Hearing Jose talk about how united used to be able other top teams best players and now are unable to do so due to those teams being so powerful now, he used spurs as the example.
He's right of course, we would just go ahead and cherry pick the best from rival clubs and now clubs don't need to sell.
Have we have been comparing this post Fergie United to an incomparable time?

Fergie did not spend 400mn in 3 seasons ever. Also which of the spurs players did we ever target that Mourinho could not sign because spurs wouldn't sell to us. This is another Don't blame me because I wasn't given a new shiny toy.

In July 2017 we signed evertons best player.

In January 2018 we signed arsenals best player.

Tottenham are above us, have they cherry picked the best from rival clubs? no

Although Liverpool have bought southampton players at will you can hardly call them a rival club, they are above us.

The only thing that is incomparable to fergies time at united is the disparity between 6 clubs and the other 14, when he was in charge it used to be a top 4 and 16 other clubs. Even earlier it was just united and arsenal at times.

No denying the top end of the league is much more competitive and city have a freakish combination of top quality recruitment, coaching and resources. Fair enough mourinho can not compete with them.

But we are severely underperforming from last season let alone 'Fergie United', that has less to do with our ability to cherry pick from rival clubs and more to do with mourinhos negative attitude at the beginning of pre season and his inability to pick a consistent team because he's taken turns in falling out with the majority of players at the club.

It is a moyes level of excuse and they have been getting more frequent this season, it is getting embarrassing from mourinho to be honest.

This 400 million in 3 seasons stick to beat Jose. That's 3 Coutinhos. In a world where Liverpool are spending 170 million in one window and pep has spent nearly 350 million on defenders alone, why is it a problem that he's spent money on a team that has been woefully handled over the last 10 years.

We should be spending more than that in terms of our revenue we bring in.

Mumbles we wouldn't be in this position if money he spent was spent wisely. Everytime anyone brings in Mourinho's spending people point to Pep's, but how many of Guardiola's signings haven't worked out. Nolito, Bravo and Mendy that too is a stretch. On the other hand which of Mourinho's signings have worked, barring zlatan there isn't 1 player he has signed yet who anyone can say has turned out to be a fantastic signing.

I wouldn't give Mourinho a dime given his record not that he can really do anything with it given by their own admission even likes of perisic don't want to play for him.

The point he was making is that for the most part clubs that used to be mainly dependent on selling their best players In order to balance the books. Now they don't have to do that anymore. This is due to huge incomes for all the epl clubs from tv sponsorship advertising etc.
Of course clubs will still sell their best players but for hugely inflated fees.
So in that respect he is correct the smaller clubs have become more powerful and a lot more wealthy.

If the tv money was distributed as evenly in spain or italy there would be less dominance by the usual suspects I those league's too.
Its not just a question of liverpool united or city knocking on the door and the likes of spurs caving in or Southampton or Leicester . Look how long it took and eventually how much it cost to sign vvd or city mahrez . Those clubs don't have to sell their best players to survive anymore.
This the point he was making. Its true.
