Milinkovic-Savic does look a top young prospect, however I think his game is very similar to Pogba's and I wonder if having two similar players in midfield will work.

England never managed to get Gerrard and Lampard to work successfully together.

If we are to spend 80-100m on one player in the summer then for me it absolutely has to be Joshua Kimmich. He is going to be the best and possibly the most underrated world class midfielder over the next decade. He reads the game so well, works so hard and has such amazing technical ability. Bayern really are wasting their best midfielder by playing him at RB imo.
However, he is that good that he is able to be one of the best RB's in the world even though that isn't his best position. I'd happily test the water with Bayern for him this summer, if we could get him it would send out a message across Europe by signing one of the big boys best young players.

In a 4-3-3, don't really see a problem.

Underrated like Carrick you mean? @beast.

DSG, even in a three man midfield you don't want two players with the same skill set trying to play the same way.

SMS or Pogba would have to check what the other one is doing at all time s to make sure they don't make the decision runs, or move into the same space. Otherwise they'll be tripping over each other or leaving too much space in behind them.

Neither would be able to just play their natural game as they will always have to keep checking themselves compared to what the other one is doing.

No top team that has won any major trophies has done so with two players in the same area of the pitch trying to play the same game.

You don't play with two sweeper style centre backs or two front foot defenders. You have one centre back who'll attack the treat and the second one will sweep up behind them.

You don't play with two target men strikers or two off the shoulder strikers, if you have a strike partnership you have one target man and one off the shoulder striker.

In midfield you don't have two similarly offensive or defensive midfielders as it is restrictive to the tactics and the natural game of the the players.

That's why we never really saw Scholes and Cantona playing in the same areas of the pitch as there natural game would have got in each others way. Meaning neither would have been fully effective.

SMS is a two year younger version of Pogba. I don't think its sensible to be signing another player for 100m who plays in the exact same way as a player we paid 90m for a season ago.

If you look at three man midfields they tend to work in the we way.

One player sits deep, they either dictate the play with their passing or they shield the back four and cover the full backs. Moving horizontally across the pitch but never venturing much beyond the half way line.

The second midfielder will depend on what kind the first one is. If you have a creative deep lying playmaker then the second tends to be a busy destroyer charging around disrupting the opposition and making simple passes to more creative midfielders to start attacks. If you have a shielding midfielder as your first midfielder then the second will still be very active moving around but they will be more creative and starting off attacks from deep will normally start with them.

The final part of a three man midfield tends to be a more defensive No.10 type player. Someone who links the midfield with the forward line, and pitches in with goals and assists.

So the standard midfield set up for a midfield three should contain someone to dictate the pace of the games, someone to do the defensive work and someone to link the midfield with the forward line.

Both Pogba and SMS ideally play as the link man. Both could also play as the deeper playmaker although when they do you lose key elements of their game which makes them less effective players. We can see the difference between Pogba this year and last where he had more defensive responsibilities and less freedom and how last year he was considered an expensive flop and this year THE key player in our side.

I don't see any point in signing SMS then every year one of him or Pogba would have to play in a restrictive way which would just bring bad press on them and pressure from fans and the media.

I see your point snappy but don’t city play with two very similar players in silva and De Bruyne in midfield with Fernandinho anchoring. On paper you would think it wouldn’t work but they have proved everyone wrong this year. Now I understand it has got a lot to do with pep’s style of play but I do think SMS and Pogba can play together. SMS would have to adapt himself as the more defensive of the two being the fool for pogba to get forward and showcase his attacking abilities. It’s a good problem to have for Jose if we sign him.

For me we should try and get either Vidal to add some power and drive to play alongside Pogba with Matic behind (he us more cultured than people give him credit for) . Or we try to get Ozil who would be the attacking link with Pogba alongside Matic adding the drive.

I think we either need someone to add real energy to our midfield or a cultured playmaker who can control the game in a similar way to Carrick. Ideally if we can find someone who does both then excellent, but I don't think that player is Milinkovic-Savic. Who I rate very highly btw.

I can see either Weigl or Serri coming in. With McTominay and TMS getting games.

Or even TFM.

I could see us moving for Ozil as well.

I would play him next to Matic and move Pogba further forward and give him total freedom.

Pogba and Sanchez total freedom?
I think Sanchez will be the creative force in the last 3rd.

Matic and Savic or who ever they buy as the two holding midfielders. Martial, Pogba and Sanchez as the three behind Lukaku.

In some games I see him going witj 3 in midfield and others with 2 and a 10 like jessie has been playing.
Savic looks a real talent I can see him and pogba playing well together. But a tempo setter like kroos would be ideal imo.

Mort I would be happy with that to be honest. Herrera is also there and fellaini might yet stay. Only if fellaini or herrera leave we would sign 2.

With the way mourinho likes to set up in some games, wouldn't it be ideal to have pogba and another player like Savic breaking forward once we win the ball to add numbers to our attack? I think it can work having to similar players like pogba in a 3 man midfield, just means that matic will have to shield the back d4 a little more and not get forward as much, if Savic does come in, I'm sure they will work it out between them.

We will need at least 2 midfielders in the summer. I think Mata will go and possibly the Wig aswell as Carrick . Seri and Savic should be added aswell as bringing back TFM and Pereira 🎂😆.
