So if the murmurs are true and Depay and Gundogan are almost over the finishing line then where does that leave Ange Di Maria? Looking at the squad objectively you would imagine Depay would eventually take Young's berth in the squad and Gundogan would eventually phase out Carrick or alternate with Herrera for a while.

Unlike a few folk on here I cannot see us dropping our most important outfielder in Felliani as he is key to the way we play and with Mata showing his class over the past 4 months then the question is can we really afford to leave ADM on the bench for another season to depreciate?

{Ed004's Note - There is no doubt in my mind that Di Maria will be a much better player next season. I expect Gundogan to replace Fellaini and Di Maria to replace Young. Will leave us with a very strong midfield. I don't see Gundogan replacing Carrick. He has always had a player covering him in midfield such as Bender or Sahin}

I agree with you about Fellaini; I see him as a vital component of our time at the moment and don't understand people's tendency to view him as a squad player. He can be unplayable at times and has to be marked out of the game by the opposition.

Not so sure deals for Depay and Gundogan are truly that certain?? It seems every summer most people on here have nailed on a few signings just because we have been heavily linked in the media but that's not always the case. I think Depay would be a quality signing and although Gundogan is the type of midfielder we need, I'm worried about how well he's recovered since his injury.

Lastly, with injuries to consider and the added games of cup competitions next season, I don't really see a problem with having hypothetical attacking midfield options of Di Maria, Mata, Januzaj, Young, and Depay next season.

It's a squad game and they will all fit nicely into the big squad needed so that champions league football doesn't affect the league form. You really need two top players in every position to compete on all fronts and that is where we are heading.

I don't think hitting those balls up to Fellaini is the philosophy LVG has, I think it is just what was required at the time with the players we have. look what happened when we came up against Mourinho he simply nullified him. That will happen time and again now if we play that style every game. I think LVG wants to move away from that with a more fluid system, look back at any of his sides and he's never adopted that tactic before. However it is a useful style for certain teams and at certain times during games so it's a good option to have. If in champs league next season we will need more versatility from our squad. Also look what happens if we pick up one or two injuries or some suspensions we are left playing Rooney in midfield and he is not a midfielder. As long as LVG can get everyone a game a keep the players happy the more top players at the clubs disposal the better.

At the risk of repeating myself I'm not understanding the pedestal some put Fellaini on. He was improved greatly and in some games has been excellent but I don't think he has been more important than Carrick, Mata, Hererra, and even Young. Not trying to dis Fellaini but let's keep him in perspective

Agree witH AJH, it's not so long ago we was all calling for fellaini to be sold. A handfull of good games doesn't make him our most important player in my eyes. That's not to say I'm not happy with how he is playing, but I'd rather see him do it for a longer period of time before I class him as undroppable.

AJH,

I agree, think some people are saying the only reason we are doing well is because of Fellaini so they can say the philosophy is just long ball up to him when it really isn't that at all.

Fellaini has been much improved and did a wonderful job on toure, but like you say, there are other players who have been just as important over the last few weeks.

I disagree completely lads. I feel that if you took Felliani and De Gea out our squad this season our points tally would be very different. It's a team game but individuals do make a difference in big moments. Of course maybe I am being biased due to the fact I like both those players but surely there are folk who would agree with that statement both United fans and neutrals.

I'm guessing you would expect Depay to take Mata's role at the moment then Ed004? I disagree about Felliani though, I don't think he will be replaced for next season as I feel that LVG see's him as a valuable part of the first 11. Of course just my opinion but it will be intresting to see what happens.

{Ed004's Note - No. I expect him to start in the bench and earn his position. He will get plenty of game time however. Couldn't break up that Mata and Herrera link}

Its a team game but important individuals do contribute more than others. That's always been the case. If fellaini was not there, then I'm sure someone else would have done a job in his place. So the whole argument is hypothetical.
I think we're all delighted that fellaini has started playing well. I could not see that happening. And I'm delighted for him.

Who could have done what Felliani has done for us this year Nomid?

26 Apr 2015 17:30:28
Felliani will only be a squad player imo next season a good plan b. I'm hoping we get a world class box to box midfielder in the summer.
