All this talk of needing a striker has made me go through all the really top goal scorers around today. We keep seeing the same few names in the media and on here, but to be honest there's not that many out and out, 30 goals a season strikers out there.
I think back to the 90's and all the great strikers like Batistuta, Klinsmann, Shearer, George Weah, Romario, Stoichkov. Then a little later with players like Kluivert, Ronaldo, Inzaghi and Marcelo Salas (remember him).

Van Basten and Batistuta. Also for you older lads , remember the little South American Hugo Sanchez? Used to score with a bicycle kick just about every other game for Madrid.
It seems a strange thing to say , what with to popularity of football worldwide now and the supposed improvement in technical ability and fitness. But thinking back to the names already mentioned here , and also thinking of the great defenders of yesteryear , it really does seem like there is a lack of really top talent in the game at the moment.
Don't get me wrong , there are some very good player with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi etc. But some of the names thrown about now as world class are not in the same class.
Hagi of Romania , Ruud Gullit , Paulo Maldini , Franco Baresi , Cannavaro. The list goes on.
Maybe it's just me looking back with the old rose tinteds , but appart from a handful of the obvious names , there does seem to currently be a lack of talent around. I mean , how many really world class strikers and CB's for example are there around?
Imagine what a difference it would make now if we could sign Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy in their prime.

I agree Betty. We are lucky to have 2 of the greatest, probably THE greatest in Messi and Ronaldo currently playing but I can only think of a handful of really world class players at the moment
{Ed004's Note - Or has the ordinary player improved? This would make it harder to stand out more for players. The amount of technology available today combined with the improved fitness of players would enable the ordinary player to be better equipped to deal with better players. Also I'm not old enough to remember but did many teams park the bus against the top players like Maradona}

Maradona,Batistuta, romario and Van Basten in that order for me. Others that haven't been mentioned, Careca, Crespo, Butragueno, Enzo Francescoli, Zico (although more a no. 10), same for the Laudrup brothers, Rivaldo, Paulo Futre. Good mentions of Hagi and Hugo sanchez who were both fantastic to watch. Just too many to think about.

My personal favourite is Ronaldo (Brazilian). His goal against Compostella is one of my all time favourites. I'm fact his one season with Barca was brilliant.
