I've been seeing posts creeping up over the last few weeks in regards to Rooney's high wages which I personally believe is ridiculous. I have no idea why people continually bang on about Wayne's wage because he has shown us loyalty, won us silverware and the lad has been committed to the cause from day one.

Why should he watch foreign players come to the club like Di Maria, Mata, RVP, Falcao etc pick up bigger wages than him when he has proven himself at the theatre year after year? Many players have come and gone since Rooney joined our club and he has had offers to move on yet he is still busting a gut out on the pitch for us eleven years on.

I know there are plenty of 'Rooney haters' out there but for me the lad has proven every bit worth the investment in him and is still performing as one of the best in our team even though he is being constantly played out of position. Why shouldn't he have asked for a pay rise when he did? Hell I would have done the same if I were him. Why should he watch players who don't give half as much as he does for other clubs pick up bigger pay checks than he does?

Regardless if he hits peak form or not again I believe he must be considered a club legend for his service over the years (I'm sure folk will dispute that as well). I for one have enjoyed watching him at Old Trafford.

Rooney isn't as good as he was, he's not a midfielder.

Hes not made of milk that he can't do no wrong, he's questioned the club twice.

Although he is one of our better players at the moment, i just think we missed the trick last year we shouod have sold Rooney when fergie said he wanted to leave.

Rooney should play as a striker or no 10, i don't pay too much attention to how much they get paid but he should still be giving more to the team then just wholehearted performance .

There is no point running around the pitch and working hard if there isn't no end result .

26 Feb 2015 14:35:24
rooneys our best payer and has been since ronaldo left, i don't get all the hate on him, he hasn't asked to play in midfield.

but he's better playing in midfield than some of our actual midfielders.

I have no problem with somebody trying to earn as much as they can. If somebody is willing to pay it then fair enough.

My only problem with Rooney is that he isn't as great a footballer as the media or some fans would have us believe, if he wasn't English he wouldn't be where he is today. Since 2011 he has not been a great performer.

A good player, but I would pick 20-30 strikers over him, 2000 midfielders.

That's my only gripe. We don't really know what happens behind the scenes and what is down to the agent, the manager and the player. But he isn't worth what he is paid for me and certainly invariably has 5 bad games for every decent one.

Somebody who is on 300'000 grand a week should be putting in far better performances than he does.People saying he's our best player we'll that's not hard with the dross we've been serving up for 4 years. He should of gone the first time he questioned our club to get a massive rise.Hes been decidedly average now for way too long. When was the last time he was truly outstanding. who say he's been loyal, if he hadn't of got his pay rise he would of jumped ship.So many people are now accepting mediocrity

{Ed007's Note - Is Rooney the only Utd player to ever have asked for a pay rise or used another club's interest to got one?}

26 Feb 2015 15:33:05
At some point people are going to have to accept that football has changed. Club loyalty, playing for the badge etc are relics of a bygone era that clubs and players use only when it's in their benefit. We live in an era when clubs are primarily owned by those interested in profits, and players are primarily concerned with how much money they can make. This is football today and nobody can blame Rooney, or Di Maria, or anyone else for trying to make as much as possible when the club is trying to do the exact same thing.

Ed002 rightly calls players transient employees, they aren't tied to a single club, they can try to leave at any time and they are worth exactly what a club is willing to pay them. Whether or not Rooney does enough to convince the supporters that he is worth his weekly wage is beside the point, he asked for a massive wage and the club gave it to him because they believed that doing so was in the benefit of their interests.

Rooney has been at the club 10 years now, that's a good spell in the modern game .

JMB,

Just a quick question regarding a part of your OP :

"proven himself at the theatre year after year?"

Is young Mr Rooney moonlighting in "Shrek The Musical"?
Surely he doesn't need the cash that bad :)

26 Feb 2015 18:19:11
I miss the Rooney debates.

26 Feb 2015 18:39:21
5 bad games for a decent one? Beast mate, your penchant for the hyperbole!!!

Deeps.

26 Feb 2015 18:17:30
Bond I guess you mean Keane. Difference is Keane put in great performances before during and after.

And he didn't threaten to go city either.

26 Feb 2015 19:34:35
Mre
Ferdinand? Who done it just after an 8 month ban.
Kean as u say .
Robson to juve.
The list goes on and on .

Pink - I know the Rooney thing is a bone you and I fight over, but to be honest he has only stood out in one game for me this season Newcastle. He did ok against Preston as well, aside from that he has either not played well or been plain average this season.

I admit last season first few months he was superb, however 1 good game in 5 is perhaps being too generous over the past 18 months all in all.

I do like him, just not what he was or indeed as crucial as made out to be by a few.

26 Feb 2015 21:15:50
He's our Gerrard. Only two players in world football good enough to have the team revolve around them, Messi and Ronaldo and even then there is trouble. Gerrard was indespensable in ostensibly an upper midtable side. Rooneys role and value to the club though he has been a great servant is almost as obcenely overinflated as his salary. I think our front 3 are on around the same money as Barcas maybe a little more. That represents bad business on every level possible, including ffp.

26 Feb 2015 21:32:12
When did "Rooney" threaten to go to City? Or is it selective bits of tabloid we would like to believe to suit our agenda? The list is endless but we have done it pointless and endless number of times. Rio, Keane, Cristiano, Vidic, Evra and Sir Alex! Or may be Rooney is a scouser?

Deeps.

26 Feb 2015 23:10:38
Funnily enough, isn't Rooney due a testimonial soon?

26 Feb 2015 23:25:36
I'm sorry but I just find it so ridiculously stupid hating on a guy that is likely to be our clubs all time top goal scorer by the time he leaves/retires. Don't really need to add anything else.

27 Feb 2015 04:34:38
Deeps

Rooney's camp had a deal with City the first time he asked to leave. I know of that with a very high degree of certainty and it did not come from the tabloids:) BTW I don't agree with what people are saying but it is frustrating time for us at the moment and i can see why people are looking to vent their anger at various characters.

Mine are solely focused on Mr. LVG as he is the king culprit for this mess :) I hope he proves me very very wrong and gets this team to show its quality in the run it.

27 Feb 2015 10:30:04
The trouble with LVG is that is first season is invariably his best with his 2nd turning into a nightmare.

27 Feb 2015 17:10:49
Partdingle - you have put the fear of God in me with that very accurate point!
