News surfacing that a deal for Vermaelen has been agreed? Good deal or not? Also looks as though Shaw will have to force through the move as it is clear we will not pay what Southampton want - Blind touted as the alternative.

1.) 16 Jun 2014
I hope that's true. He would be superb for us.

2.) 16 Jun 2014
Bit of an underwhelming signing .!

3.) 16 Jun 2014
Class defender WHEN fit, that's my only concern but his price should be very low for someone of his quality, I think I'm right in saying he only has a year left on his contract.

4.) 16 Jun 2014
As far as I am aware there hasn't been a signing. Where does it say TV has signed for MU?

5.) 16 Jun 2014
A newspaper ran the story that we have an agreement in principal with the player Sydney, but we haven't agreed a price with Arsenal yet.

6.) 16 Jun 2014
This is a rehashed story from about a month ago although it could happen as it is more of a likely one than the usual exotic rumours

Fact is I think no one knows what is happening and they make stuff up

7.) 16 Jun 2014
If we sign Vermaelen then that will be one issue dealt with. He would cost less than £10m. Vermaelen and Hummels wouldn't be bad, although Hummels will be difficult.

8.) 16 Jun 2014
The deal has apparently been agreed with Vermaelen, 100k per week. He is in the last year of his deal so I suspect a fee of around £10m - £15m will be agreed on. He is a classy defender when fit, hopefully we can manage him properly. Also cover for left back.

9.) 16 Jun 2014
If this move does go ahead I can see it having some bearing on the next center back we bring in. I imagine that Vermaelen would start in the left center back birth, who starts in the right? That is Smalling and Jones most comfortable side, but will LVG trust them or go for de Vrij who is more comfortable that side also? Can't see Martins Indi as he is another left sided center back.

10.) 16 Jun 2014
More media bull. Until the club announces signings, I won't hold my breath over any so called "done deal".

11.) 16 Jun 2014
Fresh, TV cannot get a game ahead of Mertesacher and Koscielny, so don't big him up too much. Anything between £5m-£8m would be okay considering he will be on high wages, if we paid £15m then I'd be p1ssed off, for an extra bit we could get Hummels or someone of that ilk. TV in his prime wasn't worth £15m. Arsenal only paid around £7m-£9m for him at 23.

12.) 16 Jun 2014
Sydney it is on many pages on the internet regarding a £10m fee being agreed and a contract being worth £100k a week.

13.) 16 Jun 2014
Think it would be a great signing for the right price.

14.) 16 Jun 2014

16.) 16 Jun 2014
Sydney, can't say that I rate Mertesacker or Koscielny. Vermaelen is a very good ball playing center back. Just because AW rates the other two higher is not important - many managers have different opinions and I would say that Vermaelen is there best defender.

17.) 16 Jun 2014
People need to look at the overall package before determining if £10m is "Cheap".

18.) 16 Jun 2014
Would be a good deal if we can get the best out of him. He definitely is a top defender on his day.

19.) 16 Jun 2014
Oh - just wanted to say that I have read several articles and there does seem to be some legs to this story, instead of the recycled bull from the media.

Does seem like LVG signing, and apparently has the same agent as RVP.

Could well be true.

20.) 16 Jun 2014
£10 million is a good price and the quoted 90-100k per week is a decent deal too - that will replace Vidic / Ferdinand's wage. It's a very good and smart move.

21.) 16 Jun 2014
£10m is top end. He will want a sizable signing on fee and a sizable salary. £10m plus £100k a week wages is not cheap. Especially seems he's injury prone and not the player he used to be.

Is he better than Mertesacker and Koscielny? His positioning is very poor compared to PM. He doesn't have the height either. Koscielny is better than Vermaelen in every department.

If Vermaelen is it, then we are in trouble. We need a proven top notch CB, Vermaelen is not that.

22.) 16 Jun 2014
I know it doesn't particularly mean anything but they have suspended betting on him joining us.

Adds fuel to the fire I suppose

23.) 16 Jun 2014
Perfect signing. Fitness a doubt, but same with most centre backs and frankly with Smalling Jones & Evans in reserve and a class one to come we should be fine. Maybe no need to buy another CB until next summer when back in CL.

One more year to see if Smalling and Jones can command a starting place is sensible for me.

24.) 16 Jun 2014
No doubt he will sign, he shares the same agent as RvP & LvG and he is a ball playing CB which is what we need. He would be a good signing as long as we went for someone like Hummels too and didn't pay over the odds for TV.

25.) 16 Jun 2014
I couldn't disagree more Sydney! He will be a leader at the back, is very good on the ball and could fit nicely into a 5-3-2 if LVG adopted that with us. He has many attributes that LVG will like and he has worked with him before. If LVG can make Vlaar look like a world beater then what can he make Vermaelen look like.

26.) 16 Jun 2014
I think if we were going to sign Titus Bramble some people would try and put a positive spin on it.

We would be no stronger than last season as Vidic is a better player. I think Rio isn't far off TV.

27.) 16 Jun 2014
The question is can we get better than Vermaelen? By better I mean either Hummels, Mangala, Mirandha or Garay because I do not see the point in signing one these players and Vermaelen.

The chances are probably not and in my opinion he is of equal quality to other targets we have been reportedly looking at such as Indi, De Vrij and Moreno.

You never know if he is signed and told he is to be the leader of the backline and he gets some confidence and composure back he may well be a good signing, but another injury prone centre half is a worrying thought!

28.) 16 Jun 2014
Sydney who would you recommend for £10m or less as you seem to think there is a superstar waiting at that price.

29.) 16 Jun 2014
That's right Melwing. Its all very well and good saying £10 million more and you have Hummels, but is he available? Does van Gaal want to blow £30 million on someone like Mangala? Vermaelen is a safe bet and fits his criteria.

30.) 16 Jun 2014
Mel, Fresh, I wouldn't buy cheap, we are Manchester United. We should be paying top dollar for a WC CB to replace Ex-WC CB's.

31.) 16 Jun 2014
And who is available Sydney that is better and that we could get ahead of say, Chelsea?

32.) 16 Jun 2014
Syd, perhaps these world class players you speak of aren't available or not interested in a move to us. I don't see this being a bad deal.

33.) 16 Jun 2014
Discount, I never said it would be a bad deal. If you would be happy with TV after heavy discussions with Hummels, then that's up to you. I would be very disappointed though.

Fresh, I would pay whatever it takes to bring Hummels to Manchester United. If a move wasn't possible then there wouldn't have been talks being held. It seems MU have baulked at yet another price.

34.) 16 Jun 2014
Where has it said that we have held discussions with hummels representatives?

35.) 16 Jun 2014
Try and keep up Dave mate. MU were holding talks with BvB for a few weeks. Which looks like it's amounted to nothing as per usual. Hummels to Vermaelen, now you can see why I would be disappointed. It's like wanting Kroos and settling for Gareth Barry.

36.) 17 Jun 2014
Sydney, I am all for signing top players like anyone is, but I do not want united throwing money at teams and players. You don't need the best players to win, that has been proved many times.

37.) 17 Jun 2014
Try to keep up? there's no confirmation anywhere to suggest that talks where ever going on

38.) 17 Jun 2014
Dave, there's no confirmation that we are in for Shaw but we know it's happening.

39.) 17 Jun 2014
Injury prone?, wasn't RVP almost every season when he was at arsenal, good signing if it happens

40.) 17 Jun 2014
There has never been confirmed reports of that Sydney, just rumours, mainly on twitter.

41.) 17 Jun 2014
There you go, reports MU will bid for £7m Vermaelen. That's more like it, not the £15m Fresh said. I would happily take Vermaelen for £7m.

Not sure about the other stories that Smalling will be a makeweight, considering Smalling is worth more than £7m it seems very strange.

Cleverley albeit been disappointing for the past 12 months is probably worth more than £7m giving his age and him being an homegrown English player.

Would be a good move for him though, he would flourish at Arsenal. Quick 1-2 passing is exactly what he likes and something we haven't embraced for years.

42.) 17 Jun 2014
Fresh, just like there have been no confirmed reports regarding Shaw, still happening though isn't it?

43.) 17 Jun 2014
Didn't Southampton confirm after the final game of the season that we had bid 27m for Shaw. Sounds like a big confirmation to me.
Can't see Hummels being interested with no European football at Utd, and Barcelona apparantly after him. Shame, would like him at OT

44.) 17 Jun 2014
Scully, Southampton, Shaw's agent and Manchester United have been tight lipped. Southampton did not confirm any offer. That's my point. No confirmation, but we all know it's happening.

45.) 17 Jun 2014
Seriously is TV any better than Evans who I rate as just as mediocre, if we buy TV we will only buy cheap 2nd players this window

Ed has done a brilliant snow job for the Glazers

46.) 17 Jun 2014
17 Jun 2014 15:02:32
Could be a good buy / might not - that is the point with all potential signings. Nobody really knows until they have signed and played for some time. Personally I feel he could turn out to be good for us as he is a more than capable CB who was raved about in his first few years at Arsenal before injuries curtailed his recent career. It's all about opinions in the end, unless of course your Sydney then there is only one, which is based on his insider knowledge of all things Utd.

47.) 17 Jun 2014
MD, for starters I am not saying TV would be a bad buy. I am saying we need to be buying the best if we are going to get back to where we need to be. Buying an Arsenal reject who hasn't been playing football for a while due to consistent injuries when being linked heavily to Hummels is a kick in the teeth. We do not need gambles, we need proven quality. TV is a gamble at best.

48.) 17 Jun 2014
Should we take lescott then as he is free?
Hummels is not coming, let's move on
