Looks a bit like we are trying to recreate the team SAF had at the start of his sucess, looking at a young UK player core with a few low profile European additions. This worked in the 90s, but football has moved on a lot since the 90s.

I disagree. Look at Bayern, Juventus and Barca. All built on a core of players from their respective nations. Look at the players Bayern are signing. Not massive superstars but players who are good with a lot of potential. Similarly Madrid with Jovic, Mendy and Militao. Liverpool haven't exactly gone the superstar route either.

We're an English club but we're overfilled with mercenaries who don't care. People may sniff at the likes of McTominay, James or Longstaff but they'd put in more effort than some have been.

Maybe without champions league football and a well renowned manager (doesnt mean he won't do well), we are finding it hard to attract players.

That might well be a blessing in disguise.

Liverpool fan in peace here. From an outside view, I think any sort of actual plan is a start and you guys need one. Pretty much the whole squad is stagnant and a fresh ethos is needed. The idea of buying young, British players who will want to stay with you for the long haul rather than primadonnas chasing paycheques is definitely more of a long term plan but build a solid core and add the sparks around it as time goes on and who knows where you’ll be in a few years. It’s not meant to sound as patronising as it probably comes across, but sometimes it’s better to knock the house down and start again than to paper over the cracks. Good luck, you’re going to need it!

Agree with you red tbh. Liverpool are a good example, not too many years ago to had issues but built the right way and look at you now.

Mort

Is this the same Real that just splashed mega millions on Hazard in his prime or Barcelona who have splurged on many occasions recently from Suarez to Coutinho? Throw a Vidal in here or a De Jong there. Or are you making the point about Juve who who have purchased many huge names over recent seasons including a 33 year old Ronaldo to keep them on top? I will give you Bayern but even then the players the bring in are usually of substantial reputation and costly.

Fact is McTom (who I like), Longstaff and James will not win the league.

As for Liverpool would you not agree mega millions spent on the likes of Allison, VVD, Firmino, Salah, Fabinho, AOC etc as significant?

I'm not saying they haven't spent mega money. My point was they've got the core squad in place first then add to it. We lack the core squad.

Madrid will always sign superstars. They're ran by an egomaniac and the fans are spoilt brats. Just look at the Hazard presentation with the Mbappe chants. Disgrace. But Zidanes also been chasing targets that aren't superstars.

You mention Coutinho. How'd that work out? I think Barcelona are going to have trouble in a few years actually.

Juventus signed Ronaldo to win the champions league not keep them on top in a serie a they utterly dominate.

{Ed002's Note - Madrid wants to buy Mbappe as well as part of a complete rebuild - and they have a lot of players available to be sold or exchanged. Juventus and Barcelona are rebuilding as well - and Bayern Munich.}

I get there all rebuilding it's how they are doing it. There are different approaches and we as a club need to find one that suits us.

Mort I think you have to take into consideration that Spanish and German players are generally of a higher quality than English players.

There’s only really Kane and Sterling who would walk into any other nations side right now, and we won’t be signing either of them. Our days of cherry picking the best players in the PL are long gone. It’s much easier for Bayern, Juve, RM and Barcelona to do that.
