Hmm what to talk about.

Midfielder's to replace Carrick.

Again done a bit a research on these players but obviously haven't watched every game they've ever played so if some of my info seems wrong just let me know.

Nainggolan: Seems to have a very high work rate and likes chasing the ball down and getting it back, this twinned with a very nice blonde Mohawk makes him seem quite threatening and i feel he could handle himself in the PL. That's one box ticked. He has a very good range of passing and an 87% average over the season. Compared to Carricks 90%. Although Carrick has played less games. Nainggolan has the best overall Performance score for Roma this season (According to Squawka). His tackling may let him down at times so playing him in front of the back four maybe be a problem. he's fast enough to intercept balls and is quite a force in the air.

Gundogan: a lot like Carrick, Gundogan missed the start of the season through injury. As much as people see him as a replacement for Carrick it confuses me a little bit. Gundogan is a more attacking player and would partner Herrera in the place of Fellaini. But i'll keep him in because he is of genuine interest and people will probably wanna hear. Again Gundogan has a passing average of 85% which is very high, his distribution when it comes to long balls though seems to be a little off (From what I've seen). I personally think he could handle the PL but not in a defensive way. I'd steer clear unless we have the money to burn.

Modric: He is the best in the world at what he does, IMO. He breaks up play, keeps it simple and doesn't try anything he thinks will risk the team. He is technically sound and has a varied range of passing. He has missed the majority of RM Season but when he has played he has a 92% passing accuracy and has done 19 key passes in 16 games. We know he can hack it in the PL and i'd say he would be a safe bet.

Lars Bender: He has never been one to try anything flash and has a good positional sense, allowing him to sit back and invite pressure before stripping the opposition of possession, often with aggression. He tends to go about his game with a sense of fluidity and calmness and has an 81% Tackle completion.Only downfall being he has a 69% pass completion rate. Which isn't what you'd want from a Carrick replacement.

Verratti: Verratti has completed 862 passes this season with a pass accuracy of 92%, of which 72% were forward passes. He played 31 Games in Ligue 1 and played 13 games in the champions league. personally for me he is fit enough to compete in the PL and would be my ideal replacement for Carrick. The guys work rate is unrivalled and he has 7 assists this season.

Vidal: He has a passing accuracy of 85% and has played 33 key passes this season, including 4 assists. He will definitely be strong enough for the PL but my problem would be that i don't think CDM is his best position. he works better further forward when he can directly influence the strikers.

Time for you guys to decide who you think should replace Carrick. I didn't include Pogba because personally i think he would cost wayyyyyy to much and we don't need that kind of money spent on one player.

My pick: Verratti, and if not him then Modric or Nainggolan.

Tell me what i should post next if you want something like this again?

Peace out!

{Ed004's Note - I have only seen Verratti play in champions league games and he always impresses me, however, he always has a defensive minded player such as Thiago Motta beside him and a box to box in Matuidi. Now going by that would he not be a Herrera replacement? I'm not sure he has the physicality to play as a defensive midfielder unless it was in another league such as la Liga or Serie a. He also has a tendency to pick up a lot of bookings (not sure about reds) for being a rash tackler as well. Two names I think you have missed, firstly being Schneiderlin; who comes with premiership experience, very good defensively, honest, hardworking and homegrown. Not as good as Carrick on the ball but possible better defensively and has time to improve. Lastly, the ideal player IMO to replace Carrick but ultimately the most unlikely, Javi Martinez who is the only player I think around who would be an upgrade on Carrick. Also on the Carrick point, surely his replacement has to be a decent height as Carrick is quite useful for set pieces. We have quite a small team atm.}

why do we need a carrick type player.

3 top quality cm will do me

{Ed004's Note - Maybe we don't need a Carrick type player but we need someone to play the number 6 in LvG midfield 3 which Carrick currently does excellently. Ideally we need someone very good defensively to protect the back four, decent in the air (for set pieces) and excellent technically to start attacks from defence and control the tempo of the game. Very few Carrick/Busquets players around}

Ed004, if you look at the way we play, Verratti would be the perfect holding player for us. Our game revolves around possession football, and Carrick's job isn't to break up play, it's to provide an anchor between defence and attack. There would be no point in getting a midfield destroyer in, when our team is set up to funnel everything through the holding midfielder.

The height thing is an issue, but hopefully with a new taller cb alongside Smalling, that will give us a bit more of an edge.

I do think Schneiderlin is a good choice though, and Verratti has almost 0 chance of signing anyway.

{Ed004's Note - I think with a settled back four our style of play will hopefully change a bit next season and become more direct at times as we will be better defensively so more risks can be taken. That is why I suggested players who are better defensively than Veratti - who if signed would be the best passer at the club.}

Ed004, forgot about Schneiderlin but i purposefully missed out Javi Martinez because of his injury record.

{Ed004's Note - I haven't checked his injury record I just assumed this was his first big one. He never relied on pace so don't think it will affect him that much}

Ed004, Who would your ideal CM be for us to sign then?

{Ed004's Note - Javi Martinez, Veratti (but would need a physical cm to complement him IMO) and Schneiderlin/Nainggolan in that order.}

Every time i see Verratti play he reminds me a lot of Scholes, similar size and stature, controls the game, best passer on the pitch and a bit rash when tackling. For dreamings sake, if we got Verratti I think Nainggolan would be his ideal partner, or Vidal someone with a great work rate, likes a good hard tackle and can drive the team forward a bit.

{Ed004's Note - If PSG can get a midfield of Verratti, Pogba and one more (Matuidi) they will have the best midfield in the world}

It would be an incredible midfield ed004. I was thinking are RM interested in Pogba because if were and they got him. Kroos, Modric and Pogba? Game over really.

{Ed004's Note - Is Madrid's midfield defensive enough though? A lot of teams seem to run straight through their midfield.}

I would just add to the Modric comments that he is fantastic at escaping pressure. It sounds like we are coming up with a few types:
(1) technical players that are great on the ball - Modric, Verratti, Gundogan
(2) a few with a more athletic presence to go with their all around ability - Vidal, Nainggolan, and I would add Kondogbia
(3) looks like only Schneiderlin, Martinez as true defensive midfielders.
Maybe LVG's scouting network will surprise us.
