It has become obvious that we are crying out for a Carrick replacement. The question is who?

Do we look for someone who has the same qualities as Carrick or do we look for something different. Do we want a deep lying playmaker who can shield the defence or would it be better to move towards a more traditional defensive midfielder ala Makelele and leave the creative stuff to the guys further forward?

Personally I think we could do with both, it would add some much needed tactical flexibility to the squad.

Gundogan has been mentioned but he would require a more specialist DM along side him as he ventures forward more often than Carrick does which would leave us exposed in the middle. He could work very well with a William Carvalho type player alongside him. But to sign both of those two we are looking at around the 50m mark. Which considering we need to sign a RB, CB, ST and side player makes it unlikely that we can afford to spend so much on the midfield. Maybe De Jong could be a good short term fix.

But I have been watching a player this season which my German friend Markus told me about at the start of the season as someone to keep an eye on. He also pointed out both Gundogan and Reus to me before they moved to Dortmund, as well as Vidal during his first season in the Bundesliga. He also said Kevin Volland would be a world beater but I won't hold that against him. lol.

The player he told me to keep a close eye on was Johannes Geis, so I have this season been watching him and I must say I have been very impressed with him.

He can play as either a DM or as a box to box type midfielder. He is technically excellent, with great technique, he is reasonably strong and quick with a great passing range, his long balls are simply amazing and he is a mean dead ball specialist. His reading of the game is also very good, he makes plenty of tackles and interceptions per game and often vital ones, he is also mature in his decision making knowing when not to dive in and rather just hold the player up until help can come and shut the opposition player off. He isn't yet the finished article, he sometimes goes missing in games and he needs to learn more patience with his passing sometimes trying to force it too much always looking for that defence splitting ball, rather than waiting for the opportune moment. But these are things which come with age and quality coaching.

In my opinion he would be an excellent signing to bring in this summer to work with Carrick to learn from him.

I also watch a lot of German football and think Volland is an excellent player who would be more noticed in a better team with better players. Gets is good but I think he needs to have another full season to see if teams work out how to nullify him. I really do think we need a defensive shield who can pass forward with vision along with a driving box to Box type player

Tielemans!!!

{Ed004's Note - In an ideal and unrealistic world I'd love Javi Martinez}

Ronnie, Tielemans will be an excellent player. He will be much closer to a powerful box to box midfielder ala Yaya Toure when he's fully filled out. Where as we need someone who can sit and dictate the tempo. Beside as good as Tielemans is he isn't ready for the premier league, and certainly not for a team expected to challenge on all fronts. He needs another couple of years to be ready for a team such as ourselves.

Herefordred, I'm not saying Volland isn't a good player, he is just a bit too inconsistant for me. If he can bring a level of consistancy to his game he will be and excellent player. But imo Schurrle is a better player currently.
As for Geis I would like to see us sign a player before the rest of the world becomes fully aware of him amd his price sky rockets. What would have happened if we had that attitude to signing a young Ronaldo? He would have ended up at some other club. Besides I think Geis would learn more playing with us and training daily with the man he will be trying to replace. We can also mould him exactly into the player we need that way As well.

The only player who plays the Carrick role as good as Carrick is Sergio Busquets. Protects the back four through interceptions and intelligence and his passing arsenal is fantastic. In an ideal world though it would be Schneiderlin for me.

Hummels passing range we need a hard man like roy keen to put them in to row z

Although it would be a lot of money i'd want vidal, gundogan and herrera in a midfield 3

Shappy, I've seen you mention Granit Xhaka quite a few times as well. He's a bit of a different player to Carrick in that he can be more physical but I have to agree he'd be a good buy. I also wouldn't mind Luiz Gustavo.

However, I'd say the best fit that's available would be William Carvalho. He is physical but is a very good passer and reader of the game from what I have seen. He'd also be a good addition to our squad as he can play CB. Since Jones, Smalling and Rojo seem to be made of glass.

I have only seen him once but Nainggollan at Roma looked a good player in that type of midfield area. Perhaps those who have seen him more could better assess?

04 May 2015 09:54:27
I've watched Nainggolan quite a few times and he looks like a solid defensive mid, very tough and loves a hard tackle, quick to turn defence into attack. I personally think he's like a more defensive Vidal! Would give us that steel in midfield we've been missing for a long time.

I think Verrati would be Taylor made for us but he has his heart set on going to Juve. He is Ideal. Gundogan is too small and not a good replacement of carsick and will get pushed around.

Shappy, I remember Geis being mentioned last season, was said he "is the anti-cleverly" I think by bleacher report can't be sure though. That was the 1st i heard of him and checked his stats then with a few comments from my Bundesliga loving friends, he sounded like a must-sign player! Although i haven't watched a game of his yet.

You do realise that Verratti is about 5 ft 5" GCU? A wee bit smaller than Gundogan. Anyway we don't necessarily need a physically strong player in the holding role. We need someone with an excellent passing range, who can read the game and has good positional sense. Verratti would be perfect, but looks unlikely. Although Gundogan has a good passing range, he's closer to Herrera than what we need. And a lot of the other players mentioned are classic cdm who won't add much to our current modus operandi.

We need a Pirlo not a De Jong. And personally I think someone like Schniderin or Matudi could do a job for us, but as long as the cdm remains the creative focal point, it's going to be really tricky to find the right player.

@Red Man

Naingollan would be a top addition to the squad. Very powerful and also has great positional discipline. The editor has told us about our interest in him and that we may bid once his ownership issues are resolved.

I think we need two midfielders. One more defensive minded and another who can dictate the tempo and dribble through midfield as well.

Naingollan and Gundogan would be my pick and signing them doesn't look unrealistic at all. A midfield three of Naingollan Gundogan and Herrera would be world class.

If we went for 2 CM's then look no further than Southampton.
Wanyama n Schneiderlin - already know each others game to.

Danny

I know he is not tall but he is strong and quite physical and has great passing range where gundogan is not as physical enough for me.
