So what's everyone's thoughts on the LVG back pass comments?

Scholes always went out of his way to make room and look for the ball because we had him as an outlet we very rarely had to play backward. I'd be interested to see have we played less back passes since we started playing Herrera?

Are we doing it because of the ability of our defenders not being composed enough to pick a pass? Or Is it down to the movement of our Midfielders?

Personally our defenders lack confidence don't want to lose the ball and be caught out of position and be responsible for conceding. Better movement from our midfield will open up better gaps. Which is why I think a Blind Herrera and Mata midfield would help.

It seems more psychological than ability They seemed to cop on when the crowd booed for the backpass

Complete sense from lvg. But I think it is down to formation. With 3 cbs the "spare man" will naturally be in the centre of defence if not the wingbacks. Where as a different formation such as a (not trying to get bogged down by formations) 433 or a 4231 the "spare man/player" would be in a fullback position or in the centre of midfield or even one of the wingers which would possibly make those formations better for moving the ball forward quickly but hey I'm no expert. Just my opinion.

I totally agree that in order to keep the ball sometimes you have to play it back and build again.

In my eyes LVG is trying to place a Barcelona style philosophy on us where possession is important and goals are made either through incisive passes or we break teams down and score later in games as we always have the ball which tires the opposition out.

I see no problem with using the goalkeeper, but in the previous game against Sunderland it was annoying when we took a corner, it was cleared with everyone still forward and the ball came to Evans who instead of lumping it into the box he passed it back to De Gea and the attack was over.
