For GDS2 and the numerous others picking out my "choice" posting times.

I missed the Villa game, but I posted a lot after Liverpool & Spurs and managed to get a connection for City, so I did post but not as frequently as normal.

I am actually in Switzerland now so have much better internet access. I have posted several times praising the manager and the team, there isn't too much to be debated when we are playing good attacking football, we have been patting ourselves on the back and I have responded to the numerous "I told you so" posts.

Since Spurs we have been great, but yesterday was a return to pre-Spurs, I always said that whether we played Burnley or Real Madrid you would get the same type of performance from us, which is exactly what we got yesterday - lots of possession virtually no chances.

There are only so many times you can say "we are doing everything I would hope we would" and frankly I had nothing to bitch about for the past month. Now is the interesting time to post and read because there is something to debate surely? This wouldn't be much of a website if everybody just typed "we are doing great".

I think the gaffer could have been smarter yesterday, but to lose away at Chelsea isn't a disgrace on paper - they set-up to hopefully sneak a goal and not concede, we played into their hands and should have been far more creative, moving Mata central against their two lanky midfielders would have been smart, not moving Rooney and injecting some pace with ADM.

But I will just chalk yesterday up to experience and cementing the fact Rooney isn't a midfielder and we need an anchor man to replace Carrick desperately in the summer.

We did play well yesterday with numerous key injuries. But the reason we didn't create many chances at goal was obviously due to Chelsea parking the bus, how can you get through a wall of midfielders and defenders with 1 aim and that's not concede?
You can't cross because the keepers 7ft and catches everything, I thought we did well to create what we did, we just didn't finish them ala rooney and falcao chances.

No doubt it was difficult FZZ, but we suffered from the usual problem when Rooney plays deep. Only one man in the box, Fellaini wasn't even getting in there so there was a total lack of movement in the final third, I lost count how many times Fellaini had the ball out wide to cross it to Falcao and maybe Mata?!

Although he has been very poor the game was crying out for ADM to commit men and therefore open space for the other players to operate in. Rooney wasn't working out, we had no plan B and it was obvious what we needed to do as soon as we realised the Fellaini plan wasn't working.

I don't think it is acceptable to say "what could we do", when we didn't try to mix things up. Chelsea posed a limited threat, so we could afford to change things, the lack of flexibility was one of the key things I was hammering LVG for during the season and yesterday was another example of him refusing to adjust things and us going down with a whimper attacking wise.

Opportunity missed for me, despite Chelsea being masters at parking the bus. I just expected a bit more from us considering our confidence and obvious strategy Chelsea were deploying.

{Ed004's Note - I think we were just unfortunate yesterday. They scored with their first chance and we didn't take any of ours (on another day we would have because we have been usually clinical all season). In saying that I don't think Rooney offered us very much yesterday. At one stage I was hoping either Fellaini or Rooney was dropped into were Herrera was playing just so we could get Mata and Herrera combining. I can't remember any decent link up play between Rooney, Mata and Valencia. That should have been our plan B. I also think Di Maria should have came on in a central position and kept Young out wide. Would have effectively taken Zouma out of the game as even Fellaini turned him once or twice. Hindsight is wonderful isn't it.}

I know it's frustrating beast but look at all the positives we dominated the soon to be champs and should have taken at least a point from the bridge. Next year I think teams will fear us once again and with a couple of good buy's we will have to many options for teams to deal with! I think that zouma keeping tabs on felainy and Mata and Rooney in each others position lost us the game. I too don't see the sense in putting Rooney back in midfield maybe lvg thought Mata would get bullied? I would have liked to see rvp play for 30 mins with falcao and gone 442

{Ed004's Note - I was hoping Di Maria came on for Falcao we pushed Rooney up top, played Fellaini at the base of the midfield and let Herrera and Di Maria play ahead of him. Maybe Rvp for Rooney as he wasn't offering much but that might have changed if he was playing as the striker. I can understand why Shaw was taken off but he was fantastic yesterday. Probably 2nd best player on the pitch behind Hazard}

Definitely right guys, it shows how far we have come as 2 months ago every neutral and a lot of us would have thought we would get smashed at the Bridge, certainly not dominated the ball as we did. We have shown we can control games, hopefully this summer we will ensure we have enough cover to make up for injuries in key positions and also work on breaking teams down.

Next season I think we will have a lot more scenarios where we have to break teams down who park the bus, the fear factor is coming back.

Just a shame we couldn't adapt as the game developed, but I am in a different place to where I was pre-Spurs positivity wise. We didn't link well yesterday as Ed 004 says, but there are a lot of positives to take from this squad and if LVG finally learns to stop sacrificing Rooney (and the rest of the team as a result) we can only improve.

I agree Rooney needs to stop playing in midfield, hopefully a decent transfer window will prevent that happening in the future.

We lose 1 game and the criticism starts.

19 Apr 2015 14:39:47
SPB the criticism is very much constructive not subjective.

We were unlucky, we hardly slipped back to what we were like before the Spurs game. We created more chances than Chelsea, Falcao hitting the woodwork too if you remember? 600 odd passes to Chelsea's 200 with a higher pass completion rate and less long balls than them too so I think you're way off saying that.

If we had Carrick in midfield we would have probably have won with Rooney pushing forward. ADM was useless when he came on, worst I've seen him play for us gave the ball away countless times and never really looked all that bothered.

Had Rooney scored early it would have been a very different game. Chelsea would have had to have shown some attacking intent. As it was, in a game like that you would expect the chances to be few and far between, and who wins pretty much always depends on a) who finishes their opportunities and/or b) refereeing decisions. Chelsea got the rub of the green yesterday because they had the most clinical finisher, and 2 decisions which could have gone the other way were decided in their favour.

And speaking of opportunities, Falcao no doubt had his final one yesterday. He not only missed his golden chance but his failure to protect the ball led to Chelsea's goal. His performances have surely been one of the most disappointing aspects of our season given the hype when he was acquired.

I noticed Rooney was playing what I would call a "Strikers Pass" from Midfield a couple of times and lost us the ball in either good or stupid areas of the pitch. By a "Strikers Pass" i mean little flicks which a striker or an attacker would often try in order to make something happen out of nothing, but you can't be attempting them in midfield, and it cost us at times.

Anyone else notice this?

Sure did Mpez, he and Herrera on totally different wave lengths all game.

No criticism required (constructive or not) Rooney played there because our other 2 options were injured, end of story
