Look around you at a match and see how many people are sitting on their phone, one of the worst things clubs ever done was install wi-fi for fans, if you want to sit on social media stay in the house and give normal people peace - and if anyone reading this is one of them that sits and does it then give yourself a shake and stop it, you're a pest and we all hate you!
Celtic have been given permission to install a safe standing area in the stadium, we don't sell alcohol in our grounds, that would cause major problems up here, how do you think a safe standing area like that would go down well in the EPL or do you think the stadiums should be kept all-seated?}

15 Sep 2015 17:31:21
Red man. Couldn't agree more. Someone disagrees with us so they might be eating the prawns!
The whole time leading to kick off is badly run and as you say, our screens are so old fashioned.
If you watch B/dortmund you can hear the presenter working with the crowd and the whole ground is on its feet singing before the match.
The United approach has been terrible for years and something has to change. When the teams come out, the opposition team have to hear the noise. It is worth a goal in some instances. Instead, everyone goes quiet and the team invariably start slowly.

15 Sep 2015 19:16:15
Totally agree with you Redman re the loud/brash music, could be a much better build up to the game with a few simple tweaks like those mentioned above.
