Everyone competing with a king want's to knock him off his throne. That is it.

Envy/jealousy is a strong emotion.

Most sensible people don't hate Man Utd as it isn't one individual and what the clubs stands for is success (mostly). We were fortunate enough to have our time when the game was opening up like never before. If we had it during the 80's and Liverpool emerged again in the 90's like we did, Liverpool would be getting a lot more hate, but nobody hates the also rans as much as the dominant force.

Jealousy

Dwill I think we are just hated because we were so much more successful than anyone else over the last few decades. I think other clubs like Chelsea and city are quickly joining the hate train as well.

United is a love or hate relationship. You go into any pub in England when we are playing and regardless of location half will be for United and the other against. We've always been a well supported club, always played good attacking football regardless of results, league position or winning trophies. We are the greatest supported club in the world though because of Munich. It defines who we are as a club. I appreciate there have been significant supporter tragedies at many clubs but no-one else has literally had the heart ripped out of their team with so many players dying at once. The groundswell of affection and love towards United from that tragedy, passed down now through generations, has built the supporter base we have today. And football's tribal nature creates that 'them and us'aspect. An aspect a politically astute manager like Ferguson used to great effect to create that siege mentality: 'you're either with us or against us' to compound it even further.

I love the fact everyone else hates us. Seriously. It just makes me love United more.

halesini makes some good points. Munich defined us and led to huge worldwide sympathy and affection. I don't agree everyone hates us, some teams hate us for specific reasons, Bolton, Liverpool, Leeds. The generic issue from other fans is that United fans are arrogant and look down on other clubs. 'We are the biggest club in the world' is continually rammed down people's throats and we think we are better than everyone else. Not saying I agree but I understand why fans of other clubs don't like us. Even when Liverpool were dominating United still generated lots of headlines and for many, this just seemed odd. As of today, we have been incredibly successful, we have had a Manager who was happy to rub everyone up the wrong way, we have had some 'characters' playing for us and we have dominated.

I love the club and am proud of what we achieved but I sometimes see comments on here that make me cringe and they are not unrepresentative. There are many United fans today who don't know anything other than success and that leads to a particular mindset. the oldies amongst us remember the 70s and also the arrogance of Liverpool fans in the 80s. I guess it's our turn now.

{Ed001's Note - just one thing Halesini missed out, Torino had a similar disaster befall them, the Superga disaster, but never gained the sympathy or media attention in Italy that Man Utd gained. In my opinion that sympathy was not because of it being the heart of the team, it is because of what could have been if it had not happened. It was a young team full of potential, whereas Torino were already champions before the Second World War, then 4 times in a row afterwards, before the disaster. So it was sad, but it didn't give the media what if stories to bring up each anniversary. The what if stories made United the biggest name in English football, but they also caused resentment, as every time you put the news on the first story was Man Utd, even if they were not the team that had won anything. Once you start dominating headlines, everyone else feels marginalised and it becomes an easy target to bitch at, as you constantly see their name. It is the media that creates the hatred more than anything, they put Man Utd up on a pedestal as a target.

Personally I fail to see a reason to hate any football team, it is just a game after all, but some people take it far too seriously.}

if its pure jealously don't u think barc should be the most hated team after all for last decade they just rule the europe but most people have soft side for them . may be it just tat v keep loosing players and still keep winning r its just Epl most watch league in world

Halesini - I think it is a lot more than Munich. It's mainly to do with TV and the money pumped into the PL that has allowed Utd to have its global appeal at the key time. Plus we were massively successful for 2 decades which is a hell of a lot of kids growing up wanting to support the best in a much smaller world because of technology/social media.

By the way have a read about this - 'Superga air disaster', I read about it last year for the first time and had never heard of it before in honesty.

Beast, Munich was a major driver in our worldwide appeal and fan base. I take the point about recent dominance but other fans hated us through the 70s and 80s when we were not successful. Our event success and associated 'arrogance' has probably made things worse

I also think it can be about certain players at the club if u were a child growing up from a non top flight football city like anywhere in the south west or south coast.whiskt they may support their local side they would never run around the playground pretending they were a 3rd division player. Everyone wanted to pretend they were some superstar and we probably had most of them in the 90s and 00s. Giggs, Cantona, Schmeichal, Keane, Cole, Pallister, Hughes, Ronaldo, Beckham, Scholes. I think a player an influence a kid more than a team.

I was going to mention Torino ed, always had a soft spot for them.

Thanks Beast. Agree with AJH though that we were hated / adored long before the 90s onwards success. I too had never heard of the Torino disaster but agree Eds point is Munich denied a great team a golden future.
